Our puppy is fourteen weeks now - it's still a bit three steps forward, one hundred and sixteen steps backwards! Anyone else finding this?

Yay! Ours is sleeping about 11pm-6am as well but is still crying for half an hour when we put him down and not happy about going back to bed for an hour or so after he has got up. Although that part did go better this morning than it has before.

bigbutsrus1 · 13/03/2016 21:02

Was so exited when the whippet came second in crufts......what is happening to me Hmm

Mner · 14/03/2016 10:47

Finally pup went straight to sleep last night! We rejigged his routine and let him out 20 mins or so before bed rather than last thing, then let him get sleepy on the sofa with us before putting him to bed. And the cat sat on the edge of the sofa all yesterday evening, and didn't hiss or growl even when pup moved off the sofa to get his dinner. This morning was still bad but so pleased to be getting there!

We are struggling with DS and pup together. DS has never been one to walk when he can run. He gets the dog all excited, then complains when he jumps all over him. Sometimes the pup bites onto DS's clothes at the back on his leg. I've tried getting DS to stand still at that point but it either doesn't last long or the pup just chews his clothes. I've said to DS to squeal like a puppy when the pups bites but then DS just squealed when the pup so much as looked at him.

Morning's are fraught anyway trying to get out of the house... I shouted at them both this morning Sad I have ordered that puppy book - is it gwen bailey, and we will be doing puppy classes (when he has had all his jabs) but any tips in the meantime would be very gratefully received!

bigbutsrus1 · 14/03/2016 12:11

I have that puppy book, it's good. I have the training lady coming to us tomorrow. 2 hours for £60. Just thought we could get some training in or tips before training classes start at 12 weeks. Maybe the training place you're going to may offer the same thing? . Ours doesn't nip too much - yet. Our kids are 7 and 9 and try to play rolling around on the ground and pup does lick their ears and bit/pull their hair. Trying to get the kids to calm down a bit! We went to a friends house with a 6 month old boarder and he played in the garden for s good hour. He goes to bed fine from 11.30-6.30 now but does do about 4 wees in the space of 30 mins when we let him out! I am finding the kids and DH are getting lazy on "poo watch" though! I am slightly obsessed with watching his every move incase if a poo!

Mner · 14/03/2016 20:41

That's a good idea. I'll give them a call and see what they say. We're getting on a bit better with 'sitting' training etc. Hopefully it will all help!

Mner · 14/03/2016 20:41

Good news re night-time.

bigbutsrus1 · 15/03/2016 14:05

Just had the training lady at home. Was with us for 2 1/2 hours! Was really worth £60. We covered so much stuff. And was great being able to pick her brain. Now we have lots more training to do at home before classes start in 3 weeks or so. We even got him walking on the lead in garden, practising " leave", sit and stand. We covered lots of the things about how to stop jumping up when greeting etc etc. The pup and I are both shattered! Would definitely recommend a home home visit by trainer early on.

Mner · 15/03/2016 19:05

Sounds really useful! Jealous!

We've been looking at 2 possible trainers. One does home visits, the other just classes. I've emailed the one that does to see cost/availability etc.

foofooyeah · 22/03/2016 06:10

I was walking my dog yesterday afternoon and realised how far we had come.
He is nearly 8 months now.

Completely house trained, sleeps all night in his bed in the kitchen, fantastically sociable with other dogs, recall so much better, will heel (ok this really only happens well after a bit of a runabout) no more of that hideous puppy biting.

Just wanted to put this as encouragement for those struggling with a new puppy .... It is worth it. I have a very funny loyal lovable little dog now who I think I love more than DP!

Pippin8 · 22/03/2016 07:32

Foofoo that's good to hear. When does the puppy biting stop? Mine is 5 1/2 months & still constantly nipping me. She has just bitten a chunk out of my thigh 😢

foofooyeah · 23/03/2016 22:31

pippin give her another 3-4 weeks. I think it was around 6 months, suddenly we realised that the nipping had reduced dramatically. And now hardly ever. Still tries to grab at loose clothes sometimes.

How old is he Dixie? I know she's teething as I found half a tooth on the floor & today I noticed a big back one missing & blood on her chew toys. Sigh! If she just stopped this & the constant jumping up she'd be lovely.

Any tips on stopping that? I've tried ignoring & turning my back, slowing raising my knee & squirting with a spray bottle. None of it works.

buntymo · 24/03/2016 22:20

Can I join too? Grin I'm so excited our puppy comes on Saturday , I've waited until my oldest is nearly 12 so it's been a long time coming,

Mcullumswoman · 24/03/2016 22:45

My 16 week old yorkie chihuahua cross Milo, toilet trained on the whole and little accidents I can cope with, the nipping on the other hand is a challenge

Hi everyone!

Our pup has joined us today, our first ever dog so I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.
She came home at 1 and so far we've had no wee, no poo, are all her dinner but hasn't touched her water.
She explored for a bit when she got here and after a while starting whining and crying and ever since she has just slept. She will wake up for a bit and just lie there looking all sad and then go to sleep again.

I'm guessing she's very upset, understandably, over leaving her mum and siblings. Does this sound normal? Any advice on what we should/could do?

buntymo · 26/03/2016 21:08

First day for us too after 150 mile round trip to get her! She hasn't made a peep yet, lots of running around in rain but quickly got cold each time, we had fire on and a nice run down after. One wee one poo eaten a bit. She's very sweet, trying to restrain the 7 yr old who is very excited, well in bed now but will be up early, she's ssssoooooo cute!

Update on our whippet puppy.... He is nearly 12 weeks and had been with us for 3 weeks. He is fantastic! 90% wees and poos outside but that is by us regularly guessing or watching for signs. He sleeps from 11.30 till 7am in his crate, then does about three wees outside in the morning! He is a fuss pot with food and does like scrambled egg or cream cheese mixed in his dried food! He knows sit, leave and doesn't jump as much now. The cat still hates him and he did nip one of the children today. I am trying to teach them not to lay in the floor giggling whilst he jumps all over them (it may be fun now but not when he hurts them). He never tries to chew it nip me though? He has his first official walk out tomorrow! Although may be short lived as the weather looks horrid!

buntymo · 27/03/2016 22:45

So puppy has been with us for over 24hrs so far all going well. Cat is keeping its distance, puppy hasn't noticed her yet, when she goes in crate she is very happy, we haven't closed the door, only slight issue is her food intake. We have the same brand but she hasn't eaten much, and when I put down some dry she ate that. Has two different bowls of water, one near crate and one next to where she will eat, is it okay for her not to have it warm and mushy? She just licks it. Also poos have been a bit runny, perhaps cause she keeps nibbling on stuff around garden! She's very good so far

WhoaCadburys · 28/03/2016 00:40

bunty I think it takes a day or two for appetite to return. Is she used to having food mushy? Pic?!

buntymo · 28/03/2016 00:47

Oh dear crying puppy! I haven't been closing crate door and she had made it half way up stairs. She's had a drink and a wee and I've put her back in crate with door closed and she's crying Sadawww

fitflopqueen · 28/03/2016 17:29

I keep watching this thread to see how everyone else is progressing, our puppy is 14 weeks now.
Mouthing gets a bit bitey - worse in evening. Sleeps all night and only occasional excitement wees in the day. Is enjoying car journeys, I bought a canvas crate and she settles down happily.
I am using a soft harness rather than collar, what does everyone else do?

fitflopqueen · 28/03/2016 17:36

buntymo, your pup is lovely, mine also found the stairs very exciting to try and climb but she is much better now (had to buy a gate and 4 weeks on) and wanders back into the kitchen when I go upstairs.
Don't know why I didn't call her "shadow" though!

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 28/03/2016 17:38

Can I join? I have just got an 8 week old shih tzu puppy. Had her since Friday evening, and she has only pooed once!!!! I am getting increasingly worried... She has done some wees outside, had an accident this afternoon but just the one so far... Other than that she has done an awful lot of napping and a bit of playing, she is such a gorgeous little thing... But any poo advice would be greatly appreciated.

Mner · 29/03/2016 08:12

No advice on the pooing. When do you see the vets for their jabs.

Ours is 11 weeks now, getting used to the cat and better in the car. Normally really good at going outside for the toilet but we had 4 accidents yesterday!

Struggling with the nipping though. He seems to get into a bit of a frenzy sometimes - won't take a toy, just keeps launching himself at people trying to chew anything on them. Sometimes i think it's overtiredness. Tricky to break him out of this when he gets going!
