Our puppy is fourteen weeks now - it's still a bit three steps forward, one hundred and sixteen steps backwards! Anyone else finding this?

How can you resist a face like that! Grin

That is one very cute face 😊

Runawayandjointhecircus · 27/01/2016 13:15

How are the puppies today? Runawaypup is fine, am steadfastly ignoring the jumping, rewarding sitting/ feet on the floor. No change yet but hoping will work well in the long term!

frillyflower · 27/01/2016 15:15

Here's mine. Arthur. He's about 18 weeks now. Still refusing to walk down our drive for some reason though he'll happily run about in the park.

Looking forward to our first puppy class tomorrow, she doesn't leave my youngest dc alone (6 yrs old), constantly attacking her feet or jumping up at her, she's had a few nasty nips too.

Runawayandjointhecircus · 27/01/2016 23:22

Hope the class goes well alley! Our classes have been quite funny so far involving comedy dog/ owner/ trainer moments - but great for socialising anyway!

MightyMug · 28/01/2016 11:31

Mightypup is doing very well. He's started his classes and seems calm with other dogs. I love his personality - he's big and clumsy and a tiny bit goofy.

Runawayandjointhecircus · 28/01/2016 13:01

That sounds great mighty! Calm around dogs is the exact opposite of my pup who frankly goes bananas with excitement!

DollyMcDolly · 28/01/2016 13:28

My pup, Barnaby, won't walk with the lead. At all. I take him out in the garden and he just sits there. I haven't taken him out properly as it's been a week since his 2nd injections and I was told I had to wait 2 weeks. I have tried treats and nothing works. Any tips? He seems a very timid dog but I have been carrying him around outside so he gets used to noise and stuff

Runawayandjointhecircus · 28/01/2016 16:08

Have you tried letting him wear a lead without holding the other end so it just trains behind him? A light house line would work well. Also have you tried using a treat to get him to walk beside you as you would want him to, just without the lead on at all? My puppy was the same and that is what I did with her. It worked well. However, she now does pull like a train so not sure I'm the best example!

DollyMcDolly · 28/01/2016 17:16

runawayandjointhecircus I have tried both and nothing is working just now. I'll just keep trying because I'm sure he will walk eventually. Hope so, anyway.

MightyMug · 28/01/2016 21:05

Dolly There was a programme about puppies this time last year - I will see if I can find something on YouTube - I seem to remember that they said refusal to walk was usually fear, and to pick up and carry for a bit.

^^ It was called 'Six Puppies and Us' and was very good - it followed six families and their puppies from eight weeks through to adolescence and looked at the errors they made and things that went right. Some of it is on YouTube.

Glad I found you! We have 18 week old cocker spaniel (got him 9 weeks ago today) toilet training felt like it was never going to happen but after 2/3 weeks he was fully trained (still prefers to poo in garden than on walks but getting there!) he walks like a dream when just me or Dh but get kids involved or at puppy training and he pulls and tugs! Like recall does it perfectly when just us or friends dogs but puppy training and busy parks he is a nightmare! Need to keep persevering but it's hard work. DD's are 9 and 11 and dd2 is excellent at maintaining training but Dd1 still jumps about and wonders why he chases her 😡 Here's a photo of dd2 and her best mate

Thought it was going too well with house training... Just had the occasional wee indoors, but tonight ..... Two MASSIVE poos .... Which he then proceeded to bark at!

He had only been outside 5 minutes before.

Think I am going to have to go back to basics and start going outside with him again.

He didn't get a walk today as DP has hurt his leg and I was on a training course. Perhaps it was a dirty protest!! He does normally poo quite happily in the garden, it wasn't that he needed to go for a walk to go.

foofooyeah · 28/01/2016 22:27

And here is a pic of the poo monster

MightyMug · 28/01/2016 23:27

foofooyeah don't worry - things regressed with us a couple of weeks ago - he is lovely, I'm sure you will forgive!

runaway well not 'calm calm' just sort of puppy calm - as in didn't run for the hills or try and kill other dogs!

We had our first puppy class last night. It was really good, she was so calm around the other pups. She wasn't interested in the treats at all though so difficult to try and start teaching her the commands. I feel I know what I'm doing a bit more now though so we can practice at home a bit. Looking forward to next week.

MightyMug · 29/01/2016 11:48

alley did you feed her before she went? I try not to so they are hungry enough to work for the treats!

Any ideas for mental stimulation games. I'm going to buy a puzzle when I get time. I've been coming home for lunch & after 3 hours in the crate she is wild, so much energy. I usually toilet & feed her first then play ball for a bit. Yesterday I gave her this empty cardboard tray & she amused herself with it for 30 mins! I do the sit, stay, paw training with her & she gets it straight away then looks at me as if to say 'really, I'm far more intelligent than this'. We've done the hiding treats under plastic cups, she knocks the cup over eats the treat & then runs wild with the cup. If I don't amuse her she is chew crazy, destroys anything in her path.

ImBrian · 29/01/2016 23:16

foofoo I totally feel your pain. Mine has peed on the floor 3 times today! This morning I put him out, let him back in after 5 minutes he then waited half hour and did a mega piss (no wee since 10pm) under the kitchen table! Then twice tonight even though he's been put out!

I'm going to have to go back to standing in the garden! I think it's because I've stopped going out in the garden with him. Hopefully he just needs a reminder.

I've had to give Bud a hair cut, he mats as soon as he moves and it was getting in his eyes. He's no longer black though, a dark grey schnauzer type colour but very cute.

MightyMug · 30/01/2016 15:01

Pippin sometimes I just put kibble on the floor or scatter some sort of food in the garden, so that gives him some stimulation. I think I used to overestimate how challenging the stimulation needed to be - just something simple like that can keep him happy for a bit.

We bought an proper dog puzzle which he mastered in seconds - so not much stimulation there!

My pup is 9 months now and I thought we had it made. Toilet trained, great recall etc. That's all gone to pot over the last month. He comes back only if nothing more interesting is around. We've had to start walking on the extension lead again if other dogs are around. We still attend classes, and he is so good there. He is just so keen to play, and play and play.

NotTheSpiceOfLife · 31/01/2016 22:34

I picked up my gorgeous Belusky boy yesterday. He is almost 6 months old, and we rehomed him as an emergency from someone who is moving abroad tomorrow! I couldn't resist him.

However - there is lots of work to be done. He is not toilet trained in the slightest, I've been cleaning up poo and wee all day long, and I need to sleep in my own bed tonight, after a night of no sleep whatsoever...

Look at him though. And he's such a loving, cuddly boy
