Hi everyone. I posted a few times on the previous thread but haven't been around for a while as I've had a bit of a week (daughter in hospital with pericarditis, probably caused by a tick bite). She's out now and doing much better.

Here's a picture of my pup to go with all the other beauties on the thread! So nice to see who everyone is talking about!

Ilovesushi

Hairy pup is also toilet shy and so far only goes at hone (mostly) in the garden now. We haven't due to Covid ( we gave all been plagued) been away from home for any length of time yet but it is a worry!

hilseey · 26/08/2021 21:59

It's a very exciting day for us tomorrow as it's First Walk Day. I actually have no idea how to go about getting a 12 week old puppy to walk in a particular direction (of my choosing) so am off to google and would welcome any tips you have!

LadyCatStark · 26/08/2021 22:56

@hilseey at first we didn’t, we just went out on the street and let Billy take us the way he wanted to go! It was mainly sniffing at first.

tizwozliz · 27/08/2021 07:50

I'm not sure we made any progress in a particular direction on our first trip out. We just let her wander and sniff at what she wanted. We probably covered about 200m in total.

ilovesushi · 27/08/2021 08:15

I think sushipup has a bladder of steel. We were out from 9am to 6.30pm and she held it. As soon as we got home she weed on the front lawn for the longest time! My dad's dog also a lab was the same and I always laughed about it and smugly thought we won't fall into that trap. I think we trained her to go in the garden so well that by the time we went out for walks, it was so embedded and the initial walks so short that she's never learned to go elsewhere. If she does go I will shower her with praise and treats.

cheeseisthebest · 27/08/2021 08:43

My pup would only poo at home last week but this week has done 2 poos whilst out. He goes so many times a day!
We have a lot of play biting and nipping, he just wants to play and doesn't understand. I've tried saying no and rewarding with a treat, tried distraction but he carries on. Bless him, he needs his doggy mate to play with.

cheeseisthebest · 27/08/2021 08:44

Gorgeous pup Hilsey, glad your daughter is better.

cheeseisthebest · 27/08/2021 08:44

Thank you for the leave advice. Think I need to get nicer treats to help!

GuyFawkesDay · 27/08/2021 09:06

I'm wandering round the house with a pouch of treats (Wainwright semi moist, on offer in pets at home)

He's hanging off my dressing gown. I'm trying to treat when I say leave and eventually he does....but it's very hit and miss and I reckon he will hang off it to get the treats. Had a nice game of "find it" with a few scattered in the lawn earlier.

He's now crashed in his cardboard box bed after s 5:30am start.

cheeseisthebest · 27/08/2021 09:47

I had a handful of kibble yesterday to try and stop him nipping but he could just smell it and went crazy!
We had a 4.30 start but he did eventually go back to sleep about 5 15.

GuyFawkesDay · 27/08/2021 10:02

Yep, I can't put things in normal pockets. He's also learned what the treat pouch looks like so now when I take him to go to the loo he does his very best sit, then eye contact, then tries a paw rather than go for a wee 🤦‍♀️

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 27/08/2021 10:44

This thread is great. Just when you feel like you are the only person struggling with something (and blaming yourself) I come in and here it all is...making me feel normal.

4 days ago he was happy with harness, walking on loose leash, sit, down, stay and looking to me. Clicker training going well.

Today:
Fighting with harness
Lying on his back chewing the lead or pulling backwards swinging off the end of it
Biting. Biting. Biting
Bothering older dog to the point of harassment
Chewing everything that passes within 15cm of his mouth

All with goofy happy grin. All my attempts at training are foiled because I'm juggling work, life, family and he is either snatching at treats or not interested.

It's just a stage..... too early for Wine ???

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 27/08/2021 10:45

Chewing...before I resort to string to tie his jaws shut can anyone suggest anything?

GuyFawkesDay · 27/08/2021 10:54

God I wish I could. The puppy has whimzees, lamb braids and beef twists. A yak stick. Enough toys for pets at home. What does he chew? The cardboard box from Amazon which has become an impromptu bed. Or shoes/slippers. Or his nice new toy box. I have sacrificed my slippers as they're old anyway but I totally get it.

And we've gone backwards on toilet training. Going to have to crack out the chicken for a reward for going outside as he's just weeing everywhere again. I've cleaned with enzyme cleaner and then not water flash mopped daily but he's just going all over the place. Back to 30 minute loo trips.

MightyMeerkat · 27/08/2021 10:55

@MakeMeCleanTheHouse If you haven't tried it, I'd definitely recommend the bitter apple spray. Pup was chewing shoes, radiator valve, chair leg but a quick spray and she's leaving them alone.

It's been a busy week so I've not really had chance to read the thread. So much going on that I can't remember who said what but I hope all is well with you and your pups.

We had a trip to the vet yesterday for a potential ear infection. The vet just said "spaniel ears"! I have some drops for her but administering them is like wrestling a greased pig!

I'm finding WFH is really hard at the moment. Pup wants constant attention it feels like. I'm sure I'm giving her too many treats to distract her. I did have a delivery from Dragonfly yesterday. Highly recommended. The yak stick is not popular but the lambs ears are 🤢

calmplease · 27/08/2021 10:58

Hi all,
Cute pics of the new pups! My one seems to have a bit of a snotty eye (sorry can't think of how to explain it) which looks a bit gammy and sore. He's also a bit sneezy. Fine within himself though. All vaccinated. Anything to worry about do you think? At the moment I'm just cleaning it.
Thanks :)

MightyMeerkat · 27/08/2021 11:00

@GuyFawkesDay It must be a spaniel thing. We've taken a step back with toilet training this week. She won't go outside. And she can definitely hold it longer now and waits to pee inside! And the enzyme spray makes no difference because she's going everywhere.

tizwozliz · 27/08/2021 12:06

I really need to find some local friends to have doggy play dates with. We met a lovely 1 year old cocker spaniel at the dog café today so Ada got to have some proper play time. Would love to be able to schedule it as a once a week thing. Although it did remind me why I didn't get a spaniel after last week thinking they'd be a much more manageable size - dipping ears in the water bowl followed by rolling around in the dust/dirt!

On the toilet away from home thing, Ada is fine with wee's but hadn't done anything else away from the garden. She did eventually go when camping last weekend but was a good 14 hours before she decided to, hoping that might have persuaded her that she can go on walks if she needs to.

I was all ready to buy bitter apple spray and then I read that a review that said it encouraged rather than deterred their lab so not so sure. She's not terrible, but I have a couple of chairs I'd prefer she not destroy. They're actually going to be reupholsted so it's not a problem from a damage point of view but don't want to get her in the habit of chewing furniture.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 27/08/2021 12:13

I have a spray which is bitter but will look for the apple one. This is so watery it runs off.

Unimpressed at the idea of going backwards with housetraining [shocked]

Spudlet · 27/08/2021 13:01

Our old lab loved the taste of the bitter apple stuff… haven’t tried it with Spudpup yet. Wondering if I could just do the whole garden, can you get it by the vat-full? Grin

We have had a nice morning. DS wanted to go to the BMX track in a local town, and as we can’t put the bike rack onto the big car this meant we all had to get into the Micra. So I sat on the backseat next to Spudpup, who thought this was just excellent, while DS got to ride in the front. The journey there was a bit fraught as Spudpup alternated between chewing the seatbelt and chewing me Hmm However, he did settle eventually and then got to explore around the big field while DS and DH went around the track up at the far end. Then he fell asleep on my arm on the way home. Now he’s had his lunch and is asleep again.

We’re off out again later so he’s going to be one sleepy puppy - and he’s also a naked one as the cone and vest are officially off! His scar on his tummy looks great, really well healed. So we’re just going to wait until Monday to be extra safe, then we’re all going down to the river to take him for a paddle. I think he’s going to enjoy it Smile

GuyFawkesDay · 27/08/2021 13:44

I may yet buy spaniel snoods for containing the ears!!

I'm using ear cleaner to get him used to it. It's about as popular as a fart in a lift.

Aww he looks so cute!
GuyFawkesDay · 27/08/2021 14:03

He wasn't so cute at 3am when I took him out for a wee, he came in and I nipped to the loo....during which the he did a big stinky 💩 on the floor. He'd been back in maximum 2 minutes 🙄
