My dog has prostatitis. He's been hospitalised, but home tonight because he wouldn't eat. They hoped home comforts and favourite foods would tempt him. So far no luck (came home about 10pm).

I'm on the living room floor with him tonight. DH has gone to our bed, as he's working tomorrow.

Any hand holding or advice gratefully recieved. I'm so scared he's not going to pull through this. (He's almost 13, a Lhasa Apso.) He's been asleep but wakes up crying and tries to change position then dozes off again. Going back to vet first thing in morning so trying to just let him sleep and not worry too much, so I can get some sleep, but its easier said than done

Glad he's perked up and got out in the sunshine 🐶☀️

Aww great news so far. And gorgeous pics - keeping everything crossed for further positive updates OP Flowers

Beautiful pictures! Glad to see him on the mend ❤️

TheSassyAssassin · 10/04/2019 23:38

Gorgeous pics, bless him! Hope tomorrow's visit sees further improvement Smile

mcjx · 11/04/2019 17:02

Any update today OP??

AndroidSheep · 11/04/2019 18:51

We didn't stay long today. He saw both a neurologist and an osteopath, lots of poking and prodding without pain relief, so very tired and wobbly.

Good news:
-Out of ICU and onto normal ward.
-He ate some treats
-He's drinking (but still getting some IV fluids so not much)
-He tried to run over when he saw us.
-He cried to be taken out rather than peeing on the floor, so bladder control is coming back.

Less good news

  • still in a lot of pain
-crossing back paws when walking, and very wobbly. -osteopath says might be some spondylosis there. -he wont eat actual food, and needs to to be able to take his painkillers/antibiotics as tablets. -he didn't want to walk far today (about 50-100 yards. I think DH pushed him a bit hard yesterday, going right round the carpark)

We've tried his usual food, salmon and rice, cheese, pate, sausage, chicken. He sniffs, but turns his nose up.

Anything else your dogs love that might tempt him?

I didn't see your post there @mjcx before I updated. Thanks for asking after him. He's such a good boy, and looked up a nurse with just total adoration when he was collected (I suspect that nurse had very tasty treats and maybe a few cuddles for him).

I've been hiding tablets in pieces of very smelly frankfurters for my girl.

AndroidSheep · 11/04/2019 20:54

I'll see what I can find @bookworm4, thank you. Off to hunt around Tesco. He likes the matthesons smoked sausage, I tried that today. We'd all be much happier if he would eat. It makes me worry he's in more pain than we realise Sad.

All bendy birds still crossed for him.

We use cream cheese for the dogs' tablets.

mcjx · 12/04/2019 03:08

@AndroidSheep Thanks

AndroidSheep · 12/04/2019 15:59

Afternoon everyone.

His vet is happy with him today. He ate a wee bit of wet food last night and this morning and some treats. Ultrasound shows inflammation going down and fluid around prostate decreasing. Same ultrasound person as Monday who said he seems much more comfortable and relaxed.

We took him outside to see if he'd relax a bit more (no). Happily pottered around sniffing flowers and asked DH for tummy tickles (given how sore he was, that's huge). Didn't eat anything we took with us, but finally managed to poo, which vet was happy had no blood in it.

He's showing his personality now, making noises at staff, looking for attention and going in a huff if he doesn't get it.

Vet is happy with him but would like him more over the hump than he is so far. He really needs to eat properly so he can get onto tablets rather than IV and injectables, or they'll place a feeding tube on Monday and repeat the CT scan.

Small steps but positive ones, hopefully his appetite will improve over the weekend 🤞🏼🐶

MrsMozartMkII · 12/04/2019 16:06

Sounds positive.

TheSassyAssassin · 12/04/2019 16:58

Compared to your original few posts, that's so much more positive. Very pleased to read your update Smile

mcjx · 12/04/2019 20:00

@AndroidSheep thank god he's eaten a little bit, what a positive update! Please update with pics next time, I'd love to see him 🤣

mcjx · 12/04/2019 20:00

@AndroidSheep sorry ignore the laughing emoji! My fat pregnant fingers pressed the wrong thing. I meant to put a ❤️

AndroidSheep · 12/04/2019 23:17

Aww @mcjx, no worries.

Vet phoned back a wee while ago. He's eating chicken - if it's hand fed to him. She was just finishing her last shift until Monday and sounded quite excited. (After she realised I thought she was phoning with bad news).

I'll try to get a better photo tomorrow - this is from today but very similar to the one from yesterday. (That's scrambled egg, it just looks like popcorn!)

@bookworm4, @TheSassyAssassain, @MrsMozartMkII.

Thank you all. It is feeling more positive, and hopefully his appetite will keep getting stronger, and so will he. It's hard to believe he's come so far. I'm sure all the positive thoughts and concern are pulling him along as much as they are me. I'm so glad you're all here, as well as @mcjx and @Alicewond.

TheSassyAssassin · 13/04/2019 00:27

Well we'll be here with you to celebrate his home-coming soon I'm sure Flowers

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 13/04/2019 00:29

I have read this thread all at once. So glad your gorgeous boy is improving.

Alicewond · 13/04/2019 02:14

@AndroidSheep I’m so happy he’s doing better, you only know how much you love your pets to extremes when you celebrate them pooing! Hopefully he’ll be back at home soon and wondering what all this fuss was about x

AndroidSheep · 13/04/2019 17:57

Absolutely @Alicewond, never thought I'd be so excited by that!

No real change today. He was drinking from a bowl while we were there, and someone managed to get him to eat 50g of ham this morning. He still wouldn't eat for me, and was quite huffy.

Didn't get to speak to his vet today, general update was that he's comfortable and responding to medication. I think he's been fussed over quite a bit, but at weekend there aren't as many staff around for that. I have a great video of him pottering around grass followed by "don't go near the road Ozzi." (Picture changes to tree)
"No. "
Sky, grass, sky, grass
"NOO! " as video cuts out. So I'd say he's feeling better.
(He didn't make it to the road. He's still very slow, just managed a faster jog than I expected when I let go of his lead)

He seems to need out frequently, so we had 3 mini walks, just a few hundred yards each time. He followed me out of the room today, and would have headed to play with other dogs. He found a woman leaving her dog and let himself be patted and told he's a lovely boy. (He's a wee diva. Flattery is everything.)

Just a couple of photos, wee bit worried about the tail down stance on grass, but DH think he's just sniffing and resting his tail because its heavier than usual.

OP posts:
OverFedStanley · 13/04/2019 19:09

So glad he is getting a bit better - It could be the bandage which is why his tail is down - they can be very heavy these bandages you know...
