Help - a Lovely but heavily pregnant Lurcher turned up at my door today

I know it's late & I know there's a thread for pointy hound lovers, but I seem to have acquired a heavily pregnant Lurcher, she was lurking round my house all day - very rural no near neighbours, every time I looked out the door she was there, very underfed but sweet & extremely sociable, after about three hours I crumbled & fed her, at which point I noticed she was HEAVILY pregnant & rather skinny.

I've taken her to the Vets', no chip, no report, so she's come back here, she had a show of mucus at the vets' and has been intermittently been panting very heavily, I've phoned the vet again (who luckily are personal friends) who told me how to do an internal, couldn't feel anything yet, so I guess it's just a waiting game.

I've had dogs in the past, but DOGS, never bitches & I've never whelped a pup in me life.

Help & hand-holds would be lovely.

Hi Ender- We have made some enquiries in the local area with Dog wardens , rescues etc, but have decided not to post her on doglost due to the risk of someone who is not her owner trying to claim her. I have worked with doglost previously though as a coordinator so have made all the coords aware.

She is not microchipped, she isn't house trained, didn't know what the TV is etc so hasnt lived in a house before. We feel that she is an ex travellers dog. She hasn't got any working scars, but her behaviour (being friendly and adoring children) combined with her lack of house experience makes us think that.

Sadly stray pregnant lurchers are pretty common- stray lurchers are very common. Chances are that either she has been mated with something that wont sell (in wales you will struggle to get £30 for a bull lurcher pup), or they are expecting complications (so therefore a big vet bill) or they just couldnt be bothered with her.

Sadly it happens all the time x

Thanks Rachel, that makes sense. Will stop worrying there's a lovely family desperately trying to find her.

EasyToEatTiger · 28/10/2014 18:16

www.facebook.com/HoundsFirstSighthoundRescue?ref=stream&fref=nf She is in the best possible hands. I too hope she is keeping well.

HarrietSchulenberg · 28/10/2014 18:20

Stanley, the rescue lurcher Hound of the Schulenbergs, came from a similar background we think. He's flat on his back on the sofa atm but if was awake he'd probably send a sniff and a lick to Mabli and tell her that Houses with People are great.

Millipedewithherfeetup · 29/10/2014 00:31

Thankyou rach.

AsBrightAsAJewel · 29/10/2014 11:59

Hope Mabli got on OK at the vets. Poor little love, almost there and praying today's the day and all goes well.

rachmultiplemum · 29/10/2014 12:14

Mabli vet trip update- Mabli has been checked out again. Whelping isn't imminent but should be in the next few days. Pups are large but not too large and none are in silly positions. The vet is very happy with both Mum and pups and we now just have to wait.

ophiotaurus · 29/10/2014 12:31

That's good news! Hopefully everything goes to plan.

ender · 29/10/2014 12:32

So pleased to read this, hope things continue to be OK. Mabil could do without having to recover from a section with pups to look after.

moosemama · 29/10/2014 14:25

Thank you for keeping us updated.

Good to hear everything is progressing nicely for the lovely Mabli.

NEScribe · 29/10/2014 18:25

Can't wait to hear she has given birth! What a trial for her - especially with the new surroundings etc.

We have a beautiful rescue lurcher and she is SO friendly - too friendly for her own good. We have a 6ft high wall but she is obsessed with kites and if she sees one, she's off.
Almost lost her last week - she jumped the wall (presumably after a kite) and I didn't notice for a few minutes.
Hubby went to look for her on the hill (adjoins our garden) with our Bosnian rescue dog, a beautiful 2-yr-old who had the worst start to life possible.
As he passed a moving car on the road outside the house, our dog turned and looked at the vehicle which is unusual and hubby then spotted our beautiful Mollie in the back on a makeshift rope lead.
Managed to yell loud enough for driver to hear and he stopped and let her out. Such a scare!! If it hadn't been for our other dog, he wouldn't have seen her.
We originally thought our lurcher had been thrown out of a previous home but now think it's likely she just got out and wandered off and got picked up by dog warden. Sad to think there could be a family somewhere not knowing what became of her :(
But she wasn't chipped (that was the first thing we did!) and no way of finding out.
I just hope Mabli really isn't a much loved but lost doggie :(

*If anyone has any tips on preventing a kite-crazy dog from chasing the damned things, I would be very grateful. We are not allowed to make the wall any higher than 6ft and she jumps over with no problem.

NEScribe · 29/10/2014 18:33

And, since there are so many animal lovers on here, you might want to check out the Bosnian rescue group who saved our little beauty and transported her to the UK with 12 others to forever homes :)

It's AWAB Bosnia (org not .com) and they do wonderful work in the face of terrible odds. Most volunteers are not well-off and at the moment they are saving as many streets dogs as possible in Sarajevo.
The government has re-introduced a "bounty" paid to evil people who kill street dogs. They are not put to sleep humanely and are usually killed in the most appalling ways. AWAB tries to get to the dogs first and is constantly fundraising to keep them in pension (dog home) until they can be found new homes elsewhere in Europe and beyond. There is a UK FB page where we swap adoption stories, spread the word and auction stuff to raise money. At the moment, funds are urgently needed to make one of the few pensions watertight for winter - snow has arrived and the roof leaks and some dogs don't even have blankets :(

If anyone is seriously looking for a new doggie, then they have some beautiful dogs and pups looking for a new start in life.
Some are older, gentle and placid - some, like our pup, had a bad start in life. she is terrified of strangers and it was weeks before she would come in the same room as us - but it was sooo worth it. She is super bright and is now extremely loving :)
Oh - and let's not forget - we would have lost our beautiful lurcher is she hadn't been here to spot her being driven off by a stranger.

rachmultiplemum · 29/10/2014 22:20

Mablis temperature has dropped so we are hoping that these pups will appear within the next 24 hours

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/10/2014 22:21

Oh god look at her, poor baby. I hope it happens soon for her. Good luck mabli.

BettyOff · 29/10/2014 22:28

Poor thing. Best of luck to you all and the fantastic job you're doing. Fingers crossed for happy news of a safe Mabli and pups in the morning (or a quiet night and morning whelping so some sleep is had).

Wolfiefan · 29/10/2014 22:31

Good luck Mabli. This thread makes me want to thank everyone who rescues animals and make DH say yes to lots more pets!

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 30/10/2014 01:22

Oh, she looks so uncomfortable. Hope the pups arrive soon.

Plonkysaurus · 30/10/2014 07:21

Hope it's not long for Mabli now. She looks how I felt 10 days over. Can't wait to see the pups and hope they arrive safe and sound.

NanooCov · 30/10/2014 14:55

I am spending far too much time refreshing this thread but just can't resist it! I'm only have one human baby on board so can only imagine how uncomfortable she is. Hoping for puppy news soon. I got an email from Amazon to say the puppy weaning bowl I ordered from the Wish List has been delivered today so very pleased it has arrived for when they're here and get a little bigger. I'm hoping for Mabli's sake there's no more than a handful!

AimlesslyPurposeful · 30/10/2014 15:17

Oh poor thing. Must be feeling ready to pop.

Hope all goes well for her and the pups.

Thank you for keeping us updated Rach.

AimlesslyPurposeful · 30/10/2014 20:24

Any news?

rachmultiplemum · 30/10/2014 21:35
