Does anyone fancy a puppy survival thread part 3

Continuation of the support thread.... anyone is welcome whether they have new or older puppies, just want a chat or are battling with ongoing puppy problems.

I thought I would start this thread off as I am hoping it might be the last one I need support from as BiteyPup is now 9.5 months old and we have survived the early puppy months and his teenage antics seem to be subsiding. Still working on our relationship and recall but it's getting better and can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel (fingers crossed) Wine

Poor wolf pup. We have that to look forward to. Wolfie pup can't be spayed until she's 2! Perhaps a run in a hired safe space?

SkeletonSkins · 14/07/2017 20:50

Checking in, thanks for keeping us going Bitey! We seem to be settling a little... had a fab time at puppy class. Pic will out me if anyone else goes to pup class but oh well - was so proud of his stay! He's the little black one.

Amazing recall Bitey, what an achievement and so much progress.

Poor blue with his tummy upset, glad he's better today! Our other dog is long coated and poo explosions have dire consequences....

That is to be proud of Skeleton, I should go back and do the next level of puppy class but it lost its urgency once pup seemed to just do what I want. It only falls apart when she doesn't Blush.
Wolfie, I read that some giant breeds may not come into their first heat till they are 36 months and then may only have a season once a year or so - it struck me as a very good reason to choose a giant breed dog!

Looking good SkeletonSmile

Bluepuppy's play date had to be cancelled. I went to clean up the pavers and it looked like a crime scene Shock There was blood and mucous mixed in with diarrhea and some splashes of bright red blood.

He still seemed bright enough but I got him checked out by the vet. He likely has colitis, is on antibiotics, a special diet and has to stay home and rest for a few days (ha!). Tested negative for parvo which is always good.

BiteyShark · 15/07/2017 05:04

Skeleton what a good pup. I remember you posting pics when he was new so he doesn't look like 'the little black one' any more as he certainly has grown Smile.

blue when ours was young we were at the vets a couple of times with bloody poos needing antibiotics etc. I found he bounced back very quickly once they get treated so fingers crossed bluepup is better soon. Shame about the play date but hopefully it can be rearranged soon.

BiteyDog was back to his normal self on our walk this morning. Not terrible but not as good as yesterday. I did think that would happen but at least yesterday showed me the dog he could be if we keep up his training Smile.

BiteyShark I always want to run out and get another puppy, but I didn't work when I got them and now I do so, I'll just enjoy all the puppy fun on here instead!

TheAntiBoop · 15/07/2017 16:17

Hello - picking pup up in a fortnight - is it ok to join now?

Feeling very nervous!!

BiteyShark · 15/07/2017 16:20

TheAntiBoop of course you can join now Smile. What breed are you getting?

OP posts:
TheAntiBoop · 15/07/2017 16:21

A miniature schnauzer - a boy!

Dh has had dogs but this is my first! Nerves not helped by every one I know telling us what a bad idea it is...

BiteyShark · 15/07/2017 16:39

We narrowed our pup down to three breeds, a Welsh terrier, a mini schnauzer and a cocker spaniel as they all can cope with long walks. In the end we discounted the mini schnauzer on account of their small size so we ended up with a cocker but I do still like the schnauzer as lots of personality in that small body Grin

OP posts:
TheAntiBoop · 15/07/2017 16:42

Yes the smaller size was what we were keen on!! Although they are always smaller than I expect!!

The kids are hoping for a lively one...

So what should I make sure I have before he arrives? I've been on all the other threads so think I'm there but is there anything people were really glad to have?

BiteyShark · 15/07/2017 16:47

Are you crate training? My best purchases ever were a crate, a baby gate, a baby monitor and a playpen other than the usual stuff. When he was very little the best toy was the flattened out material animal type ones that he loved to pick up and drag about. Oh have lots of kitchen towels and disinfectant for the inevitable accidents Grin.

I had also picked my vets and had arranged for him to be seen for a check up a couple of days after I got him to get all his vaccinations booked in etc.

OP posts:
TheAntiBoop · 15/07/2017 16:48

Have the crate but need to convince Dh that we do actually need the stair gate!!

BiteyShark · 15/07/2017 17:02

Oh yes baby gate is on our kitchen door and it's great and even now he is much older I still use it when I need to keep him 'safe' and can't have him running riot through the house but don't want to shut the door on him.

OP posts:
GooodMythicalMorning · 15/07/2017 20:00

We've gated the stairs, we want him to stay downstairs and human only upstairs.

TheAntiBoop · 15/07/2017 20:02

Well Dh is definitely of the 'humans only' upstairs opinion so will tell him it's a gate or a dog in his bed!!!

He hates gates - we didn't have them for the kids!!

GooodMythicalMorning · 15/07/2017 20:09

That's a good idea anti.

BestIsWest · 15/07/2017 23:32

TheAntiboop we picked up our miniature Schnauzer pup last week. We already have an almost two year old male mini. The two year old is a dream but I think the pup is going to be a bit of a thug. Nothing fazes him so far.
Lots of play fighting going on so far, I'm glad they're getting on but also feel we should limit it.

thesunwillout · 15/07/2017 23:49

Hi found you! In reply about spaying went to the vets and Sun pup can be done any time from now being a small breed. Decreases mammary cancer etc, so am thinking to book her in very soon before her first season.
Does feel a bit soon but with hols coming up be good to be on the mend.

BiteyShark · 16/07/2017 05:13

thesunwillout we are having BiteyPup neutered soon. It's slightly earlier than the ideal of 1 year old for my pup but I need to be at home for 2 weeks as he can't go to day care and avoiding holidays etc we are limited to times. I am now trying to decide whether cone or medical vest is the best thing post op as both have pros and cons.

OP posts:
GooodMythicalMorning · 16/07/2017 08:42

I'm not sure whether or not to have the boy done when he's old enough, so many conflicting views about it.

Taking him out to see two pugs today. Hopefully he'll have fun with them.

BiteyShark · 16/07/2017 09:34

GooodMythicalMorning I found lots of opinions but only a few facts from a couple of research papers. I have delayed it by longer than I initially thought but it will be 1.5 months before perhaps the ideal time but his growth (plotted by vet) slowed substantially a few months ago and he has no obvious behavioural issues to be a contra indicator. I have toyed with whether I should at all but my preference is to do it.

OP posts:
thesunwillout · 16/07/2017 10:24

Toyed with the idea here too. She'd make a great mum but I don't think I'd cope. She's here for a carefree life! The stupid snap crocodile bite is ongoing. It's weird.
Though she doesn't use it as a threat just when playing or greeting.
She had two retained upper canines until yesterday which the vet said they would remove during spay, but one is now on it's merry way.
They charge extra so let's hope the other one leaves soon, have bought her two new chew toys to aid!

BiteyShark · 16/07/2017 16:48

thesunwillout hope the chews help dislodge the canine.

BiteyDog is bonkers... his ball landed in his paddling pool so he got in to retrieve it then spent the next 10 mins repeatedly putting his whole head under water for no particular reason other than he liked it Grin
