My dog has prostatitis. He's been hospitalised, but home tonight because he wouldn't eat. They hoped home comforts and favourite foods would tempt him. So far no luck (came home about 10pm).

I'm on the living room floor with him tonight. DH has gone to our bed, as he's working tomorrow.

Any hand holding or advice gratefully recieved. I'm so scared he's not going to pull through this. (He's almost 13, a Lhasa Apso.) He's been asleep but wakes up crying and tries to change position then dozes off again. Going back to vet first thing in morning so trying to just let him sleep and not worry too much, so I can get some sleep, but its easier said than done

She's definitely getting back to herself, would stay out longer but we have to be cautious as the excision went through a muscle at top of her back leg and that takes awhile to heal. The sausage/frankfurters definitely work for us.
Ozzi boy sounds like he has his spark back if he's having a woof at huskies 😂

Alicewond · 17/04/2019 02:12

Aww so pleased he’s doing better, definitely try tuna pasta, it’s a real treat for dogs!! Mine both have loved it, little noses go mad with the smell. Will catch up on his adventures with your next post x

AndroidSheep · 17/04/2019 19:09

No readmission tonight or feeding tube!

Vet is delighted that he ate yesterday and that he has eaten today, says just to watch closely for any problems and call if anything worries us.

I'm glad your girl is feeling better bookworm. That sounds really painful - is she allowed to do stairs yet?

OP posts:
Bookworm4 · 17/04/2019 20:38

Great news he's staying at home 😁
No she's not allowed stairs until the muscle has had a good chance to knit, another 2 weeks. Fortunately during the school holidays there myself and teenagers were sharing sleeping downstairs with her as even if we carried her up she'd probably try and jump into beds.

mcjx · 19/04/2019 03:23

@AndroidSheep how is little Ozzi? Keep thinking of him 💙

AndroidSheep · 19/04/2019 09:42

I'm not sure @mcjx. He didn't eat much yesterday (nothing for DH, a bit for me that he vomited straight up. Left him an hour or so, he ate some cocktail sausages and kept them down.) He's finished the appetite stimulant. Excited about walks but otherwise just sleeping. If he doesn't perk up today I'll need to phone vet back, see if they'll give some more appetite stimulants. He's lying in the sun just now. Keeps burying food he's offered.

@bookworm 4 - can't blame her, people beds are always the best. Smile

@android
I'll keep my fingers and all of the 12 paws here crossed that he's not going back to vets.

AndroidSheep · 19/04/2019 10:00

Thanks bookworm. I've just gone into living room and found him lying along the back of the sofa looking out the window. I'm taking from that he's not in pain, if he's feeling well enough to jump and balance like that (not today's photo, but this is what he's doing. Ignore the nose art!). That's cheered me up a wee bit!

Hello folks. Hope your Easter Sunday has been less eventful than ours.

Ozzi avoided the vet today, but only just. They've changed his painkillers (given him Buprenorphine.), anti-sickness tablet and appetite stimulant again.

Struggling to get antibiotics into him, he won't take any food so have to pin him down, open mouth drop it in and rub throat. He's now totally out of it with the painkillers. He wasn't noticeably in pain, so not sure why the change to something so much stronger (vet wasnt there when I collected meds, so couldn't ask).

OP posts:
AndroidSheep · 21/04/2019 17:33

He also burped up white foam as soon as I got tablets swallowed. Just indigestion or should I be worried do you think?

Vet wanted to see him if he got lethargic, but prescribed painkillers that we know totally knock him out. I'm very confused by this, and reluctant to give him next dose of painkillers (due at midnight), because he can't eat if he's spark out on floor and I won't be able to tell if he's getting more lethargic. Sad

BiteyShark · 21/04/2019 17:53

Maybe they thought a change in pain killers might do the trick as often they are in pain but don't always show it.

However, if you worried about the lethargy could you phone the out of hours cover attached to your vets for advice?

AndroidSheep · 21/04/2019 20:18

@Biteyshark. Thank you. DH is insisting I ignore for a while. He's gone through a wobbly stage, a "whose fascinating paw is this?" stage, and is now snoring. It was out off hours at the vet hospital who prescribed new meds, so I'll phone them back if he doesn't improve. Ive been watching him for the last few hours, he seems to just be sleeping now. I think its just very strong painkiller. No more vomiting so think that could have been from swallowing lots of air when tried to get those pills into him.

Poor little baby Sad I think about and check this thread everyday!

TheSassyAssassin · 22/04/2019 09:09

Hi Android! Sorry to read your updates as it had seemed so positive last time I checked! The foam thing will just have been as a result of trying to get his medication into him so don't worry unduly about that. But why the need to change his meds in the first place? What happened? Because he had seemed so much brighter? Hope he's had a peaceful night and I think you need to get hold of his usual vet there as soon as he or she is back after Easter Flowers

AndroidSheep · 22/04/2019 11:16

He was much brighter Sassy, but stopped taking food again, then vomited bile 3 times on saturday night. I was worried about the vomiting so phoned the hospital. They said they would prescribe anti-sickness meds, I asked for the appetite stimulants again, since his last dose was Wednesday, and that's the closest to normal eating he'd been. They asked me to phone back on Sunday morning and let them know how he was.

Sunday they thought about calling him in, but I said he was much more himself, seeing us off at the door, barking to be let out, all waggy tailed. Resident on call agreed with Saturday's resident, but wanted to add in different painkiller, because codeine might be making him nauseated. I agreed. I didn't ask what they were switching to.

How is he today? Any improvement?

spiderlight · 22/04/2019 13:05

Sorry to read that he's been through a rough patch again. I hope today's better. It's such a worry when they absolutely won't eat :(

AndroidSheep · 22/04/2019 15:04

He's less wobbly, sniffing at food. Got his meds into him with minimal fight (still woozy). Walked about 50m happily sniffing, tried a wee run, played with neighbour's dog, but wanted carried home.

Haven't given him midnight or 8am doses of buprenorphine, he's coming back into himself.

OP posts:
TheSassyAssassin · 22/04/2019 16:12

Bless him. Sounds like he's comfortable at any rate. Are they any closer to understanding what is going on internally?

AndroidSheep · 22/04/2019 17:35

Internally they think bacteria from prostatitis spread to cause all the other
-itises. Anti-biotics supposed to get that under control (3 weeks of course left). They've stopped investigating and just treating with painkillers and antibiotics.

We've popped out for a while to see if he'll "steal" the dinner we've left down for him. I suspect we're in for a few more days of this until the buprenorphine is out of his system.

No real idea why he's not eating, except possibly feeling sick from painkillers, or just feeling out of sorts from the infection.

TheSassyAssassin · 22/04/2019 20:59

Hope he ate in your absence? Is he due to be rescanned at all to check progress?

AndroidSheep · 22/04/2019 21:02

Unfortunately he didn't eat in our absence. He did take himself upstairs though.

He's due to be rescanned at follow up appointment in 3 weeks. They were going to do another CT if they placed a feeding tube, which might still happen.

OP posts:
TheSassyAssassin · 22/04/2019 21:30

Oh bless him. Well he's still lots better than he was at the start of this thread so for now hold onto that Flowers

AndroidSheep · 22/04/2019 21:58

You're right Sassy, thank you. He is much better than he was at the start, he's done really well. I need to calm down and remember that. Thank you. Flowers
