Omg I never start ongoing threads like this!
Back to school for my lot tomorrow. Taken pup for an evening walk tonight, desperately trying to tire him out! He's struggled to nap today as felt too hot.

Happy half birthday Billy! 🐶 🎂

GuyFawkesDay · 19/09/2021 11:54

Happy half birthday Billy! I am doing exactly the same thinks as @LadyCatStark with the squeezy cheese. Saying "heel" and feeding the cheese as he walks by my left leg. We got about maybe 50m doing it today. He's such a sucker for the cheese it makes it much easier because he only gets it for training so he's mad keen.

We got very wet on our morning walk today....

@GuyFawkesDay oh no you did get wet! We were lucky and the heavens opened just as we set off home in the car after our walk!

GuyFawkesDay · 19/09/2021 13:24

I went out in it as FawkesPup was being a bitey PITA about 9am. He goes on the morning school run most days so he's geared up for some exercise. Being a typical spaniel he couldn't care less about the wet! That said I think I'm going to need a waterproof for him and/or a drying coat. Better start looking for dog coats for winter.

He also needs new beds as he's HUGE compared with when we got him 7 weeks ago and is hanging off the sides of them all!!!

Spudlet · 19/09/2021 13:30

Get well soon @MsAwesomeDragon! Flowers

Happy half-birthday Billy! Cake

Lol at little bedraggled Fawkespup - that’ll learn him for being a nippy gitface Grin

Spudpup had an awesome time on his walk today - he met a lady Labrador who was fully grown and about the same height as him (ele-pup strikes again) and they had a lovely time wallowing around in a muddy puddle together… he then met a horse being ridden and frankly disgraced himself barking and growling at it Blush So socialisation around horses has moved up the priority list, fortunately this horse and rider were both fine with it but we don’t want to be sending people into orbit, ideally! 🐴

AwesomePup hasn't had a walk this morning, but he's being surprisingly calm about the change in routine. Dd2 had him running round the house, round and round through living room, dining room, kitchen and hallway. Dd1 played tug with him then blew bubbles in the garden. His lunch will be scatter fed in the garden, which keeps him busy for a while. Hopefully DH or dd1 will get a negative test so they can take him out tomorrow.

MsAwesomeDragon · 19/09/2021 13:35

@Spudlet I thought you'd posted a picture of AwesomePup there for a minute. He looks so much like my boy!!!

Happy half birthday Billy.

FawkesPup really does look sodden. Yet he looks completely happy and chilled about it.

opalescent · 19/09/2021 13:45

We had a lovely autumn walk with Opalpup today, at a local park. Then home for lunch, and even more excitingly- she is asleep in the kitchen, while I'm in the lounge! Unheard of!

TheBigMacDougal · 19/09/2021 16:57

4 days away for a wedding and we are home, Mac pup is home too. Seems like he enjoyed his time away but there were other dogs there to play with all the time, so think we’ll be back to square one on to saying hello to every dog he meets 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

We’re all exhausted so this week might be interesting!

TheBigMacDougal · 19/09/2021 17:02

Also, how have people progressed from naps with crate door shut, to door being open? He will do that for a little while after our morning walk and happily sleeps with it shut and cover over, but I’d like to build up to him taking himself in there.

He’s only 16 weeks and definitely has spaniel FOMO, but isn’t following me around the room quite as much…

GuyFawkesDay · 19/09/2021 17:24

We are only using crate at bedtime, downstairs he has a fleece in his pen, and beds in the study and the living room so he just parks his arse wherever he feels like it. Usually in study with DH during the day. He seems happy just to settle to nap but he still has follow me FOMO so no answers here I'm afraid!

Yup, I have a spaniel so needless to say, magnetic attraction to water comes as standard!!! Better sort drying coat etc!!

troppibambini6 · 19/09/2021 17:30

Hi please can I join you?
Bambini pup has been with us 8 days now and is settling in well but my goodness I'd forgotten how relentless puppies are!
Our old girl died in June aged 16 and was pretty sedate for the last few years so it's certainly been a change.
He's settled well in his crate and managing to get through the night without the toilet but is obviously into absolutely everything Grin
Here's the little villain.

Jinnybean · 19/09/2021 17:47

Can anyone recommend some good training treats. Jinny really isn’t bothered by the ones I’ve tried so is not taking to training very well :(

GuyFawkesDay · 19/09/2021 17:48

Oh hello BambiniPup!! What a cute!!

Well I've worked out why my borders look so tatty. FawkesPup has a route though and round them which he takes at approximately 267mph during zoomies, flattening everything in his path. It's like a furry high speed version of the T Rex in Jurassic Park 🙈

GuyFawkesDay · 19/09/2021 17:52

@Jinnybean ours loves:

Primula cheese. This is the hard stuff reserved for outside training!
The chicken and liver training treats I can get in Dobbies. They're great as they don't go mushy or crumble so great for out and about. They made by www.pet-munchies.com
At home I use kibble (not washing it these days though!!) or the grain free ones from pets at home.
I do make my own biscuits occasionally. Tin of sardines/mackerel in oil, 1 egg, 1 cup of rice flour whizzed up. He loves them but it is a faff!

LadyCatStark · 19/09/2021 17:56

@Jinnybean Billy adores fish so I ordered him some sample packs from Fish4Dogs of fish kibble. There was an offer on where you got 6 bags for just the cost of postage which was £2. I can’t see if they’re still doing that offer now but yesterday they sent us loads of fishy kibble and treats for free now that Billy is 6 months old so we’re using them for training again and once we’ve finished them I’ll buy him some more. That or Primula when we’re out and about.

MsAwesomeDragon · 19/09/2021 17:56

What a cutie bambini!! What breed is he?

Treats. We have lots of different varieties of waggs treats that I chop up really small (like 10 pieces per treat), or you can use chicken, cheese (a squeeze of Primula is a fabulous treat), salmon sticks from B&m. AwesomePup adores the fishy treats but they do stink so they are outdoor only.

ashmts · 19/09/2021 18:26

@Jinnybean what age is your pup? Mine wasn't interested in treats until she was maybe 12 weeks. She just didn't have the attention span to focus on anything. Even now she isn't interested in food outside, the only reward that works is her ball.

GuyFawkesDay · 19/09/2021 18:29

@ashmts mine is such a gannet 🙈
I purposely go slightly under on kibble as he gets chews and treats too otherwise he'd eat everything he could!

Spudlet · 19/09/2021 18:31

@GuyFawkesDay Spuddog had a Hotterdog fleece jumper for when he got wet (often. Actually, every time he got the chance). It was really good. I think Equafleece jumpers are pretty much identical, if you can’t find a Hotterdog?

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 19/09/2021 18:49

@LadyCatStark and @GuyFawkesDay...primula and walking. I've been giving kibble (low value treats but I'd reasoned I could keep dribbling it in) and reduced the rate because he has started jumping up and paying me or biting my fingers when I gave it. Any tips? I will try with primula

LadyCatStark · 19/09/2021 19:21

@MakeMeCleanTheHouse I literally just hold it by my side where I want him to walk as squeeze the tiniest bit at a time which he licks. It’s actually easier than managing a bag of treats! If it gets to the point that he’s had too much I have taught him “finished” and I put it away but he is usually keeps trying the loose lead walking and sometimes he wins and I give him a little bit more 😂.

GuyFawkesDay · 19/09/2021 19:53

Yep, I do exactly the same with the "heel" command, then when he's doing it and checking in cheese every few strides. I get maybe 25-50m of walk doing this on the way home.

I'm also using the tube to lure him to my left side to walk too.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 19/09/2021 19:53

Thanks

Our terrier destroys tennis balls. So I removed and put on top of pup's crate.

She worked out she could bump it until it fell off the front 😁

@MsAwesomeDragon get well soon! Glad to hear that even without the walks he is still getting a run-around the house

Happy half birthday to Billy. Love the photos of spud and fawkes pup on their autumn walks.

BambiniPup is so cute - what breed is the baby?

We took morning pup to a small city/town today for the first time (local high-street not included). He has been excellent with recall in the fields and the random beach I took him to. This meant I took his recall ability for granted and got a bit of a shock. At the city's local park let him off with my sisters dog and both decided coming back wasn't as fun as running around. Got him back of course (shouting chicken like a loon) but it did give me a reality check that just because he can do it so well in the field, doesn't mean to applies elsewhere. Living and learning!
