Omg I never start ongoing threads like this!
Back to school for my lot tomorrow. Taken pup for an evening walk tonight, desperately trying to tire him out! He's struggled to nap today as felt too hot.

Tizwoz - it's not so much a particular type for scent work more that it's different from the one for other things

tizwozliz · 11/09/2021 20:08

Ah I see, so a cue for the dog that they're doing something different?

Wolfcub · 11/09/2021 20:09

Tiz yes that's exactly it.

ilovesushi · 11/09/2021 20:32

@BaconAndAvocado our pup is 7 months and we feed her at 7am, 1.30pm and 8.30pm. We were really late in moving her from four to three meals maybe at about 5. months. I was wfh so it didn't really make any difference to me. I thought I would move her to two meals for Sept as she starts doggy daycare properly in a week, but the lady is happy to feed her so I'll stick with our current routine for now.

@LadyCatStark sounds like a fab outing! Are you doing gundog training? I'd like to but it is pricey.

cheeseisthebest · 11/09/2021 20:50

I just can't imagine dropping lunch, it seems like such a long gap between meals.
My pup might be jumpy, bitey, barky and nippy but no interest in his own poo. Yet!!!

@Spudlet took the whistle tonight called her name and come then as she ran to me I did 4 pips on whistle and she looked at me like what are you doing but as soon as she saw I had chicken she bounded over and sat at my feet and dropped her ball. After a few goes she soon got that the whistle was another signal for her to come!

TerrierOrTerror · 11/09/2021 20:56

We never dropped lunch - we tried at around 7 months old and she was a pest during the afternoons. Her lunch isn't huge, it's about 1/5 of her daily food allowance and usually in a Kong or similar.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 11/09/2021 21:06

No eating poo thank god! 🤮

Pup is 14 weeks. Until 12 weeks I slept on sofa and every time he woke I took him out. No puppy pads and never pee or poo in crate. But 4 weeks on the sofa.... 😴 I posted on here to say I was giving up because he was never going to sleep in his crate and I was still waking twice (occasionally more) to let him out. At that point I changed to three meals and started closing crate and opening and closing and opening until he was relaxed. Maybe coincidence that it worked but whatever I'm sooooo grateful.

Gundog training. What age should I think about it. We only plan to do it for training rather than for real

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 11/09/2021 21:10

Proud puppymum today....a stranger told me he was the best looking lab he'd seen this year. 😍 Let loose on the beach he played with other dogs but came back every single recall. Another owner commented and my daughter and boyfriend were impressed.

(He was tired so I know it was exhausted pup/luck but basked in the glory nonetheless)

cheeseisthebest · 11/09/2021 21:56

So to improve recall do I need a really good treat!?

That's lovely @MakeMeCleanTheHouse

FawkesPup has been fab today but it's all overshadowed by the fact DH has said he feels no emotion towards animals really.

I'm not sure he's the bloke I thought he was. And I'm sad and confused.

GuyFawkesDay · 11/09/2021 22:11

@cheeseisthebest I reserve the primula for outside training only. It help as he lurves it (see pic for "where's the cheese, woman??? pic)

Ooh puppy chat. I brought my Chihuahua home just over a week ago and I’m surprised at how well it is going (so far!) He doesn’t fit any of the harnesses I have tried so I’m waiting on yet another to arrive.

MightyMeerkat · 11/09/2021 22:18

@MakeMeCleanTheHouse That's lovely. I took pup for her first walk and she was so happy. I had so many lovely comments from people.

@GuyFawkesDay Sorry to hear what your DH said. That must be really difficult.

LadyCatStark · 11/09/2021 23:05

@ilovesushi not yet, this was his first experience but DH got a video of it and you can see by his tail that he just loved it! Here’s a screen shot of him bringing the dummy back to me, I wish o could share the video! I also think he’d love agility though because his favourite thing is to jump (and it’s really hard trying to convince him not go to protect his hips!). He wasn’t old enough to do the agility have a go course today though as they had to be a year old.

Aria20 · 12/09/2021 07:17

@LadyCatStark he's loving that. We might be going to a big dog show in Kent next weekend where they can try agility and canicross and flyball etc i might have to pretend she's older if they say there's an age restriction as she'll be desperate to try the agility!

@GuyFawkesDay my husband isn't an animal lover either unsurprisingly, someone at his works dog died and he was like "it's just a dog..." thankfully he didn't say that to the person though! The last couple of days though he has been better with our pup, I've seen him stroking her a few times and playing with her though so she's growing on him I think.

GuyFawkesDay · 12/09/2021 07:31

Mine strokes him, will look after him, he is nothing but kind to him but I don't think he "gets" animals as he never had one as a child, so didn't grow up with any attachment or understanding of pets but I do think he's growing on him. He definitely does like how happy the kids and I are with him here.

Dog has been fab, slept 10-6 then up for wee/poo and back to bed til 6:45. So close to this being a full night now, I don't want to get my hopes up though! He's nearly there with toileting, he just needs rewarding to go out and reminders and it happens.

The ignoring grabbing at clothes is really working for us. We've got the kids doing arms folded, stand up straight, saying leave firmly. Worked out what he really wants from this is to play tug, so we got toys and used those immediately....and he's started to bring us toys now instead, wanting to play.

MightyMeerkat · 12/09/2021 08:22

Wow the power of a walk - pup slept from 8pm - 11.30pm on the sofa and then from 12am - 6am in her pen!! No whining or wee breaks. I even managed to retreat from the kitchen to the sofa in the next room. She's had a short walk this morning and now she's zonked out again 🙂

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 12/09/2021 08:25

We are a big fail on leash walking. Because we have adult dog it's always distraction and trying to keep up. I need to go out alone

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 12/09/2021 08:26

Yes @MightyMeerkat

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 12/09/2021 08:27

I'm so pleased for you

Spudlet · 12/09/2021 08:42

@Aria20 Awesome work with the whistle!

@LadyCatStark Bless him, you must have been so proud of him and rightly so 😊

Here… I crumbled. He looks so comfortable…

MightyMeerkat · 12/09/2021 08:43

Thank you! I feel like a new woman. Amazing what some good sleep can do!

Sorry to hear about the lead walking fail. That's the next challenge for us!

opalescent · 12/09/2021 08:59

@MightyMeerkat so chuffed for you!! Did you sleep?

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 12/09/2021 09:11

I meant to say @LadyCatStark that picture is epic!
