Omg I never start ongoing threads like this!
Back to school for my lot tomorrow. Taken pup for an evening walk tonight, desperately trying to tire him out! He's struggled to nap today as felt too hot.

Just to confuse matters, Ada's sleeping also improved when we dropped from 4 meals to 3 meals a day, but we moved her last meal slightly later. I'm inclined to think it was probably her age as much as anything else.

@BaconAndAvocado - your pup is still very little, what's suitable for an older dog isn't necessarily going to be helpful for a 9 week old pup

MightyMeerkat · 11/09/2021 14:27

I agree that an early dinner is best. If pup doesn't poop before bed time, it's guaranteed that there will be a 4am wake up! I think our problem is that pup drinks a lot in the evening so still needs to wee during the night despite going to the toilet before bed. I don't like the idea of restricting her access to water though.

BaconAndAvocado · 11/09/2021 14:38

tizwozliz oh I didn't think of that!
How old is MakeMe's pup?

BaconAndAvocado · 11/09/2021 14:39

Newboy is currently having his last meal 7:30.

MrsHerculePoirot · 11/09/2021 14:39

@Equimum at that age you’d need to be sleeping right next to pup so you’ll know when they need to go out if you don’t want them to toilet inside overnight.

tizwozliz · 11/09/2021 14:57

@BaconAndAvocado I think makeme's pup is at least 12 weeks if not older, and at this sort of age even a few weeks makes quite a difference

BaconAndAvocado · 11/09/2021 15:15

Thanks.
Newboy is 10 weeks today!

He's just done something really gross, he ate his own poo! A runny one too. By the time I got to him in the garden it had only been a tiny bit but..........🤢🤢🤢

Googled it and apparently it's not uncommon 😳

Yucky, but common I think. My puppy hasn’t eaten her own poo but has eaten her own vomit on more than one occasion 🤢
Aria20 · 11/09/2021 15:41

Yuk. Mine also ate her own sick once.... Confused to be fair it looked at smelt exactly the same as when she ate it the first time so prob didn't taste any different to her!

Equimum · 11/09/2021 16:01

Thanks MrsHerculePoirot. We had intended to sleep downstairs with her for longer, but as she was settling after he last wee and happy in her open crate (which is inside a closed pen), we started going upstairs around midnight and then coming down as soon as she cried. To be honest. We weren't my always hearing her actually go when we next to her - she doesn't my really make any sound on our floors. I think we are going to try to set an alarm tonight and come down around 4am to take her out, and see how that goes. I'm reluctant to go back to sleeping with her unless we really need to, as she's sleeping well and settling. We are, obviously, with her virtually all the time apart for for those few hours overnight.

Can I ask what sort of schedule people with similarly aged pups are in. Bella is 9 weeks and is fed at 7.30/2.30&9.30 as per her breeders plan. She's up and active first thing, and we tend to do a little 'training' around 9am, when she seems really alert. She then sleeps on and off for several hours, interspersed with short plays and lots of cuddles. After school, she has a crazy time with my kids and tends to follow us round, then varies between snoozing and being hyper in the evening.

We had a day when she ate her own poo, but I checked with the breeder and she said it was absolutely fine.

GuyFawkesDay · 11/09/2021 16:39

FawkesPup is fed 7am, 1pm (smaller meal, as he was leaving a bit but he has Kong etc during the day too, then dinner at 5:30/6pm. This allowed me to walk him after work or once his dinner has settled (or both) without fear of giving him belly trouble

cheeseisthebest · 11/09/2021 16:54

My pup wakes about 7 ish, has breakfast about 7 30, lunch about 12.30 and tea at 6 ish. Walks are all still a bit random at the moment. He sleeps in the lounge with us from about 8 ish then goes in crate after last wee at 10 ish.
He's 15 weeks.

We had the best day at the Game and Country Festival! Billy loved watching the horses best and meeting other dogs. He entered a dog show and won a first and 2 thirds! He had a go at a gundog scurry and he was such a natural and he really seemed to enjoy it so we bought him his first gundog dummy. He’s exhausted now. DS also managed to shoot a clay pigeon on his first ever shot of a gun (and missed the rest 😂).

Aria20 · 11/09/2021 17:44

@LadyCatStark that sounds a lovely day! He'll be really tired after seeing everything too.

567and · 11/09/2021 17:47

We’re still on 4 meals a day but he’s ravenous when he wakes up, so meal times at the minute are 6:30, 10:30, 14:00 and 18:00. Hoping to move the middle two closer together and then down to 3 meals in the next month. Also hoping he’ll start waking a bit later!!

This all sounds so civilised!! I can't wait to get there 🤞🏻
BaconAndAvocado · 11/09/2021 18:26

At what did age did people reduce meals from 4 to 3?

567and · 11/09/2021 18:37

I was told roughly around 4 month but I suppose it depends on the dog. Mine is starving by the time his second meal comes along so he wouldn’t make it much longer than 11am at the minute from his breakfast. He’s 11 weeks at the minute though so still quite young.

tizwozliz · 11/09/2021 19:12

We dropped from 4 to 3 meals a couple of weeks ago I think, so 14/15 weeks.

Originally we were doing 6am, 11:30am, 3:30pm, 7:30pm

Now we're doing 6:30am, 12:30/1pm, 8pm

@LadyCatStark sounds like a great day out

First class on new course went reasonably well. It's a really nice set up, outdoors in an enclosed field, with a few distractions around so a good environment to build on what we've taught already. Ended with an off lead runaround which Ada loved, she slept most of the afternoon.

Wolfcub · 11/09/2021 19:15

Has anyone got a woofles harness? We need a different style harness for scent work and have just ordered one

BaconAndAvocado · 11/09/2021 19:21

tizwozliz your original meal plan is exactly the same as ours.
It's strange, it feels like Newboy has been here for ages but it's only been a week!

Glad your first class went well.

Spudlet · 11/09/2021 19:34

@LadyCatStark That sounds like a lovely day!

Spud pup has been a really mixed bag the last few days - he’s like the little girl with the curl, either very very good or horrid. There appears to be no middle ground 😳 Mostly he falls to the former end of the spectrum, but when he plays up it is fairly spectacular!

Wolfcub · 11/09/2021 19:46

Spud that sounds like Wolfpup. He just runs out of good in a spectacular way

tizwozliz · 11/09/2021 19:50

I'm intrigued by the fact you need a particular harness for scentwork...

opalescent · 11/09/2021 19:54

@BaconAndAvocado opalpup eats every single 💩 unless we forcibly restrain her. I wish I was kidding
