New border collie pup worries

mumnosbest · 21/02/2021 21:36

We've had our pup just 4 days and I'm already just like a new mum, worrying about her. We searched for ages but prices have sky-rocketed so ended up going with a local man not a registered breeder. I'm now worried about how little I actually know about where she has come from.

She's 9 weeks old but seems so tiny. My kitchen scales say she's just under 3oz (not sure if they're very accurate). I have her vets card. She's had both sets of jabs and been wormed and flead according to her card. The first 2 days she was fine, very sleepy but playful in between. Yesterday she had very loose poos and brought up bile but I put it down to her pinching the cat's food (I've moved it now) and eating grass. Today she had diarrhea again and been sick. She has slept most of the day. She has been awake for short intervals but has mostly just wanted to cuddle rather than play. She has barely eaten since she arrived but is drinking and weeing plenty.

I am calling the vets first thing to get her checked over. Does this all sound normal and just stress related? Or should I be really worried?
Thanks!

I really hope you get some good news soon @mumnosbest Sad

mumnosbest · 24/02/2021 14:56

I've checked and the worm meds were panacur suspension, the main active ingredient being fenbendazole. It doesn't appear to contain ivermectin, although panacur plus does.

Probably not that then.
I hope she goes on to make a full recovery, poor little pup.

Frazzled2207 · 24/02/2021 15:11

sorry to hear. Very much hope she recovers.

mumnosbest · 24/02/2021 15:42

I've spent most of the afternoon reporting the seller to various authorities too, although I get the impression that most really weren't too bothered. The council will look into licensing. The RSPCA said as it's not an emergency (although I argued he may have other very poorly pups) they'll get back to me in 10 days for more info. The police said no crimes were commited so they can't do anything. Lucy's law, forged docs and fraudulent advertisement aren't crimes? 😡

Do you have a local fb page? I would just put a warning out there to people who are considering buying a puppy from a breeder who is not recommended to proceed with caution as sometimes pups may not be healthy if they have come Fromm a questionable background.

I wouldn’t go so far as to name the culprit because that sadly could be considered to be defamation at this point. But just a warning might at least make some people think twice, because this bloke won’t be the only one.

Figgygal · 24/02/2021 16:13

Have you been back in touch with the breeder at all? What have they said?

Is she suffering?
We’ve just rehomed an older dog and spent £600 in around 8 weeks due to health issues hadn’t had a chance to insure him but you need to prepare for unexpected costs when have animals

GingerFigs · 24/02/2021 16:47

@mumnosbest I read your post with interest but didn't comment as felt others had said everything. I actually wanted to give you a hug and say well done for coming back and putting your hands up and saying yep this is what happened and for doing the best you can going forward. Well done for reporting and trying to get authorities interested.

Hope your pup recovers soon x

moosemama · 24/02/2021 17:45

Just read your update. So sorry to hear she’s gone downhill. I really hope she’s ok. This must be devastating for your family. Flowers

I wasn’t sure if someone had already posted the link to CARIAD’s how, what and where to report page but here it is anyway, just in case. I’ve heard others who have been in a similar position got the best response/help from Trading Standards. Which isn’t where most people would instantly think of reporting.

LostArcher · 24/02/2021 18:05

My collie was given Panacur. It is fine for MDR1 variation. You can get your collie genetically tested - costs £48.

4Mongrels · 24/02/2021 18:17

Really hope she’s better soon, poor pup.

How frustrating OP. It absolutely is illegal. (Assuming you're in England)

Have you rung trading standards?

Well done on trying - keep at it if you can.
How is pup doing? Hope you're ok
🤞

MrsBDarcy · 24/02/2021 23:04

Oh poor you and poor puppy. I hope all is well or she's getting better
I worried endlessly about our pup - no visits allowed when we got him but lots of pics of them and with her teenagers in her house but ultimately taken on trust. It worked out but I was very naive
We got a lttter from vet to say pup was from the mum so as much as we could find out...we were lucky so I hope this serves as a warning to others
I so hope she gets better

LizB62A · 24/02/2021 23:14

Hope he was prosecuted.

He was, but his deluded local fan club still think "he's such a good vet, he was so good when little Fluffy got a bone stuck in his throat".
He's a poor excuse for a human being who profited from animal suffering.

smellyolddog · 24/02/2021 23:15

@GingerFigs I second that, how lovely to hear all sides of a story and I'm really praying the pup will be ok, it's so stressful when they are tiny babies.

RandomMess · 24/02/2021 23:21

This is heartbreaking and angering in equal measures.

The law is pathetic!!

mumnosbest · 25/02/2021 07:54

gingerfigs that's lovely thank you and I whole-heartedly accept your hug. That and a good sleep are at the top of my list of needs ☺️
thanks for all the other great advice and support here too. Trading standards have definitely been the most helpful to me too.
Oreo is not really any different today so we're off for another day on fluids. I'm hoping she'll improve over the next 2-3 days as we really are reaching out limit now and looking into credit options! Just need a little glimmer of hope and change now so fingers crossed

If that's the case I'm thinking if I believe he was struck off and is now unable to practice? I hope so.

Take care of yourself OP and whatever the outcome, know that you've done your best for her I'm glad TS have been useful - in my experience they're often the most helpful too

Fingers crossed 🤞

It sure many people know realise that the RSPCA are a prosecuting authority, meaning they have the power to arrest and charge people with animal offences. This will be why the police are less interested as it really sits with the RSPCA.

It doesn't explain why the RSPCA haven't shown more interest in this case.

Wishing wee Oreo well.

BigWolfLittleWolf · 25/02/2021 16:56

They absolutely do NOT have that power.
They have to call the police to assist when they want to arrest.

It doesn't explain why the RSPCA haven't shown more interest in this case
Because they are useless?
I have had dealings with the RSPCA years ago re puppy farming and they were not at all helpful.
They are the first port of call in abuse cases but most people no longer think of them terribly favourably.

Yeah your information is incorrect. The SSPCA have those powers the RSPCA do not
mumnosbest · 25/02/2021 21:55

Oreo is at home, comfortable but very poorly. She has a liver condition and can't maintain her glucose levels and it's unlikely it can be treated. If she makes it through the night, we have made the decision not to put her through any more.
