New border collie pup worries

mumnosbest · 21/02/2021 21:36

We've had our pup just 4 days and I'm already just like a new mum, worrying about her. We searched for ages but prices have sky-rocketed so ended up going with a local man not a registered breeder. I'm now worried about how little I actually know about where she has come from.

She's 9 weeks old but seems so tiny. My kitchen scales say she's just under 3oz (not sure if they're very accurate). I have her vets card. She's had both sets of jabs and been wormed and flead according to her card. The first 2 days she was fine, very sleepy but playful in between. Yesterday she had very loose poos and brought up bile but I put it down to her pinching the cat's food (I've moved it now) and eating grass. Today she had diarrhea again and been sick. She has slept most of the day. She has been awake for short intervals but has mostly just wanted to cuddle rather than play. She has barely eaten since she arrived but is drinking and weeing plenty.

I am calling the vets first thing to get her checked over. Does this all sound normal and just stress related? Or should I be really worried?
Thanks!

@ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn

I've just had a proper look at that vacc card - I think it's it's def faked.

And the sticker for the first vaccination is stuck over the top of the second.

Good spot!
LizB62A · 23/02/2021 19:22

Please try and find out which vet allegedly gave it the jabs
We had a local vet who was getting paid by puppy farmers to fake vaccination cards.....

FurrySlipperBoots · 23/02/2021 19:24

Christ this is a depressing thread. Not blaming you OP, we bought a farm collie at 6 weeks from an accidental litter, no socialisation at all as he'd just been kept in a stable, and riddled with lice. This was 20 years ago but I still feel the guilt. You do live and learn!

What will you do about insurance? You'll want a good one, I recommend PetPlan, as she's likely to have ongoing issues that could be cripplingly expensive otherwise.

Very best of luck with her, I do hope it all works out.

Unbelievable. Why study for all those years to put animals at potential risk? Hope he was prosecuted.
oakleaffy · 23/02/2021 19:28

Edit assumed fraudulent vet would be a male..

Derbee · 23/02/2021 22:04

I know you said you would report the breeder, but you must report the vet as well. When we picked up our puppy, the breeder scanned his chip whilst we were there, to ensure that he was the right one with his paperwork (9 puppies were being collected).

His worming certificate was signed by the breeders vet, as was his vaccination card, so we could see who the vet was. When we took him to our vet for his second vaccination, she scanned him before giving his second vaccination.

So to get a sick puppy who has had worms for ages, faked vaccination records and fake microchip number, there is a dodgy vet involved in the process too.

It's so sad. I met a lovely young owner recently who had ended up getting a dog from a puppy farm. Puppy clearly had serious issues. She is very open about how the 'breeder' can conned her. Please do try and report it all

oakleaffy · 24/02/2021 00:17

Worth watching if you want a cute little Lockdown puppy.

LST · 24/02/2021 07:21

@mumnosbest

Thanks for the warning LST my one and only phobia is worms so this has been tough on so many levels. Thankfully I have a very brave 9yr old DD. How is your pup now. Did she/he recover well? Thanks!
Yes! He will be 9 in July. He's ace. He did have a dicky tummy for a while the only food he could stomach was chappie. Recommended by my vet.
AngelDelightUK · 24/02/2021 08:59

Have you told the breeder how poorly Oreo is? Just wondering what their reaction was as that would speak volumes.

Definitely tell the BVA about the certificate

Selling a puppy less than half the normal expected weight, with a worm burden so severe the pup had anaemia and dehydration and no energy with a faked vaccination card speaks volumes!
The breeder will give no fucks whatsoever

mumnosbest · 24/02/2021 12:03

After a positive evening and a good checkup this morning, she's gone down hill again . She's truffles to stand after her last feed and felt cold so I've taken her back in to the vets. We're now having to consider how long we can keep paying fees without any sign of recovery Sad

So sorry to hear this latest update. How very worrying and sad for you Flowers

BigWolfLittleWolf · 24/02/2021 12:20

She didn’t have insurance taken out then, either by the ‘breeder’ or yourself once bought.
Poor little pup.
I hope she recovers.

In future OP, if you do decide to get a dog again, read up and learn to recognise the size and weight of your chosen breed at 8 weeks, read how to recognise signs of illness in puppies eg big bloated bellies (worms), being calm and placid (puppies should be very lively) etc.

Check that the ‘mum’ has visible saggy belly and teats hanging and that’s you like her personality.

Remember that vaccinations are done at 8 and 12 weeks so a puppy under 12 weeks cannot be fully vaccinated.

It is a legal requirement for the breeder to have microchipped the puppy so make sure this has been done.

A good breeder should be questioning you and making sure their puppies are going to a good home.
Breeders who operate on first come serve basis and/or whoever offers the most money is a major red flag.

ANd make sure you are insured, most breeders sell their puppies with 4 weeks free insurance though farm collies often don’t.
The better farm collie breeders will have registered their puppies with the ISDS (International Sheep Dog Society)

BigWolfLittleWolf · 24/02/2021 12:30

Just quickly, I’ve just thought!
What wormer did the vet use?
Some collies are MDR1 positive and can’t have certain medications.
If your vet used a wormer with ivermectin as the main ingredient your puppy could be reacting to that.
I’d check with the vet she hasn’t been given ivermectin

Oh no! This is not the update we wanted to read. I hope your pup soon rallies around and this is a blip only Flowers

I don't know that this is the time or place to go into lecture mode @BigWolfLittleWolf
The OP knows mistakes were made out of a lack of knowledge, she's trying really hard to solve the issues and there is a little puppy here to consider too so it's heartbreaking.

It's highly unlikely that she's been given ivermectin - it's an injectable and not routinely used.

Some of the related oral meds can also cause problems in collies but the vet should be aware of this

I didn’t mean for it to come across negatively.
The OP didn’t realise the pup’s size was abnormal or that the energy levels were wrong or that big bellies indicate worms.
It was intended to be helpful to stop OP falling into the same trap again

My vet didn't know this. It was only through my own research that I found out and had to tell them!

Poor Oreo, I hope she recovers soon. Don't give up on her.

TheChip · 24/02/2021 12:49

I hope she pulls through! Poor wee thing. 😢

Oh no! Has she been checked for parvo?
SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 24/02/2021 13:26

Thinking of you and Oreo.

I had so many ups and downs with my foster pups. I was told that the outcome was bleak frequently. My heart cracked daily.

They all made it. Praying you get the same outcome 🐾 🐾 x

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 24/02/2021 13:29

Sad poor pup.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 24/02/2021 13:36

Oh, bless her.

I hope she pulls through.
