Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

Oh dear blue glad bluepup was rugby tackled before he could get away. Mine is bloody fast when he wants to be so I know yours will have been even faster.

1 day till BiteyDog goes in for his op and I am having a wobble (pfp Grin).

Let us know how Biteypup goes. It certainly hasn't slowed Bluepuppy down at all!

I really was super grateful for the guy bringing Bluepuppy down. It could have been a very different story if he wasn't caught so soon Sad

It will be my first 'basic dog manners' class with Bluepuppy on Sunday. We certainly both need it Grin

BiteyShark · 14/08/2017 08:33

On one hand I am not looking forward to having to keep BiteyPup calm as he pesters me to play ball a zillion times a day. But on the other I don't want any adverse reactions and want him well asap.

Did they give an idea of how long bluepup would be on restricted activities?

I need to have another read of the instructions but I'm pretty sure short on lead walks only until he gets his stiches out 10 days after the procedure. He will be doing a training class on Sunday but it's all on lead so should be fine. The incision and wound is really pretty small so I haven't been super strict at home. The biggest issue for me is that he's not able to go to day care until the stitches come out.

Each dog is different but Bluepuppy wasn't groggy at all when I picked him up. From memory my cats have been more drugged up after surgery so I wasn't prepared for Bluepuppy to be as spritely as he was!

BiteyShark · 14/08/2017 10:42

Ah good, I had heard 10 days as well so hoping the vets say the same thing as that will give me a few days before BiteyDog is due to go back to daycare.

Hi all, we bought home our puppy yesterday. Alfie is a 9 week old springer spaniel. He is gorgeous and slept well his first night. Kids love him but need to be told to leave him alone a bit haha. The wees and poos everywhere are definitely keeping me busy!

I've not read all the posts yet but the lows I have read are great. Lots of fab tips!

Welcome Speak and lovely Alfie. Have you had a Springer Spaniels before? I've heard they're rather lively Grin

Enjoy your lap sized puppy while you can. They grow so fast!

BiteyShark · 14/08/2017 11:57

Welcome speak. Mine is a cocker spaniel but I see lots of springers at our dog training. If he is anything like mine he will be lovely in the house but as mad as a box of frogs when you take him outside or he meets anyone new.

That sounds perfect Bitey. He's lovely and sleepy ATM, he likes pooing then having a nap!

DeepfriedPizza · 14/08/2017 13:35

Aww, how cute!

SkeletonSkins · 14/08/2017 14:57

Ahhhh welcome gorgeous new puppy! Glad your first night went well (and quietly).

DeepFried Hope you're not too nervous about PizzaPup's arrival, not long now!

SkeletonSkins · 14/08/2017 22:28

Much much better time at pup class tonight. He seemed more confident and a lot less skittish. In fact he was fab!

One thing that has definitely improved is his travel in the car. When we first picked him up he messed on the 5 min journey home! And he was petrified. He gradually improved but would cry/shake etc. I've done nothing other than use the car to take him to his daily walk and used sausages to reinforce the wait when I open the boot but he's a really fab traveller now - settles in the bark and sleeps, is silent and waits when told when the boot opens. I have to take my victories where I can find them!!

BiteyShark · 15/08/2017 06:07

Glad the training was good this week Skeleton. It's so good when they like the car so you can take them out. We also use the boot but I need to get a seat harness and get him used to travelling on the back seat as the boot will be needed when we go away on holiday next year in the uk.

She's here! They were way behind schedule so she only arrived at 6am. I've hardly slept

She's very scared which is understandable but she took a treat out if my hand but is just getting used to being around us.

BiteyShark · 15/08/2017 07:31

Oh no Deepfried I bet you are tired. Hope PizzaPup settles in quickly.

Left BiteyDog at the vets for neutering :( going to be on high alert for the phone as I will only hear anything if there is something wrong. Arghhh, off to comfort eat Cake

Ahhhhhh lots of Cake Bitey he will be fine but it's such a worry.

puppyl0ve · 15/08/2017 10:12

Help please! We brought our puppy home 2 weeks ago. Since his first night he's been sleeping downstairs in his crate no problems at all.
Last night he started crying and barking. We know it's best to ignore that behaviour so we did for half an hour but then we worried as we knew our neighbours would be getting annoyed! It really sounded like something was wrong. He got very loud (not like him at all) and it sounded like he was banging into the crate trying to get out.
We ended up bringing his crate up to our bedroom and he slept ok but I am already dreading tonight! Any advice welcome please! Should we leave him downstairs again and just see what happens? I just don't want him to get himself into a state again and think we will always come to him if he cries long enough.

BiteyShark · 15/08/2017 12:09

puppyl0ve did your pup pee or poo after it had woken up?

Mine would often wake at night but mostly for the toilet. Even if he didn't want the toilet I would pick him up and place outside to see if he would go then straight back in the crate without me saying anything or interacting with him.

Some people have the crate in their bedroom and then over a few weeks gradually move it away a bit at a time. Others sleep with them downstairs and then gradually over days etc sleep further and further away.

Have you checked to see if it is dark enough, that no noise or light woke him (although I am Envy of any pup that could sleep through at that age)

BiteyShark · 15/08/2017 12:20

I am hoping no news is good news which is good because there is only so much Cake I can eat. He had lost 0.5kg when they weighed him and I am really having issues with his weight as he won't put any on and you can start to see his ribs (his fur is cut short). Maybe after the neutering he might fill out a bit more.

puppyl0ve · 15/08/2017 12:43

Hi BiteyShark
No we took him outside before bringing him upstairs and he didn't need the toilet, and he hadn't already done it in his crate.
He has a black out cover so there wouldn't have been any light or any distractions.
Just seems very odd that all of a sudden he was upset being on his own.
I thought we'd had it too easy these past 2 weeks!!

BiteyShark · 15/08/2017 13:00

I have heard that sometimes things 'seem' very easy initially with some puppies (sleeping well etc) but as they settle in and grow in confidence then you might see more of the usual puppy behaviours. Maybe he is just growing up and is happier to be more vocal when he wants something?

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 15/08/2017 13:01

I think lex is going to come into season soon

Whenever I take her out for a walk now she pee's little and often and then rubs herself all over the floor scent marking

SkeletonSkins · 15/08/2017 13:02

There could have been a noise or something. I would put him to bed as normal tonight and if he cries in the night go down, no fuss or anything just put him outside and then straight back in the crate. If he learns that crying just means a quick wee in the garden he should give up.

bluetongue · 15/08/2017 13:21

Good luck with pizza pup deepfried.

Funny about the Cake Bitey. One of the reasons I got Bluepuppy was to get me exercising more. With all his issues I've taken to comfort eating and actually put on weight Blush At least pup is fit and model thin. The owner most certainly does not look like the dog in this house Grin

I'm sure Bitey dog will be fine. My vet surgery gave me a call after surgery even though all was fine which was good for me. Bluepupoy is so fine it's easy to forget he has stitches and needs restricted activities.

I couldn't get to sleep for ages last night. Kept having flashbacks to Bluepuppy getting loose and running towards the road. At his speed he could have easily been at a busy six lane road in under a minute Sad It made me feel like a rubbish dog owner to be honest.
