Help - a Lovely but heavily pregnant Lurcher turned up at my door today

I know it's late & I know there's a thread for pointy hound lovers, but I seem to have acquired a heavily pregnant Lurcher, she was lurking round my house all day - very rural no near neighbours, every time I looked out the door she was there, very underfed but sweet & extremely sociable, after about three hours I crumbled & fed her, at which point I noticed she was HEAVILY pregnant & rather skinny.

I've taken her to the Vets', no chip, no report, so she's come back here, she had a show of mucus at the vets' and has been intermittently been panting very heavily, I've phoned the vet again (who luckily are personal friends) who told me how to do an internal, couldn't feel anything yet, so I guess it's just a waiting game.

I've had dogs in the past, but DOGS, never bitches & I've never whelped a pup in me life.

Help & hand-holds would be lovely.

Moose, I thought she looked like a bull Lurcher, very muscular face/staff cross, I'll contact the Evesham rescue - cheers for that. (She is INCREDIBLY sweet natured).

Still dibbling about - waiting for the vet.

Ask your vet friends advice on what to do once they're born. If mum is undernourished she might not have enough milk and you could end up having to hand rear.
Either way Mum will need lots of high energy food (puppy food). She'll be at risk of low calcium levels particularly a couple of weeks in when the pups are feeding well.
Good luck Smile

I tried very hard to get my mother to adopt a houndy sort of dog when she was looking for a new dog a year or two ago but she was persuaded that a small breed pup was the right way to go (she is elderly and quite frail and was worried a big dog wodul pull her over). I thought an older hound would be great, beautiful racing about followed by cuddly sleep. Ideal. Ah well, she now has a badly behaved miniature schnauzer (who she loves). I'd love a hound to go with our all sorts dog, but one is enough for us now, plus here most of the rescue dogs are much heavier breeds, where I'd like something with a bit of whippet in it, all bendy and lovely.

Don't think I've ever been so invested in a live birth thread!

Bowlersarm · 21/10/2014 08:06

She's gorgeous. Good luck!

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 08:06

I have heat pads Daisy, towels & a crate/box, I have a nice quiet room where I'm hoping she'll settle, I can keep it clear for the duration until we find homes for them all - I think I've got it covered - although am a novice - am taking advice as it goes, so am happy to listen to anything you have to say.

I would contact EGLR - they are very experienced with puppies (my pup was born to a mum who was found stray 2 days before the litter was born).
Maybe it would be best if she could go to one of their foster homes (I think Pip usually has the mums and pups) to have the litter and for their babyhood, then come back to you if you are still willing afterwards. It could be really hard work with the pups as if she is very thin it might not be possible for them to keep feeding from her.

jellybeanlover · 21/10/2014 08:12

I'm glad she found you Flowers

Gileswithachainsaw · 21/10/2014 08:15

What a kindhearted person you are. If only all people were like that. Thank heavens she found you. I hope everything goes ok with the puppies. Poor poor baby being dumped like that it's cold and wet now and anything could have happened to her and/or pups.

Some people shouldn't be allowed oxygen.

Brew for you. It's strong don't worry

MairzyDoats · 21/10/2014 08:18

Marking my place on this thread, what a gorgeous story. Hope all goes well and there are some healthy pups in the next few hours.

TinyPawz · 21/10/2014 08:23

marking place for puppy pics

Itsfab · 21/10/2014 08:24

Damn, we have the dentist so can't puppy watch but I wish you all luck.

Sandthorn · 21/10/2014 08:25

What a lucky girl, to find her way to your family. Sniffle.

Definitely get in touch with local dog rescue places, as you'll need some expert advice when it comes to socialising and rehoming the pups. The early weeks of their lives are really important to make sure they turn out confident and well-balanced pets later.

Good luck and keep us posted. Grin

kelper · 21/10/2014 08:25

Aw what a lovely thread! So glad she found you OP.
Will have to steal the iPad from ds to look at piccies. I'd love a hound but Dh isn't keen :-/ hope all goes well (can't wait to see puppies!!)

Sandthorn · 21/10/2014 08:27

Ps. I agree that there's a touch of bull breed in there... There's something staffy about those eyes.

WannaBe · 21/10/2014 08:29

I do wonder how it is that a seemingly much loved family pet (from op's description seems she is well house trained/socialised) can suddenly just become an abandoned stray. Sad even if pregnant what on earth could induce someone to abandon their once desired dog? Sad

Hope that the birth etc goes well and you soon have lots of lovely puppies Envy Envy

I always wanted an animal that had babies when I was growing up - we had a dog that had puppies but I was away at boarding school and they were ready to be homed by the time I got back home Sad so I never got to be with them as tiny puppies. Sad and as an adult I am now far too responsible and have all my animals newtered, and besides if ever ended up with one with babies I'd feel so responsible for them I'd have to keep them all. Grin

Bakeoffcakes · 21/10/2014 08:34

Oh what a lovley woman you are Smile

Hope you get through today ok.

NewEraNewMindset · 21/10/2014 08:34

Lovely story, can't wait for pup pics Grin

SnakeyMcBadass · 21/10/2014 08:40

Love this thread

Floundering · 21/10/2014 08:49

You can't move her now she's settled :(

Lets hope Nice Passing Vet can offer lots of advice & we got some healthy pups out of mum so OP can start feeding her up & get her milk going.

DontDrinkAndFacebook · 21/10/2014 08:52

I think she looks like a Bull Lurcher as well, it was the part staffy look that was the first think I noticed when I saw the photo.

I have a lurcher as well and recently met a man from Evesham who was doing some work in my area. We got talking dogs as has a Saluki and he told me there were a lot of gypsies in the Evesham area who run puppy farms and breed lurcher puppies to sell, or to use for hunting and poaching. Is there a camp nearby that she could have wandered off from, or do you think she was just chucked out onto the street and they moved on without her?

My baby girl was one of eleven so I hope you are ready for this!

spiderlight · 21/10/2014 09:04

She's a clever girl to have picked you! How lovely - hello Mabli! Grin

Have you checked places like www.doglost.co.uk and www.petsbureau.co.uk/ in case someone's missing her?

mrslaughan · 21/10/2014 09:06

If you have to supplement pups feed, the triangular wedge make up sponges are apparently the best/easiest way to deliver the milk...I am sure your vet friend has lots of advice, but v good friend of mine who is a breeder uses these rather than bottles and nipples....apparently more effective.

you are a saint for taking her in....all a bit scary, but hopefully you will have a healthy and happy mummy and babies.
