Help - a Lovely but heavily pregnant Lurcher turned up at my door today

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 03:38

I know it's late & I know there's a thread for pointy hound lovers, but I seem to have acquired a heavily pregnant Lurcher, she was lurking round my house all day - very rural no near neighbours, every time I looked out the door she was there, very underfed but sweet & extremely sociable, after about three hours I crumbled & fed her, at which point I noticed she was HEAVILY pregnant & rather skinny.

I've taken her to the Vets', no chip, no report, so she's come back here, she had a show of mucus at the vets' and has been intermittently been panting very heavily, I've phoned the vet again (who luckily are personal friends) who told me how to do an internal, couldn't feel anything yet, so I guess it's just a waiting game.

I've had dogs in the past, but DOGS, never bitches & I've never whelped a pup in me life.

Help & hand-holds would be lovely.

Is he 12 weeks now? I've been following Mabli etc on Facebook. The puppies were all lovely looking & Mungo is gorgeous.

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 28/01/2015 11:05

Yep, 12 weeks, my hands are covered in small puncture wounds.....

Mungo pics Grin All Mabli's pups were gorgeous, but he is a handsome fellow!

My dog is an all sorts. Every now and then we think about doing a genetic test to see what genes are in him. When we got him from rescue they couldn't give us any idea how big he was and were debating whether his dad was a terrier or a Rottweiler! I think he must have some hound in there somewhere as he is a speed about and sleep a lot type :)

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 12/02/2015 20:37

Mungo update, one of the Pup's new owners sent off for a DNA test to determine exactly from whence Mungs & his litter came, it turns out Mabs was a Grey x English Bully and the sire was a Saluki X Grey.

Which is probably why Mungo's legs are growing so long...

At 14 weeks he's just starting to calm down and is generally a delightful little hound and even DH, who was initially resistant, has really fallen for this long-legged shark. (Although he's currently cursing the Lego-eating fool).

Interesting. You could tell Mabli was a Bull Lurcher and before I reached your most recent post I was thinking the pups must have been crossed back to a Grey or Grey mix, as Mungo looks a lot more pointy than his mum. His ears remind me of my older lad's as a pup and he's a quarter Saluki too. Smile

My dh was determined not to fall for our pup - fast forward 18 months and the two of them are inseparable, with dh being completely soft and a real pushover with him.

Give Mungo an ear ruffle from me - he's such a cutie! Grin

What a gorgeous boy Mungo is.

Just looked on the website, and Mabs is still awaiting adoption though. Hope she finds a home soon.

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 12/02/2015 21:21

He is a complete cutie, he currently has his entire body levered in behind DH, with his nose in DH'S collar.

He's one of the pointier pups, some of them are much more Bully, the brindles seem to be the bigger pups, quite tall but stocky, and a couple of the blacks, Mungs included, seem to have more of the Grey, I'm looking forward to a reunion at some point to see them all together, it will be very interesting to see how they've all turned out, they all seem so different already.

Mungs is a dream, very biddable (that'll be the Bully and the Grey - less of the Saluki there - but FAST and I suspect a future incorrigible food-thief), recall is fantastic & he's coming on brilliantly in all other areas. I did, as with all puppy owners, go through a phase a couple of weeks ago when I was thinking 'What the hell have I done? I can't do this, it's too hard', buuuut, as if by magic, Mungs just calmed down (as they always do) and is already a much loved member of the family.

Dogs have a way, don't they, of making you fall in love with them. It's been ten years since I had a dog, I'd really forgotten how much they completely become a part of the family (even the cats are grudgingly accepting him after a period of readjustment).

I tried to give him an ear ruffle Moose, but as his head is wedged firmly behind DH it was more of a squidge.

And yes, Mabs is still looking for a home, I think a friend of a friend may be interested (fingers crossed) - BUT, if anyones interested, please look at Hounds First and contact Rachel, that girl deserves a wonderful home.

I'd love a nice sensible girly to go with my two boys and Mabli would be perfect. They need a girl to keep them in check. Sadly there's just no room in our house for any more.

I've always had three dogs historically, but usually two medium/small and one larger. Pip was supposed to be Whippet sized - ah yes, that will be the 28" tall Whippets then will it? Hmm Grin

If I win the lottery and get my dream house anytime soon I'll be straight to Hounds First to offer her a home.

My ds is currently putting off going to bed because Pip's curled himself around his feet and he doesn't want to wake him - this is the pup he insisted he wouldn't/couldn't bond with. Wink

nooka · 15/02/2015 03:34

They all seem to have the best ears, and your Mungo is no exception :) Lovely leggy pup. Reunion picture would be fantastic!

I've occasionally thought about getting our dog DNA tested as the only thing we know is that his mum was apparently an American Water Spaniel but he looks nothing like one of those!

Adarajames · 15/02/2015 03:38

Awwww Smile

Just be prepared for his recall to totally disappear just as he hits teenage and you thought you had it sorted! Little sods they are! Grin

Letsgoforawalk · 30/04/2015 22:03

Just seen on fb that Mabli, the original pregnant Lurcher in this thread, has been adopted by her forever family. Well done to all involved in getting this dog and her pups the care she needed.
Grin

Bassetfeet · 01/05/2015 17:39

So lovely to see that Mabli has her new family and forever home .
I have followed her story on Facebook with great joy and admiration for those who fostered her and saw her puppies grow healthily with such love and care .....to the lady who found her and took her in.
How they have grown ! And those legs that go on forever . Those ears !
Adorable . Glad that HoundoftheBaskervilles has Mungo . [smile}

Old post from years ago..... These lurchers will be adults now!

ferneytorro · 14/10/2021 12:55

I think the last post was a mistake but, thank you for that mistake as it allowed me to ready this absolutely adorable thread. Even better that it existed before Covid was a thing!

2catsandhappy · 14/10/2021 13:24
