Hang in there those with pups too little to go out, it gets better when you can go on adventures. We've been for a paddle today.

@tizwozliz so gorgeous! I'm really looking forward to taking pup out for a walk! (Although probably won't be come the wet and windy winter!)

GuyFawkesDay · 26/08/2021 17:18

I can't wait to go out either!! Only a few days to go now for pavement walks.

FawkesPup has been really very charming to lots of visitors this week and it feels like he's really growing up already!

Elmrosie · 26/08/2021 17:33

Thanks @567and, I'll try that.

I've booked Elmpup on an Introduction to Scent Training course. I think she'll enjoy it after her sniffing exploits at the dog field yesterday.

GuyFawkesDay · 26/08/2021 17:34

Oh that sounds loads of fun!

Booked FawkesPup in for his first puppy groom today.

567and · 26/08/2021 17:37

Have you all done much visiting other (vaccinated) dogs? I realise out pup is still very young, but I have a friend who I could have come round with her dog to start socialising. He was very scard of the other dogs at the vet the other day so may be some easy introductions to older dogs would be a good start.

TerrierOrTerror · 26/08/2021 17:43

Finding our pup (who turns a year next week) tough these last weeks. We hit the teenage stage late at about 10.5 months and I feel like I have the puppy blues all over again.

We've even had two accidents today which we've not had in MONTHS (apparently she had one at daycare last week). In all fairness for both she asked to go out but went before we got there so I think she either has a slight infection or is just waiting until the last minute to ask - just waiting on the vet to see if they will accept a sample without an appointment.

cheeseisthebest · 26/08/2021 18:17

Mine has met loads of dogs but he was fully vaccinated when we got him. How old is yours 567and?

Returnoftheowl · 26/08/2021 18:35

Puppy had his first puppy class last night. He was very well behaved... But today I've been trying to do the stuff with him (mainly loose lead walking) and frankly it's been a disaster!
He seems to have found his voice recently... He barked and barked at the poor neighbour. The neighbour did give him a cuddle which quietened him down, but he's just got very barky recently.

I've booked him in for puppy swimming tomorrow. Hopefully that will puff him out!

567and · 26/08/2021 18:39

@allcheeseisthebest hes only 9 weeks, so very young still. I keep reading that they need to start socialising before 12 weeks which many dogs are still waiting for vaccines to take effect. He's got his second vaccines in 2 weeks so not too long to wait. May be I'm being a bit too eager!

567and · 26/08/2021 18:40

@allReturnoftheowl puppy swimming sounds amazing!

tizwozliz · 26/08/2021 18:48

We had one dog to visit in the 2 and a bit weeks between puppy arrival and second vaccinations. Most people I know locally have elderly dogs who wouldn't have appreciated meeting a bouncy puppy.

Socialisation doesn't mean meeting other dogs necessarily, just experiencing lots of sights and sounds, meeting different people etc.

cheeseisthebest · 26/08/2021 19:10

He can meet vaccinated dogs. And yes you can do all the other stuff too.
Mine has found his voice too, I'm not a fan.

Returnoftheowl · 26/08/2021 19:31

Hopefully it will tire him out and calm him down... He's a horror in the evenings

Spudlet · 26/08/2021 19:44

@567and They go through fear stages as part of their normal development - about 8 or 9 weeks is right on time, so I wouldn’t worry too much if your pup seems a bit scared of new things at this age. Just let them take things slowly and meet new things at their own pace and from a distance they feel comfortable with. They soon come through it and get confident again.

Spudpup has been for two little walks today, for the first time in ages! He is pooped GrinWe have been doing lots of training on handing things over when requested… so far so good. He is currently just in the last throes of naughtiness before he settles for the night. He peed in his pyjamas so he’s currently a naked puppy! Which is novel.

cheeseisthebest · 26/08/2021 19:47

How do you do the handing things over training? Or drop it training? Every morning morning he hangs into my pyjama bottoms!

cheeseisthebest · 26/08/2021 19:47

Onto

GuyFawkesDay · 26/08/2021 19:53

Yeah I have the same issue which I solve with bitter apple spray below the knees but I need to teach leave it better!!

ilovesushi · 26/08/2021 20:04

Need to catch up with this rapidly expanding thread. Our gorgeous pup (lab/ golden retriever X) is nearing 7 months. Had a fab day out today including a trip on a ferry, long walk, lots of encounters with other dogs, joggers and cyclists, plus a pub lunch and she was brilliant. Only thing was she didn't wee or poo all day! She held it till we got home. If anyone has any ideas of breaking her habit of only going in the garden, I need to know!

Wolfcub · 26/08/2021 20:24

Happy International dog day fellow puppy parents

MeredithMae · 26/08/2021 20:48

Love the sound of puppy swimming! Poodles are meant to be water dogs but both mine seem to dislike it.

LadyCatStark · 26/08/2021 21:30

I was meant to clean the house this afternoon but it was too nice so we went to the beach instead. It ended up taking me 2 hours to restore the dog, child, car and house to its original state from before we went 😂.

GuyFawkesDay · 26/08/2021 21:33

Yeah but life's too short to spend it cleaning, and beach days are there to be enjoyed!

Bought FawkesPup some beef twist things from JR products. He's 12 weeks bar 2 days and oh my word, he loved it!!! Definitely recommend

MorningInspiration · 26/08/2021 21:35

Oh yes Happy International Dog Day! Albeit doggy years still seem a way off with a wrong pup

Morningpup found his voice.... and has never lost it since. Particularly when we eat which I am trying to find the solution too! Any advice greatly appreciated. Meal times feel like live concerts or riots

@ilovesushi Ours just one day got desperate but I can tell initially he wasn't keen (he whined and looked sad hah). I'm impressed with sushipups bladder! Maybe when he next shows signs inside take him for a walk instead and wait him out. Then you at least know he's desperate.

@Cheeseisthebest I found tuggy is a great way to teach leave. When they have the tuggy toy wave a treat in front of their face and say leave - when they release say your marker word (e.g. yes or good) then keep repeating until the time it takes to let go gets quicker. Then you should be able to practise it with other items. With leave I would always treat it to show if they leave things they get good things. If its an emergency and you don't have something, leave it and once done go grab a treat whilst praising. If isnt really food motivated just swap for a dif toy. Also over time top and tail the command by teaching both "take" and "leave".
We are pretty good on leave but there will still be occasions we have to open his mouth to get out a snail - yuck

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 26/08/2021 21:36

@tizwozliz that photo cheered me up. I look forward to long walks and rivers.

My DD is sleeping on the sofa tonight as I'm so exhausted I can't function. Pup has been a lively horror most of the day and older dog feels a bit like me about it. This -> Shock
