My dog has prostatitis. He's been hospitalised, but home tonight because he wouldn't eat. They hoped home comforts and favourite foods would tempt him. So far no luck (came home about 10pm).

I'm on the living room floor with him tonight. DH has gone to our bed, as he's working tomorrow.

Any hand holding or advice gratefully recieved. I'm so scared he's not going to pull through this. (He's almost 13, a Lhasa Apso.) He's been asleep but wakes up crying and tries to change position then dozes off again. Going back to vet first thing in morning so trying to just let him sleep and not worry too much, so I can get some sleep, but its easier said than done

I wouldn't worry about his tail, it'll feel odd to him.
I had positive news myself from the vet; my girls results came back and she is cancer free; the excision got all the tumour and cells 😁😁
Hopefully a good weekend for all the pups 🤞🏼

AndroidSheep · 13/04/2019 20:51

Oh @bookworm4 that's fantastic news! I'm so pleased for your girl and for you. Is she still on chicken and rice or has she moved on to normal food? What a strong, brave girl she's been. Smile Give her a big squish from me.

Hi I'm just jumping in if I can help , I haven't read all the thread but have struggled like you are many times over the years with My various old boys and trying to get them to eat when they are ill
I've found that hand feeding can work , I think it's physiological in many instances , the dog is trying to please you by taking it rather than wanting it but in doing so at least gets a little in their belly which can increase as they feel stronger
Also pretending I'm eating it then offering a bit of 'mine ' to them makes them feel special and a little tempted
I literally went through my fridge and cupboards to see what I could offer
Syringe is very useful , milk or gravy or water ( maybe electrolytes )
Fresh cooked is tempting
One time I fed for ages with a tea spoon which worked fine until I got them eating properly again - actually placing a small mouthful on the tongue bit like a baby ( that was the small tins of canine recovery food

Hope your boy is on the mend xx

Bookworm4 · 13/04/2019 23:59

@androidsheep
Thank you, I'm beyond relieved.
She's still on light meals 3/4 times a day; also eating porridge, scrambled eggs until some stitches are removed on Monday.
I will pass on the squishes.

Awww what a sweetie Bookworm and such a positive update Android! The video description made me giggle Grin

AndroidSheep · 14/04/2019 15:36

Such a beautiful girl @bookworm4. I'm so glad she's got the all clear.

I'm still at the hospital with him today. He's been out for a walk with staff and eaten 3 slices of someone's lunch ham, had 2 slices of ham from me, a bit of sausage and a whole dog chew (torn into teeny bites) and had a wee daft 5 minutes prancing around on the grass.

He's now curled up having a nap and I don't want to leave him! It's the most comfortable he's looked all week.

@Android, thank you I'm so relieved.
Sounds like your boy is on the mend with his appetite back. Have they said if he might get home soon?

TheSassyAssassin · 14/04/2019 18:15

Ooh that sounds like we might be celebrating a home-coming v soon Smile

spiderlight · 14/04/2019 20:01

Good news all round, Android and Bookworm! You must be massively relieved! They're both gorgeous.

AndroidSheep · 14/04/2019 22:24

The board keeps eating my posts tonight! 5th time lucky!

Fingers crossed Sassy. They haven't said much about coming home, just that he needed to eat and take tablets. 'His' vet is off this weekend, so I need to wait and speak to her properly tomorrow.

Thanks for your suggestions @flabbythighs, I appreciate them. We're too far away from hospital for freshly cooked to work, but I didn't know canine recovery food existed. He's turned his nose up at sardines and cocktail sausages that the nurses and care assistants brought in - that's how he ended up with someone's lunch!

He seems happier now. We stayed a long time today (It's his birthday, after all, 13 today). He was giving kisses and had a good nap. We had to wake him up to go back to his bed (he was very unimpressed with that idea).

One last photo from today. You can see his poor nose is getting dry, but he looks a bit more alert.

@AndroidSheep sorry I haven't checked in again until now. Happy birthday to your little baby boy 💙 get well soon!

Alicewond · 15/04/2019 01:43

He is so gorgeous, I just want to cuddle him and tickle his belly. He is in the best care and has the best family, he’s a lucky boy x

TheSassyAssassin · 15/04/2019 07:43

Oh lovely that you spent so much time with him on his birthday. Hope the update from his vet is a good one today 🤞🤞🤞

AndroidSheep · 15/04/2019 18:57

Guess who's home?

King of The Castle on his own bed. He's home with many many tablets, and strict instructions to call anytime, but definitely on Wednesday to update on how he's settled.

Hasn't been eating much today, they're hopeful he'll pick up at home. Still wary of the back legs/ spine being involved, but basically taking a "time will tell approach" he's fallen asleep twice now. Straight into garden when came home, then to his bed and crashed out.

I queried the pawing at his face and not chewing on that side. Vet can't see anything, so watch and wait - could well be toothache or yet another infection site.

He sends slobbery kisses to everyone who helped him get this far. Thank you all.

Will still be coming back to this thread for further updates

I’m so happy he is home ❤️❤️❤️

flabbythighs · 16/04/2019 05:00

Fabulous news , so pleased he's home Smile

AndroidSheep · 16/04/2019 19:40

Keeping on your good side @mcjx...
He's not up for eating dog food. Vet recommended Chappie, DH is still reeling from the look of disgust he got when he served his lordship Chappie this morning. Ive tried 'bitesize fresh chicken with vegetables for small dogs' Hmm. Sniffs, but nah. Sardines got a lot of attention, he's now in a huff because I wouldn't let him bury the sardines under my washing.

He eventually agreed to a teaspoonful of cheese and 3 cocktail sausages. He also convinced DH to part with 3 slices (~80g) of ham at lunch time.

Vet says lab tests are inconsistent with pancreatitis, so at the minute that's no longer their main concern and he can have cheese.

He asked for a walk, and enjoyed a wee toddle around the block (too scared to over exert him). He's asleep again.

Sorry, got ahead of myself! Thanks again for all well wishes. It's so lovely to have him home again, this house is very empty without a dog. Hope your girl is doing well bookworm, Sassy you'll regret giving kisses, he'd be lying on your feet or your lap if he could. Smile

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 16/04/2019 20:47

❤❤❤ fantastic news, so glad he's home. Baby steps but he'll be much happier in his own bed.

Bookworm4 · 16/04/2019 21:02

@android
Thank you, she got half her stitches out yesterday and is allowed a 15 min on lead walk. Another food I used to tempt was pasta tuna- no sauce- scoffed the lot!

AndroidSheep · 16/04/2019 21:31

Aww, that's a great step forward. 15 minute walks sound really exciting to me right now! Is she feeling more herself do you think?

Tuna pasta, you say? I'll try that tomorrow. Just had some success with 50g chicken, 6g of sausage and about 70g of rice - almost all gone! He definitely likes the sausage flavour just now, just chicken and rice was a no go.

Ate that, asked out, ran and barked at the Husky he doesn't like, came back in and crashed out on his bed again. I left the room, looked back and he was eating. Saw me, spat it out, and hobbled back to his bed.

What have I created?!

Awww...he'd be most welcome on my lap or feet! if he can turf DCat off that is Wink The eating sounds better this eve, diva-demo aside Grin
