Help - a Lovely but heavily pregnant Lurcher turned up at my door today

I know it's late & I know there's a thread for pointy hound lovers, but I seem to have acquired a heavily pregnant Lurcher, she was lurking round my house all day - very rural no near neighbours, every time I looked out the door she was there, very underfed but sweet & extremely sociable, after about three hours I crumbled & fed her, at which point I noticed she was HEAVILY pregnant & rather skinny.

I've taken her to the Vets', no chip, no report, so she's come back here, she had a show of mucus at the vets' and has been intermittently been panting very heavily, I've phoned the vet again (who luckily are personal friends) who told me how to do an internal, couldn't feel anything yet, so I guess it's just a waiting game.

I've had dogs in the past, but DOGS, never bitches & I've never whelped a pup in me life.

Help & hand-holds would be lovely.

Wildfig, I get far more attention for my blue and fawn lurcher pup than any scarf could generate Grin

OP is it worth seeing if there's a dog breeder locally that might be able to "mentor" you? They might be able to loan things like a whelping box too.

HaveToWearHeels · 21/10/2014 11:47

OM Gosh she is beautiful, you are doing an amazing thing. My eyes were leaking after the first couple of posts !

passmethevino · 21/10/2014 11:47

Shamelessly marking my place! Good luck, what a lovely lady you are Smile

Aw she's gorgeous :)

MeanwhileHighAboveTheField · 21/10/2014 12:00

Why does this never happen to me Grin

My friend and I hatched a plan once: her cat had kittens and I took one home and said I found it in the the street.

My very clever mum, told me that the kitten looked too young to be away from its mother, but how about I take it to my friends house and he cat would look after it...!

dailymadeit · 21/10/2014 13:08

Good luck - marking my place for the photos

This is a really good idea. Your vets or other vets in the area may know of breeders who could possibly lend you a proper whelping box. Failing that you can get disposable ones from Amazon.

Owllady · 21/10/2014 13:24

Oh good luck ::)

daisydotandgertie · 21/10/2014 13:30

Please avoid borrowing whelping equipment. Germs are lethal to vulnerable pups.

A cardboard one would be much better.

LetThereBeCupcakes · 21/10/2014 13:39

Sorry daisy didn't know that! OP ignore my idea of borrowing a box!

Ohmypants · 21/10/2014 13:40

hound given you mn name you were obviously destined to do this! So any news?

middlings · 21/10/2014 13:41

OP I have no interest in dogs (sorry) but just wanted to pop on to say I think you and you're family are fantastic and that Mabli is a very lucky dog to have found you all.

Good luck in the next 24 hours! Flowers

Definitely agree if it's anything like a wooden box however some boxes can be fully disinfected and they're much sturdier than the cardboard boxes. A lot of breeders swear by Parvo-Virucide for disinfecting whelping boxes.

GormlessNormTheGardenGnome · 21/10/2014 14:19

Mabli is really lucky to have found you. I hope you've managed to get some sleep.

I'm not place marking for puppy pics at all. Oh no, not me.
