Help - a Lovely but heavily pregnant Lurcher turned up at my door today

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 03:38

I know it's late & I know there's a thread for pointy hound lovers, but I seem to have acquired a heavily pregnant Lurcher, she was lurking round my house all day - very rural no near neighbours, every time I looked out the door she was there, very underfed but sweet & extremely sociable, after about three hours I crumbled & fed her, at which point I noticed she was HEAVILY pregnant & rather skinny.

I've taken her to the Vets', no chip, no report, so she's come back here, she had a show of mucus at the vets' and has been intermittently been panting very heavily, I've phoned the vet again (who luckily are personal friends) who told me how to do an internal, couldn't feel anything yet, so I guess it's just a waiting game.

I've had dogs in the past, but DOGS, never bitches & I've never whelped a pup in me life.

Help & hand-holds would be lovely.

This does highlight rather beautifully why rescues are on their knees, doesn't it? One unwanted dog quickly becomes a dozen sad

This :-(

I wish ignorant people and backyard breeders would give just one seconds thought to the 11 other homeless dogs that will no longer get the opportunity for a home. It's fabulous that Mabli has found an excellent rescue and her pups will be placed into good homes, but it's all so needless isnt' it? If only she had been spayed there wouldn't be even more pressure put onto the rescue system and the dogs already in it would have less chance of being put to sleep for being surplus to requirements.

MontserratCaballe · 01/11/2014 12:13

So lovely to see the puppies. Well done Mabli and foster parents.

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/11/2014 12:15

Completely agree dot Sad

One operation. One routine, usually quick and straight forward operation. And there would have been no need for any of this.

If that one op is something you can't afford then don't get one in the first place.

Mabli got lucky. She now has the best chance possible for her and her puppies to stay well. Others may not be so lucky and suffer fates we can't bring ourselves to even think about.

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/11/2014 12:18

All you kind people who have taken these animals in or found them places to go and shown these poor animals love and kindness even when there isn't anything you can do for them. You are all unsung heros imo.

rachmultiplemum · 01/11/2014 12:27

Totally agree dotdotdotmustdash.

As a result of this litter we have had to close doors to new intake until they are all homed. Don't get me wrong i am so pleased that they are in our care, however its so fustrating that poor Mabli has had to go through this.

UPDATE- We now have 11 pups. All fit and well and all feeding. Mabli only has 8 working teats so we are swapping pups around and also topping up with puppy milk.

We are going to get a vet out to check them all today and also check that Mabli hasn't got anymore in her.

Here is the Justgiving link for those that wanted it. Thank you so much for your support. www.justgiving.com/mabli

It's wonderful for Mabli, she's in caring company and having her pups in safety and her future and that of her pups is assured.

Imagine if 11 Mumsnetters were having their babies today? There would so many messages of celebration and congratulation - it would be a lovely day on the forum.

Then imagine that every time another baby was born a child in a care home was quietly led to the doctor's surgery and calmly euthanised. In the dog world, that's the reality when rescue pups are born

plinkyplonks · 01/11/2014 12:37

What a lovely FB post to wake up to this morning :) So pleased Mabli has finally had her puppies and well done to all those involved x

Itsfab · 01/11/2014 12:55

11!!

"Then imagine that every time another baby was born a child in a care home was quietly led to the doctor's surgery and calmly euthanised. In the dog world, that's the reality when rescue pups are born". Oh Dot although I'm in tears at this, it is so so true.

God bless Mabli and her darling babies. God damn people who allow this to happen.

Thank you to the Angels who work in rescue.

SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PETS!

moosemama · 01/11/2014 13:27

I had a suspicion it was going to be around the dozen mark, judging by the size and liveliness of her stomach. Poor Mabli. Sad

Well done you clever girl! Also a huge thank you to the wonderful people who took you in, saving both you and your babies and particularly those who are now on 24hr puppy duty. Flowers

I would dearly love a lovely little pointy girl to compliment my two scruffy rescue boys and have a feeling my younger lad would absolutely love another younger pup to play with, but have a feeling my dh may think otherwise. Sad Please don't tell me there are any black girlies with white chests and toes or dh may just find himself overruled! Grin

Greydog · 01/11/2014 13:29

Dot that's so sad and so true. Mabli is lucky that she has so many to care for her. There are some wonderful people out there.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 01/11/2014 13:48

11! Goodness.

DH wants one to go alongside our old collie.

Bassetfeet · 01/11/2014 14:54

Wow just wow!
They are so chunky and Mabli tired but serene . You people caring for her are a balm for a cynical soul . Kindness and compassion . You are all marvellous .

BuilderMammy · 01/11/2014 14:59

Are you sure she's not a dalmation? Confused

nooka · 01/11/2014 17:19

Goodness me! No wonder she was so enormous. I bet Hound is slightly relieved to have handed them over to the very experienced Leanne and Andrew! It sounds amazing but I bet it has been and will be a huge amount of work.

They do all look lovely, I hope that Mabli feels better for them being out and isn't too exhausted by all the feeding. I would not have liked to breastfeed eleven babies, even with six extra nipples!!

spiderlight · 01/11/2014 17:28

I've just been counting pups on FB - well done Mabli! No wonder she was so ginormous! Soooo OP, which one do you fancy? Grin

rachmultiplemum · 01/11/2014 18:16

So gorgeous

R4roger · 01/11/2014 18:19

absolutely gorgeous Thanks

Bowlersarm · 01/11/2014 18:19

Gorgeous......and tired! Bless her.

R4roger · 01/11/2014 18:20

What a lot of work for her and her foster carers though Shock

livelablove · 01/11/2014 18:39

Aw she is cuddling her babies Smile I wish I could adopt one of them, lovely puppies.

MsIngaFewmarbles · 01/11/2014 19:07

Just read this whole thread. Had quite a few little sniffles. Well done OP, Spicy, Mabli and the fab foster carers. Also how kind of all the donators Smile
