Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

BiteyShark · 14/07/2017 10:28

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

Mine always poos when he is active so maybe schedule a play session in before settling down again to help things along if you are finding she poos early on in the night.

Definitely agree that they are so individual. If you look on here we all battle with different issues :)

biteyshark They are now due to arrive on Monday

We had arranged holidays from work for 2 weeks after her original arrival date and arranged a dog walker for after that. That whole plan is scuppered and we are frantically trying to sort everything out.

I'd made a huge order for all our supplies but that's not here yet

I am sure everything will work out

SkeletonSkins · 11/08/2017 12:39

Deepfried she'll be in a nice warm, dry house with food and love so already life will be infinitely better than where she came from. Definitely thrown in at the deep end though!

Think I might get pup neutered October half term. Don't want him to get even more fearful at the minute!

BiteyShark · 11/08/2017 12:51

Skeleton BiteyDogs neutering is timed with our dog carer going on holiday so I would have had to stay at home anyway or find another temporary day care. The only other suitable time would have been xmas and whilst that would have been better age wise I don't like the thought of having an OP just before the holidays so next week it is. Feeling a bit anxious about it but I am sure he will be fine.

Our dog was fine being neutered (he was 7 months) he didn't need to use the cone collar thing and recovered really quickly.

I'm nervous about getting the new pup done though as she's a girl and a smaller breed.

Veterinari · 11/08/2017 22:54

Skeleton definitely wait til the fear period / secondarary socialisation period is over before neutering! If he's anxious now then he needs the testosterone burst of puberty to gain his secondary emotional confidence before neutering - don't rush it!

Deepfried I'm v experienced with steer dog rescues - feel free to PM me. Just take it slow - consistency and predictability are key - remember everything is new!

bluetongue · 12/08/2017 01:23

Deepfried your situation sounds stressful. I've been where you are trying to coordinate holidays from work around the arrival of a new dog. Keep us updated and hope it all goes well.

DeepfriedPizza · 12/08/2017 17:51

Dh has managed to take extra holidays at short notice, as she's not arriving until Monday evening we don't need to take Monday off, phew. Dog walker has said she can start a week early so that's fab too.

I keep calling her a dog walker but she's coming over when pup is settled to asses if she starts with just visits or solo walks, she's experienced with rescue dogs too.

Nickname for here for new pup?deeppup? Friedpup? Pizzapup?

BiteyShark · 12/08/2017 18:04

DeepfriedPizza glad you have got things sorted for your new arrival. You can relax a bit more now Wine

I like all the kicknames but PizzaPup wins it 🍕

SkeletonSkins · 12/08/2017 18:23

Ahhhh so glad you've got sorted and definitely love PizzaPup as the nickname, can't resist a bit of alliteration. What time will you get her on Monday evening? I hope she settles quickly, bless her.

Skeleton pup turned his nose up at a cocktail sausage today..... very suspicious. Also barked at a suspicious man on our walk. Not enjoying this stage and quietly hoping it definitely is a stage and not just his new personality. At times of woe Bitey I hope you don't mind but I do think of your recall problems and how much better things are for you now. Although the recall has stayed in place we've lost just about everything else!

CornflakeHomunculus · 12/08/2017 18:31

Hang in there Skeleton!! DWhippet2 went through a ridiculously scaredy/sensitive phase at around a year which was made even worse by the fact we lost DDog1 (who he was very close to) during it. He came through it though and has matured into a lovely, confident chap.

SkeletonSkins · 12/08/2017 18:36

Oh thanks Cornflake that has given me some hope! My aim at the minute is avoid any situation which makes him feel uncomfortable and allows that behaviour to be repeated. I've tried having strangers offer him food but he absolutely won't take it and it doesn't help at all. Ignoring him seems to work best.

BiteyShark · 12/08/2017 18:54

Skeleton it sucks but yes hang in there but when it's happening to you it's so stressful and I think sometimes worse than the early puppy months because they are adult size and can be so wilful. I was at one time considering paying someone to walk him everyday because it was too stressful when he was at his worst. In just a few months the transformation is amazing and I know he is still improving and he seems such a different dog.

I'm trying to remember how old your pup is now as he is just a bit younger than BiteyDog.

OP posts:
SkeletonSkins · 12/08/2017 19:28

He's 8 months Bitey so fingers crossed we will make it to the other side!

BiteyShark · 12/08/2017 19:40

BiteyDog is 10.5 months so just looked back on the part 2 thread for June to see how bad he was at that age and yes recall was still awful at 8.5 months (I was having to do the walking off in the opposite direction all the time to try to get him to pay any attention to me).

Stock up on Wine, Brew and Cake until he gets over this blip.

Pizzapup is currently in Calais about to go on a train. We'll find out tomorrow an ETA for Monday.
They update the fb page with pictures of their journey and all the dogs look so sad Sad

BiteyShark · 12/08/2017 20:39

DeepfriedPizza my dogs resting face is a sad face. I used to say we bought a 'sad dog'. As soon as PizzaPup is in his new home and settled you will see a smile.

Well I've done it. Drove for over 6 hours today to leave her at her holiday accommodation. Yes. I cried. Proper ugly sobbing crying. But not until I was driving away. DH pointed out I've never been like that about leaving the kids! Blush I can't tell her I will be back. Feel rotten.
She on the other hand has explored her new home, met pigs, been fed freshly made liver cake as treats. Played with a friend and is sleeping already after eating all her dinner!

BiteyShark · 13/08/2017 06:27

Enjoy your holiday Wolfie. I think the hardest part for me when I leave BiteyDog is that he doesn't understand that I will come back as well.

I am tired today, was outside last night watching the meteor shower. BiteyDog kept running outside to nudge me to come in and sleep as he didn't like me outside alone but he didn't want to stay out with me as it was bed time Grin

Oh bless! I have had a text already this morning. She was quiet last night. No whining. Been out already. She knows and really loves the lady she's staying with.

BiteyShark · 13/08/2017 10:22

You can relax now Brew knowing she is loving her holiday as well Grin

Enjoy your holiday Wolfie

PizzaPup is in Kent and will be with us at 2am!!! On Tuesday

Wolfiefan · 13/08/2017 12:05

Thanks. Another update. She's enjoying a marrowbone in the sun! She won't want to come home. Shock

bluetongue · 14/08/2017 01:49

Sounds like big pup is having a wonderful break Wolfie. Hope you enjoy yours as well Smile

I'm all booked to go to Japan in February next year so will need to find Whippet worthy accommodation for Bluepuppy before then. Hopefully my finances will have recovered a bit before then!

I had a close call with Bluepuppy this morning. He's getting restless being on restricted activity after being neutered so I decided to take him for a gentle (ha!) walk down to a local cafe. I'd finished breakfast and coffee and managed to keep him out of trouble with treats so went to unclip him to go home. Silly me managed to have him entirely unclipped for a couple of seconds and he legged it. The cafe is on a blind corner and with my heart in my mouth I could see a car coming and Bluepuppy running in the direction of the road. I called him and he ran back in my direction but didn't look like stopping. Luckily there was a strapping young man on the table next to me who rugby tackled him to the ground. Even after that Bluepuppy still nearly managed to wriggle out and escape again Shock

I swear it's like having a fully fit racehorse on box rest with him. Luckily his wound is fine. I've put the cone of shame back on for now. To try and slow him down as much as anything.
