The trailer has just been released and I can’t wait!

It’s probably my favourite programme atm so it’s a shame it’s ending but I’d rather that than it getting repetitive and dragged out.

Great episode. The NPR summary is really good saying we really see the kids for who they are here.

I think their mum is in the funeral episodes.

I think Kendall's kids are adopted and not white? But.not sure.

I assume the deal goes through because in the titles you see a streaming device called "StarGo" - does that mean the Roy's come out on top?

No, that is an existing app. It is rubbish as demonstrated when either Roman or Mattson pissed on Roman's phone because it was endlessly buffering as it is in the opening scenes.

tribpot · 16/05/2023 08:28

Yes, it was intriguing that she was really unable to come up with a convincing lie, she has bought into her own myth as 'the smart one' and it's now clear that Matsson has been playing on that too, otherwise why grass her up to Greg?

Kendall also seemed very out of his depth in this episode, and unable to articulate (despite Rava telling him) what is so wrong with Mencken. I don't get why Roman was making such a big play of 'we'll be in the West Wing' - a media family with that profile is basically always going to have influence in the West Wing regardless. Disturbingly it seems as if Roman is a Mencken true believer, beyond seeing him for his usefulness to the deal.

Connor of course veering from vaguely statesman-like in his concession speech to out-and-out lunatic, so well played by Alan Ruck.

The wasabi scene was perfection, a moment of absolute surreal comedy in an otherwise dark, dark night. It must have been a pain to shoot with the poor guy having to get dried off between every take.

Next week is the funeral, and then surely to god they either do or don't do the Gojo deal in the final! Or maybe they'll get bored of that too and just go on to the next thing.

Existing Waystar app.

He looked as though mentally he was in a very dark place.

Roman almost seemed human in the first few episodes. Now he is becoming even more of a bastard. Note he has dumped the cosy cable knit!

MarshaBradyo · 16/05/2023 08:42

Kendall was in a fug until the Shiv scene

Out of it

escapingthecity · 16/05/2023 10:02

I don't think Kendall has ever been as into politics as his siblings - he crashed into trying to make a deal with Nate in a really unsubtle way. He prefers business and doesn't know how to navigate politics, which is why he looked so out of his depth, even without the personal complication with his kids.

Shiv should have stayed in politics, maybe even stood for election herself, rather than let her need for Logan's approval pull her back into RoyCo.

So excited for the funeral next week - I hope it's almost entirely set in and around the church, like this week's in the newsroom. Succession is always at its best when in a confined space.

slamfightbrightlight · 16/05/2023 10:15

I don’t think Roman is a Mencken true believer, he’s more his father’s son than the others and a Republican in the White House suits the family’s business interests more. He is without conscience in contrast to Shiv who was always had a political if not personal moral conscience and Kendall who seems to be finally finding his.

greennotepad · 16/05/2023 10:19

I think there is something significant in how they all keep underestimating Greg, and writing him off as a bumbling idiot- and yet he still keeps rising to the top. In this episode particularly- Tom making him be his coffee boy, Shiv giving him weak threats (she should have just offered to bring him in, but she doesn't see him as a serious person) when in the end he held all the cards, both in terms of the Shiv info and also the scene with Jess where he talked about the enormity of delivering his message.

Out of all the characters he's the only one who has changed really since the start- they've all always been bad people but he started off gentle and earnest and over time has wound up as awful as the rest of them because he's been pulled into their world. I don't know if Greg will be the one to take the crown (I don't know if I believe any of them will take the crown) but I think that he shouldn't be underestimated.

slamfightbrightlight · 16/05/2023 10:19

Also they deliberately kept sending Roman to get his hands dirty with Mencken - now that Roman is the one with Mencken’s ear I think Kendall is realising his mistake at trying to keep some distance.

Roman can play dirty like Logan but Kendall seems to fuck it up whenever he tries - like the expose about the cruises it seems to always come to nothing. Roman’s only problem is that privately he does beat himself up about his actions but publicly he’s better at not showing his feelings.

slamfightbrightlight · 16/05/2023 10:20

I’m not sure Greg was ever earnest or gentle - he was sent to New York to grift!

slamfightbrightlight · 16/05/2023 10:21

He was very funny talking about his night out with Mattson though

Compared to the rest of them, I mean.

I suppose the bar is pretty low, comparatively 😁

greennotepad · 16/05/2023 10:25

Greg is also the only one who has paid his dues in any sort of way- yes he's obviously made his way up the ranks due to his family connections, but he's the only person out of any of them who has actually ever got his hands dirty for Waystar. I think that Logan liked him and there will be some significance to him having written his name down (which again, they all laughed off as some sort of improbable joke).

Yes, drinks that weren't drinks, what did that mean?

IClaudine · 16/05/2023 10:36

Oops, sorry. Not sure what happened there!

slamfightbrightlight · 16/05/2023 10:37

I assumed he meant piss!

LadyWhineglass · 16/05/2023 11:35

I have a theory. But it isn’t good. And I’m so convinced that this is what is going to happen I am not going to write it down here. Just in case it does. And I think it will. Yup. Yup? Yeah. Sure? Yeah.

escapingthecity · 16/05/2023 11:42

@LadyWhineglass will you report back on how accurate your theory was at the end?

XelaM · 16/05/2023 11:46

I think it's always been an act/tactic and more a reflection of how the rest of the family don't take him seriously. He has always had it in him to be a total snake and he's very smart. He has been showing it from the beginning. It's always a good tactic for everyone to underestimate you.

tribpot · 16/05/2023 11:50

Yeah quite - Greg excels at playing the happy idiot, but how dangerous is he really? Has he been manipulating Tom all this time, rather than the other way around? That would be hilarious.

blahblahblahandblahsomemore · 16/05/2023 12:08

Amazing episode and after weeks of feeling sorry for Roman I now think he deserves all the bad things.

Shiv was amazing in this, all her power gone (see also Kerry and possibly Marcia for women loosing their power) and the scene where she knew she'd been found out was brilliant - Sarah Snook played it perfectly.

Greg knows how to play the game so well - I think the others assume they will always come out on top so don't bother to a certain extent.

And Euan is back next week. Love Euan.

Yes, I will indeed! Although in true Roy style I will say that whatever happens is what I predicted 😉
