Help - a Lovely but heavily pregnant Lurcher turned up at my door today

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 03:38

I know it's late & I know there's a thread for pointy hound lovers, but I seem to have acquired a heavily pregnant Lurcher, she was lurking round my house all day - very rural no near neighbours, every time I looked out the door she was there, very underfed but sweet & extremely sociable, after about three hours I crumbled & fed her, at which point I noticed she was HEAVILY pregnant & rather skinny.

I've taken her to the Vets', no chip, no report, so she's come back here, she had a show of mucus at the vets' and has been intermittently been panting very heavily, I've phoned the vet again (who luckily are personal friends) who told me how to do an internal, couldn't feel anything yet, so I guess it's just a waiting game.

I've had dogs in the past, but DOGS, never bitches & I've never whelped a pup in me life.

Help & hand-holds would be lovely.

This is the loveliest thing to wake up to.
clever Mabli, finding you and your daughter.
Now THAT is a dog story that you will tell over and over and over again like we tell of our little chap being rescued from a bird cage in a shop window in Beirut!

W00woo · 21/10/2014 06:36

What a lovely story. I can't wait to hear an update.

nooka · 21/10/2014 06:41

Sorry Hound, my mum lives near Ewyas Harold. A very pretty part of the world. We on the other hand live in Canada :)

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 06:46

Norks, it is & she is, she is however, at the moment, having a lovely kip, DH just bobbed down to see how it was going & we agreed that I would snooze & keep an eye on things & he will get the DCs ready for school. IT'S LIKE HAVING ANOTHER BABY, without knowing how many are coming & from whence they came. It's also blowing a gale in this part of Wales & the power keeps flickering on & off.

Nook - Ewyas Harold is very near us - do they want a pup in about 12 weeks?

I am the other side of Herefordshire and waving and cheering you on :)

singlespeedlass · 21/10/2014 07:05

Oh wow what a lovely story. My sister has a lurcher (whippet x poodle) and I have been coveting one for quite some time!

Would love to see photos of cute newborn pups, and might even be interested in rehoming one (am in windy Cumbria).

Good luck to you all over the coming hours x

She looks so lovely. How's she doing?

BellMcEnd · 21/10/2014 07:07

I LOVE this thread! I really believe that animals come to those who they know will want them . I've had so many waifs and strays over the years Smile. Best of luck for today, I'll be checking in far too much regularly. Big kiss to Mabili

Mabli is beautiful. also is Queen Mab the fairy's midwife?

Good luck for midwifing duties today.

Eastpoint · 21/10/2014 07:15

Shamelessly joining thread to hear what happens next. How lovely for her to have found the right home.

plinkyplonks · 21/10/2014 07:20

Awww :) She is an absolutely beautiful dog :) Best of luck HoundoftheBaskervilles - doggie is very lucky to have found you :)

BigcatLittlecat · 21/10/2014 07:22

Valleys girl here cheering Mabli on! I'm in tears at this thread and I've got to go to work!

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 07:23

Just spoken to one of the vets, one of the other partners passes by here on his way to work so is going to look in in about an hour as, despite the show whilst we where there last night, he doesn't think she's whelping yet, & I agree. She's quite relaxed & having a snooze. I have had a sleepless night for nothing I think. Bugger, I think she's pulled a fast one on me & I may now have to stay awake for another 24 hours. Pro-plus anyone?

You're a hero Smile

She's a lovely dog, what a gorgeous coat - all shiny.

I so glad she found you.

BellaVita · 21/10/2014 07:31

What a lovely thread Grin

BehindLockNumberNine · 21/10/2014 07:38

Ooh, how exciting! Another huge lurcher fan here. We have an indeterminate Whippet cross. Current thinking is Whippet X Fennec fox ot Whippet X bat on avvount of his ridiculous ears, no one at the rescue centre was able to hazard a guess!
Good luck with Morty, she is a lucky girl to have ended up with you . Thanks

confusedandemployed · 21/10/2014 07:39

Oh how lovely! Pontardawe resident welling up here. I have a friend with a little girl called Mabli I think it's a lovely name.
I hope she's doing well, she's a beautiful girl :-)

moosemama · 21/10/2014 07:51

Oh how exciting - what lovely, lovely person you are to take her in and support her through having her pups. Flowers

I have two Lurchers myself and I'd say she looks like a bull lurcher, probably a staff cross. They are the most people orientated, sweet natured Lurchers ever.

I'd recommend contacting some reputable sighthound/Lurcher rescues to help you rehome the pups, as they will be able to homecheck and give rescue back-up to any potential puppy parents.

You're pretty near Evesham Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue ( Facebook page here ). I'd contact them for advice if I were you, as they are very experienced re whelping, raising and homing Lurcher pups and will be able to give you lots of advice and support. They work nationally, so distance shouldn't be an issue.

daisydotandgertie · 21/10/2014 07:52

No - she's not about to have her puppies. Panting is usually constant and digging starts.

Do you need info on what you should have available? Have you got a hot box ready? Towels? Sterilised scissors? Stuff? Where are you going to keep them when they're here? They'll need a heat pad of some sort too; a hot water bottle will do.

Gunpowder · 21/10/2014 07:54

I used to pray for a litter of puppies to turn up on my doorstep. (I think too much Dodie Smith.) Never happened. Envy Think DM was relieved.

LoveVintage · 21/10/2014 07:58

What a beautiful girl she is, reading this has made me feel quite teary too. Looking forward to your updates.

Chandon · 21/10/2014 07:58

What a fab person you are.

Lucky lucky girl she is.

This makes me feel all tearful

Good luck!
