New border collie pup worries

mumnosbest · 21/02/2021 21:36

We've had our pup just 4 days and I'm already just like a new mum, worrying about her. We searched for ages but prices have sky-rocketed so ended up going with a local man not a registered breeder. I'm now worried about how little I actually know about where she has come from.

She's 9 weeks old but seems so tiny. My kitchen scales say she's just under 3oz (not sure if they're very accurate). I have her vets card. She's had both sets of jabs and been wormed and flead according to her card. The first 2 days she was fine, very sleepy but playful in between. Yesterday she had very loose poos and brought up bile but I put it down to her pinching the cat's food (I've moved it now) and eating grass. Today she had diarrhea again and been sick. She has slept most of the day. She has been awake for short intervals but has mostly just wanted to cuddle rather than play. She has barely eaten since she arrived but is drinking and weeing plenty.

I am calling the vets first thing to get her checked over. Does this all sound normal and just stress related? Or should I be really worried?
Thanks!

BippityBoppityBop · 26/02/2021 02:22

I'm so sorry to hear your update.

Lots of respect to you for coming back and updating people too.

I hope he pulls through Thanks

Savoury · 26/02/2021 07:14

Oh no! You've done everything for this puppy and can be proud of that. Stay strong.

AngelDelightUK · 26/02/2021 07:37

Feeling so sad for you, I’m a massive dog lover and know how quickly you just fall in love with your new pup

It might be worth talking to Trevor Cooper at doglaw.co.uk/ to see if there’s anything you can do regarding the breeder

TedMullins · 26/02/2021 07:45

Poor Oreo. You’ve done everything you could. The breeder is an absolute charlatan, i hope something can be done

moosemama · 26/02/2021 08:34

I am so sorry to read your latest update. She is a lucky girl to have you and you have done your very best by her. Flowers

@Veterinari

Nope he wasn't struck off - his sentence was increased on appeal as the original was unduly lenient:

www.vettimes.co.uk/news/vet-jailed-for-3-5-years-at-court-of-appeal/

And I can't find later articles but I know he's back working as a vet - appalling....

LizB62A · 26/02/2021 08:43

OP - very sorry to hear about your poor puppy

Sadly this happens a lot with unscrupulous "breeders"

catwithflowers · 26/02/2021 08:54

mumnosbest So, so sorry to hear this. You and your family must be heartbroken. I think you are making the right decision not to let Oreo suffer any more, poor love. Best of luck with bringing the unscrupulous breeder to account. ☹️

catwithflowers · 26/02/2021 08:58

@YouHadMeAtWoof

This is so very sad. Thank you for taking the flack and not running away from admitting that this is a disaster. It serves as a very important lesson to people. I imagine you still paid over £1000 for her looking at current rates, plus all the vets fees you must be very out of pocket. It’s really sad you have to go through this with your children. I feel for you. Even if one person reads your story and thinks twice about giving crazy amounts of money to someone that clearly has no thought or care for life, the. You’ve done a good thing posting here and sticking with it.
Absolutely agree with this post.
sunflowersandbuttercups · 26/02/2021 09:25

Poor Oreo Thanks

@mumnosbest I have just read the thread and I’m so sorry to hear Oreo is so poorly. I’m usually just a lurker on doghouse but wanted to echo previous posters who have appreciated you taking the advice on the chin, reporting the breeder and taking time to update this thread when you obviously have a lot going on Flowers

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 26/02/2021 11:29

So so sorry to read your update mumnosbest 💐

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 26/02/2021 14:20

So sorry OP. I'm sure she has lots of love and cuddles from you.

Don't feel like you need to come back and update unless you want some support.

Flowers for Oreo

Teenytinymum · 26/02/2021 16:30

Hope she turned a corner, gorgeous little dog x

TheChip · 26/02/2021 17:31

I hope you are doing okay today @mumnosbest Flowers

Ellmau · 26/02/2021 18:01

So sorry, OP :(

icegarden · 26/02/2021 23:54

Am I right in understanding that the same vet is involved? I can't believe he wasn't Ste

icegarden · 26/02/2021 23:56

I can't believe he wasn't struck off. But a repeat offence of any criminal offence is very serious. And it must have been bad to get a custodial sentance

icegarden · 27/02/2021 00:11

OP I think this is also a classic case which shows how easy it is to be duped. Tragic for the puppy. Very expensive for you. Awful for the kids but maybe a positive way for them to learn which you can share with others? I'd never judge as I adopted a dog and thought I'd done loads of homework, had dogs before and still went on a big learning curve

viques · 27/02/2021 00:26

@LizB62A

Please try and find out which vet allegedly gave it the jabs We had a local vet who was getting paid by puppy farmers to fake vaccination cards.....
Was that Daniel the greyhound specialist? Got sent to prison for his greed thank goodness.
WannabemoreWeaver · 27/02/2021 00:49

That vaccination record is not right. Do you know the vet it is supposed to be from? I may call them if I were you to check. Something weird is going on here. You need to get to the vet asap.

AlternativePerspective · 27/02/2021 02:40

@ WannabemoreWeaver read the thread ffs!!!

mumnosbest · 28/02/2021 11:28

Thanks for all your advice and support. Oreo made it through the night and as the worms were treated was actually at her best for a while, even wagging her tail. Unfortunately her glucose levels were still getting lower and her bloods were very poor. We decided to pts while she was feeling well and comfortable, rather than letting her deteriorate. It was hard as she seemed to be getting better in herself but we were reassured that this was just due to her holding food in and that we could expect seizures and loss of control of limbs soon. She left us in my arms, comfortable and loved. I'm happy in knowing we did our best for her and am in touch with a lovely lady from the council who is helping us to hopefully help her mum and siblings. The 'breeder' has offered a full refund (not holding my breath) or a replacement pup! Angry I won't rest yet, knowing he still has dogs.
