Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

BiteyShark · 14/07/2017 10:28

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

That's good Wolfie. Hopefully she'll take it in her stride.

That holiday accommodation looks lovely!

psyching myself up for another morning walk with pup and 2dc...

roundtable · 10/08/2017 08:14

We've had some random barking crate moments too.

I wonder if they feel a bit ill or unsettled sometimes. Usually sleep downstairs with them when it happens but it does panic me.

BiteyShark · 10/08/2017 08:40

Yes we are seriously looking at the caravan accommodation on that site you mentioned Skeleton. Whilst we can run off lead the fact that it is also enclosed in a small paddock area sounds very appealing if the weather it good.

roundtable it's so frustrating as DH just says put him in with us but that is not practical and necessary and for us will create issues later when he boards. He wasn't ill, he was bouncy and wanted to play grrrrr.

Sun pup is five days into her first season. Jrt x
I was putting off having her spayed until after the hols but she's beaten me to it. She's only six months, and whilst this is normal it's too soon in my eyes.
She's still a baby. Go away boys Confused

SkeletonSkins · 10/08/2017 09:47

Would absolutely recommend it Bitey. Never stayed in the caravan but there's some great walks straight from the site and nearby, lots of dog friendly beaches including the beach where Dobby died!

Wolfiefan · 10/08/2017 14:36

Definitely looks like a season! Erm swelling!
There will about five other wolfhounds! She will have her own sleeping quarters and won't be in with them all but she will have company. And acres. And freshly prepared raw. And her wolfie godmother. (Outs self!)
And she may well not want to come home Shock

Soubriquet · 10/08/2017 14:57

It's good to let small breeds have at least one season and be a year old before being neutered.

18 months-ish for medium breeds, and wolfie pup should be at least 2 before she's spayed

Is wolfiepup going to be bred from?

Wolfiefan · 10/08/2017 15:19

Hell no! No puppies for us! I haven't a clue what I'm doing. She also came from a litter of 14. 14!!!!!! C section birth.
She's a pet. Will spay but 2 is the earliest. A season may help them to mature. Spaying a giant breed early messes with growth and physical development.

Soubriquet · 10/08/2017 15:26

14?!!! Bloody hell thats a lot of puppies

Wolfiefan · 10/08/2017 16:08

Yes. They had their own room. There's a big risk with such a big mother too. It's 24/7 and due to c section they needed to feed some pups to help her out anyway. It was a real team effort!
I can understand people who show wanting to breed a "line" of dogs and create a successful family of dogs. That's not me!

SkeletonSkins · 10/08/2017 21:50

Can my (male) pup have a season please as he's a hormonal mess!! Definite regression going on here and apparently a 'tertiary fear stage' which can happen! Great!!!

Wolfiefan · 10/08/2017 21:54

We definitely had the fear thing. People. Traffic. The dark. The wind. Things in the garden at night. Noise. Etc etc. it passes. We kept going to different places but trying not to force her to face her fears to avoid flooding her.
Trust me. Seasons can be messy and smelly. You don't want that!

SkeletonSkins · 10/08/2017 23:10

He's just really unsure, definitely agree with not overdoing it and I'm trying to just bring him away and avoiding situations that he finds stressful. A man came flouncing through the door during his stay today and he almost growled (I could tell by the look on his face) but I just moved him away all happy and jolly and distracted him.

Does anyone make their own treats? The trainers always have like liver treats etc which work magic so might have a go at making some myself. After a tried and tested recipe.

Wolfiefan · 10/08/2017 23:12

I make liver cake. But blew up the hand blender! Can look out the recipe if you like.
Our fear period was characterised by running away and spinning on the end of the lead. Challenging when pup is wolfhound sized!

BiteyShark · 11/08/2017 05:00

Fortunately we didn't have much of a fear period but he varies from daft puppy to manic when he's having a hormonal bump. I got a dog to avoid all the season stuff but hadn't expected as much hormonal angst as we have had. Dogcare said he had the runs so we are using the 'can't remember the name' probiotic bunging agent. Wonder if his belly/peeing/nocturnal barking was all connected.

Booked the caravan for next year at that site. Looking forward to taking BiteyDog on his hols next year. Hoping he might have calmed down enough to take into a pub by then.

Good luck with a wolfhound in season Wolfie Grin

No more hormones here as Bluepup has been neutered today. He's fine. If anything it would be nice if he was a bit more doped up Shock Poor thing. His plastic collar is huge because of his long neck and nose (whippet) He really hates it and just sort of stands there. Of course once I take it off he runs around. For tonight I'm limiting him to the living room where I can watch him.

BiteyShark · 11/08/2017 09:58

Hi blue, BiteyDog will be joining bluepup next week as he is being neutered. I am opting for both collar and medical shirt to see which one he tolerates the best. I am so not looking forward to having to do on lead walks only.

Glad the op went well for you.

bluetongue · 11/08/2017 10:17

Bluepuppy sends best wishes to bitey dog.

So glad I've taken a couple of days off work next week. Then I'll be relying on my parents to look in him as he can't go to day care with stiches.

Think I need some Cake

BiteyShark · 11/08/2017 10:41

I am at home for the next two weeks as well :(. I think both him and me are going to go a bit crazy mostly stuck at home.

Hi - does anyone have any magic solutions to a little pup pooing in her crate.

Our last pup was brilliant in his crate - never messed. This pup (we've had her a week) is pooing every night. She's taken our every 3-4 hours at night but still messing.

Thanks in advance

BiteyShark · 11/08/2017 11:36

Could you adjust the times when you give her her food? How old is she?

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 11/08/2017 11:39

I have just seen that you have had her a week so maybe 9 weeks old? Mine needed to pee and poo more than most so until you establish a routine you might need to take her out more often OR if you are not sleeping near her use a baby monitor so you can hear her wake and quickly take her out then. Also make sure you clear up the mess thoroughly so it does not encourage her to keep doing in the same spot.

The charity we are rehoming our pup have made a major error. I just so happened to noticed on Facebook that our pup is on the van that left Romania yesterday instead of the one leaving in 2 weeks...

Freaking out

BiteyShark · 11/08/2017 12:01

DeepfriedPizza when will they be due to arrive and what do you still need to do before they get to you?

OP posts:
ruthsmumkath · 11/08/2017 12:03

Hi - she's 10 weeks - and sleeps in the dining room.

Our last pup - only 19months now - never weed or pooed in his crate and I left him from 11-5am from 7 and a half weeks. They are all individualsConfused

I will have a shot tonight at being more frequent and maybe feed her earlier too.

Maybe I need to move her upstairs - at the moment we have a huge c &c guinea cage in our room while we are getting some work done so I've not much space.

Last night was the first night she hasn't cried.

Thanks - I don't want her to get into a habit - and she's so good in the day.

I am sooo tired from late nights and early starts - I swear none of my kids were this tiringShock
