My dog has prostatitis. He's been hospitalised, but home tonight because he wouldn't eat. They hoped home comforts and favourite foods would tempt him. So far no luck (came home about 10pm).

I'm on the living room floor with him tonight. DH has gone to our bed, as he's working tomorrow.

Any hand holding or advice gratefully recieved. I'm so scared he's not going to pull through this. (He's almost 13, a Lhasa Apso.) He's been asleep but wakes up crying and tries to change position then dozes off again. Going back to vet first thing in morning so trying to just let him sleep and not worry too much, so I can get some sleep, but its easier said than done

Hi Android/Ozzi's mammy
My shirk is doing much better, she's delighted to be allowed short walks and appetite has came back with a bang.
I really hope the vet can get your wee boy stable and sort out medication so he can get back to his usual rascally-ness xx

spiderlight · 27/04/2019 12:26

So glad he's responding!

BiteyShark · 27/04/2019 12:35

So glad they think they know what is wrong. Fingers crossed for a good recovery Thanks

AndroidSheep · 27/04/2019 16:39

Thank you everyone.

I'm pretty sure I recognise you incogneto, hope everything's going well for you and your exciting arrival.

He's looking great today. Went for a good walk, wanted to play with other dogs we met. Took a friend with me who often dog sits for me, she was amazed at how good he looks today.

He's responded really well and really quickly to treatment. Eating breakfast and dinner for them (wont take treats from us yet).

Hoping this is a definite corner-turn and he's properly on the road to recovery now. He's off of his painkillers and anti-sickness tablets, if all going well they'll switch his injected antibiotics to tablets tomorrow.

That all sounds really good, home soon hopefully 🐶

incogneto · 27/04/2019 19:49

Lovely update, god bless him 💙

Alicewond · 28/04/2019 03:05

@AndroidSheep so pleased for you x

AndroidSheep · 28/04/2019 10:09

Thank you all.

They've switched his antibiotics to tablets today, and said they're really not doing much medically for him so he could come home. We've said we'd like them to show us how they do tablets, because it was stressful for all of us while he wouldn't take them in food, and he's now refusing that food. We'd also like to know he's properly settled on oral anti-biotics, and coping with everything, so we'll get him home tomorrow when "his" specialist is back in. I'd like to ask a few questions too, and they're all obviously busy and difficult to get on the phone.

Yay! Fantastic news! And such a relief for you. Good to have you back little Ozzi! Smile xx

AndroidSheep · 30/04/2019 07:54

He's home with us now, he came home last night. He took his Addisons tablet no problem, but still won't take his antibiotic in food. Had to crush it and syringe it with water.

He's to go back as an outpatient for some follow-ups next week. I'm just so unbelievably glad to have him safely home with us. Those vets pulled him back from death's door on Wednesday night (probably on his first admission too). He's so incredibly lucky to have been under their care, to be so quickly diagnosed and treated. He loved his vets too, they were obviously really good to him. We'll never be able to thank them enough.

And the same to those of you who sat up with me, who held my hand and listened to me, each time I thought he wasn't going to pull through. I can't describe how much I appreciate that.

Hopefully his follow up next week will reveal infections have cleared and that he's doing well on his steroids. If not, we'll need to do some more investigations.

So glad he's home!!

When our old boy needed regular tablets, we used to buy amazon.co.uk/Vivi-Treats-making-medicines-treats/dp/B001HWFIXY/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=vivitreats&qid=1556609486&s=gateway&sr=8-1 these]] to hide them in.

Great news he is home, hopefully this is him sorted and you can breathe. xx🐶

AndroidSheep · 01/05/2019 22:43

Thanks spiderlight, can they be split up? I think the anti-biotic just tastes horrible - he'll take the other in food now, but not that one.

He's still doing well. I'm starting to breathe again!

Yes, they're quite squishy (sort of a play-doh consistency) and we used to cut them in half.

So glad he's doing well :)

incogneto · 05/05/2019 20:08

Any updates @AndroidSheep? 🐶💙

AndroidSheep · 05/05/2019 20:27

Nothing exciting to report back @incognito (long may it stay that way!). He's almost back to his old self. Jumping up on furniture, demanding walks (going in a huff when we say no to the long version). Refusing dry food, but we can cope with mixing some wet food into his dinner.

Finished his course of anti-biotics for prostatitis (thank goodness, getting those into him was not fun). He's to go back to hospital on Thursday to have prostate checked for lingering bacteria (under sedation), and his enzyme levels checked, if those are good he'll come off of his fludrocortisone tablets and onto the monthly injection. He'll happily take the prednisolone tablet in a bit of hotdog, but looking into the treats spider light suggested and a bacon flavoured putty the vet hospital suggested too.

Fingers crossed all goes well on Thursday. I really can't believe the difference in him!

Hope all going well with you.

@AndroidSheep so glad to hear he's better! I haven't checked in for a while as I've finally welcomed my little boy.

Still wondered about your little Ozzi though Smile❤️

AndroidSheep · 05/05/2019 22:33

Oh congratulations incogneto ! I hope you're all doing well. Thanks for still worrying about my Ozzi.

Good news all round, new baby, new feeling better Ozzi, lovely to see nice stories for a change.
Congratulations @incogneto 💗

incogneto · 04/06/2019 00:25

Still think of you and Ozzi @AndroidSheep ❤️❤️

AndroidSheep · 04/06/2019 23:38

Thank you @incogneto. He's been doing really well. We had stopped the antibiotics
but last appointment showed infection wasn't completely cleared, so he's back on them (crushed, mixed with water and shot into his mouth via syringe is the only way, but we're well practised now!). Getting 1mg prednisolone daily, had one injection of zycortal, electrolytes checked about 2 weeks ago and they were perfect.

He's due back on Thursday for a re-check on the prostatitis under sedation, and his second dose of Zycortal. We'll get the result of the cultures in about a week, but until then he'll stay on the antibiotics.

He went to the groomer today, which seems to have taken a lot out if him. He's been sound asleep for hours.

Hope you and your little one are keeping well?

Came across the thread again;how’s the boy getting on?

AndroidSheep · 12/07/2019 11:11

Aw Bookworm, hello again! Thank you for wondering. Overall he's doing really well.

That prostatic wash in June showed bacteria still growing quickly, so he had another 4 weeks of antibiotics. Vet recommended castration to hopefully shrink his prostate, he had op on 24th June. Prostatic wash and scan repeated last week - prostate has shrunk already and finally looks clear of bacteria so no more antibiotics. We've been given the option of repeating the wash in another 4 weeks to be sure, we're pondering that just now.

Addisons is going well. The vet has shown us how to do his injections, and I did the last 2 in the vet surgery. Pred dose is being trialled at 0.5mg just now, zycortal down to 1.3mg/kg.

He's like a puppy again, bringing us toys to play with and prancing around the house. The vet keeps commenting on how young he seems (and how noisy he is in their kennels once he wakes up after his procedures).

Fingers crossed he is finally fully recovered - it's been a long road since April. I'm still a bit shocked at how well he's done, given how ill he was.
