Help - a Lovely but heavily pregnant Lurcher turned up at my door today

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 21/10/2014 03:38

I know it's late & I know there's a thread for pointy hound lovers, but I seem to have acquired a heavily pregnant Lurcher, she was lurking round my house all day - very rural no near neighbours, every time I looked out the door she was there, very underfed but sweet & extremely sociable, after about three hours I crumbled & fed her, at which point I noticed she was HEAVILY pregnant & rather skinny.

I've taken her to the Vets', no chip, no report, so she's come back here, she had a show of mucus at the vets' and has been intermittently been panting very heavily, I've phoned the vet again (who luckily are personal friends) who told me how to do an internal, couldn't feel anything yet, so I guess it's just a waiting game.

I've had dogs in the past, but DOGS, never bitches & I've never whelped a pup in me life.

Help & hand-holds would be lovely.

Poor wee thing, it's uncomfortable enough with one, never mind a full litter! I've got everything crossed for her and her amazing foster family.

Crumblevision · 27/10/2014 20:50

Oh poor Mabli, she looks unamused by the whole thing! Wonder how many pups she has wriggling around in there?!

rachmultiplemum · 27/10/2014 21:06

I have just posted a video of Mabli on the Hounds first Sighthound rescue facebook page. She is not a happy bunny

Mama1980 · 27/10/2014 21:07

What a heart warming thread, well done Hounds Thanks and everyone else involved.
Have my fingers crossed everything goes well for Mabli.
I have a beautiful lurcher x, she was from a accidental rescue litter She is 3 now and the most beautiful gentle dog in the world.

HoundoftheBaskervilles · 27/10/2014 21:33

Just saw the video Rachel, poor Mabs, she looks knackered and horribly uncomfortable, I really hope it happens soon for her, she looks enormous. I would like to think that this whole thread, lovely though it is, may serve to highlight the fact that there are some twattish dog owners out there that don't do right by their animals and leave good people like the volunteers at Hounds First and the goodness of everyone that's contributed to pick up the pieces (and not forgetting Mabs who's at the moment not a happy dog at all), and she's one of the very lucky ones.

Sorry for the rant, just seeing her like that and knowing the shit that chucked her out would have been quite happy for her to go through that in a barn or a bush or God knows where, all by herself makes me so angry.

Anyway, peace and best of love to her.

Good look Mabs.

Is she a Lurcher cross?

rachmultiplemum · 27/10/2014 22:09

Hi itsfab yes she is a lurcher ( a lurcher is a Sighthound crossed with another breed or breeds, normally working breeds). She is what we would call a bull lurcher as she has a bully breed in her too. So possibly greyhound x staff x something else x

nooka · 28/10/2014 01:06

Strikes me also as a story to tell/show people who sometimes post about how lovely it would be for their bitch to have pups. Seeing poor Mabli struggling with late stage pregnancy and the work that her foster mum is having to put in with many late nights before the puppies have even arrived might be a really good illustration as to why it's much better to spay/neuter your dog.

I do hope things go well for her, and that the puppies are born without any major trauma.

CatWitch · 28/10/2014 01:15

Awww, poor girl! I remember those last, uncomfortable hours well and I was only birthing one pup! Hugs to all you wonderful people caring for her and her babies..xx

rachmultiplemum · 28/10/2014 04:00

Hi Nooka- we are hoping that our updates and video etc are doing just that. We keep explaining to people that no, nothing is wrong, this is all normal- it is horrible for the dogs x

Imnotaslimjim · 28/10/2014 08:55

Aw poor thing, she looks so uncomfortable. Fingers crossed its over soon for her

Itsfab · 28/10/2014 09:08

Thanks rachmultiplemum.

Hope all is going well and Mabli is a proud mummy.

EasyToEatTiger · 28/10/2014 10:30

It looks like they're on their way!!!! Hope it all goes well!

rachmultiplemum · 28/10/2014 11:13

Beached Whale?

ender · 28/10/2014 11:29

She looks weirdly comfortable in that position Smile.
Could the vet tell if she'd had pups before?

Izzy24 · 28/10/2014 11:37

Have checked this thread soooo many times!!! Good luck Mabli!

Boysandme · 28/10/2014 12:03

So have I Izzy!! I even ended up liking the page on facebook so I won't miss it!

AcrossthePond55 · 28/10/2014 12:11

Oh bless her. Come on puppies!

moosemama · 28/10/2014 12:36

Good luck Mabli, not long now sweetheart.

Just watched the videos of her on FB. She's such a happy girl, despite the discomfort she's obviously in. Amazing photo of the pups moving around too. Smile

Had to post, as the thread had dropped of my list and I must check it at least a hundred times a day when not checking the FB page. Blush Grin

LoathsomeDrab · 28/10/2014 13:13

I think I'm checking this thread/FB too much, I had a dream about her last night Blush

VenusRising · 28/10/2014 13:37

Good lick Mabli!
And well done hounds, and rachmultiplemum

VenusRising · 28/10/2014 13:37

Luck!! But it might be correct too!

Millipedewithherfeetup · 28/10/2014 16:37

Just checking in too ! I don't have facebook can anyone copy the video to here ? Would love to see. Tia.

SnakeyMcBadass · 28/10/2014 16:50

Hope Mabs is progressing nicely. I'm strangely worried about her.

ender · 28/10/2014 17:24

Rachel - Mabli seems such a lovely dog. She seems to trust people, perhaps she wasn't ill treated/chucked out. Wouldn't nasty owners want to keep pregnant dog in order to try to sell pups?
Maybe she has caring owners and got herself lost.
I've heard of dogs disappearing when car stops at petrol station on a long journey so owners might live far from where she was found.
Would it be worth posting on DogLost?
