Help - a Lovely but heavily pregnant Lurcher turned up at my door today

I know it's late & I know there's a thread for pointy hound lovers, but I seem to have acquired a heavily pregnant Lurcher, she was lurking round my house all day - very rural no near neighbours, every time I looked out the door she was there, very underfed but sweet & extremely sociable, after about three hours I crumbled & fed her, at which point I noticed she was HEAVILY pregnant & rather skinny.

I've taken her to the Vets', no chip, no report, so she's come back here, she had a show of mucus at the vets' and has been intermittently been panting very heavily, I've phoned the vet again (who luckily are personal friends) who told me how to do an internal, couldn't feel anything yet, so I guess it's just a waiting game.

I've had dogs in the past, but DOGS, never bitches & I've never whelped a pup in me life.

Help & hand-holds would be lovely.

Good luck little lurcher!
What are you calling her? (something to while away the hours!)

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 05:02

Well I can report, that she has, typically, in common with all creatures that are expected to perform to order, has fallen in to a deep sleep. On the bright side, I have been able to open the pantry door, & the cats have crept out to hide elsewhere.

Zum, we thought Morty (she's black, it's nearly Halloween - so Morticia - Morty - or I did), the other offers were - Bella (my Daughter's BFF at school) or Cerberus because DH fancies himself as a classicist - irrespective of three heads or not.. suggestions welcome. Please.

I'm up feeding the lo! And my name suggestion for one of thr pups is Pogo.

I would call her Solo

ArsenicChaseScream · 21/10/2014 05:14

Perdita - lost/shakespeare/101 dalmatians again Smile

ArsenicChaseScream · 21/10/2014 05:19

" finds an abandoned liverspotted Dalmatian in the middle of the road in the pouring rain. She has the dog treated by a vet and names her Perdita ("lost"). Perdita later tells Pongo about her lost love and the circumstances that led to her abandonment."

NormaStanleyFletcher · 21/10/2014 05:20

I think Morty is a great idea.

ArsenicChaseScream · 21/10/2014 05:22

You might be needing a lot of names.....

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 05:25

Perdita & Pogo - I loved that book as a child, I may well go with that - I'm very excited to see how many pups & what the chuff they'll look like as I have no idea what dog got near this bitch, according to the vet, she's very young (2ish) & this is her first litter. But she is so good - she just dragged me out to the loo again (twice), so obviously house trained.

Cerberus sounds fantastic but is I think male. There is Meara? dd suggests Lupa (the mother of Romulus and Remus). Or Okami (means Wolf in Japanese).

Maybe a hunting goddess like Artemis or Callisto? Or something more homely like Vesta (goddess of home and hearth)

Or a spice like Anise (liquorice taste)?

I was looking for the name of Bran's dog (Arthurian, not GOT) and looking at a list of Welsh names, and thought maybe Mabli (means lovable)?

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 05:31

Nooka - Did you know we were Welsh?

OP posts:
HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 05:32

Mabli - love it.

OP posts:
HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 05:34

Mabli it is I think - well thought Nooka.

No, I didn't :) but you are in border country if you are in Herefordshire so I thought it might work (my mum lives in Herefordshire, right on the border).

nooka · 21/10/2014 05:36

Fabulous! I don't think I've ever had anyone pick my suggestion before Grin. It does sound like a good dog sort of name.

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 05:38

Mab for shorts - brilliant - Thank You (I am not Welsh - My husband & children are - they will thank me for that - I'm Yorkshire to the bone).

Where does your mum live? We're on the border too.

My husband is deep Valleys, the children were born in Abergavenny & Hay.

Good luck Mabli! She clearly found her way to the right house.
What is your DD going to wish for next?!
I've got no idea what happens with puppies but am wondering if you need to boil pots of water and rip up sheets like an olden days home birth?

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 05:48

Anyway, the bitch in question is fast asleep, there will be non pups tonight, tomorrow probably after I have stayed awake all night.

ArsenicChaseScream · 21/10/2014 05:50

Any chance of some sleep now?

catwithflowers · 21/10/2014 05:52

Very exciting. Hope everything goes smoothly. What will you call her and the pups you keep? Grin

catwithflowers · 21/10/2014 05:54

Sorry, I see the name thing is covered!

Kitsmummy · 21/10/2014 06:08

Oh wow, I'm so place marking this one! Good luck mabli (we know a little girl with mabli as a middle name, it's lovely but I've always wondered the origin of it, I know now!)

HowsTheSerenity · 21/10/2014 06:25

Ooh puppies! You're going to be a grandmother Grin.
