I am so excited I am literally sitting here bouncing after watching the 2nd trailer

It's OK I know I'm sad, especially as I really want the "Gene says relax" T-Shirt

OP posts:
Nymphadora · 12/04/2010 19:59

What was the US ending then?

BelleDameSansMerci · 12/04/2010 20:08

OK - have just watched it again... I think there is an emphasis on waking up. Alex's dream sequences with Uptown Girl kept interrupting/repeating at "and when she wakes up...". I think the voice at the "Life On Mars" moment says "wake up" and not "welcome". Waking up makes sense with the coma stuff too. Also, it's all moons, stars, dreams and other sleep related stuff.

I don't think the decayed face is Chris though.

Also did you notice the weather vane at the end? It's an old man with a load on his back with a stick. What's that about?

And finally, according to Gene, the unpleasant James wants to take them all down - could that be to hell?

BelleDameSansMerci · 12/04/2010 20:12

I thought the weather vane might be Old Father Time but there was no scythe...

Hermya321 · 12/04/2010 20:29

No I didn't think the decayed face was Chris's either.

Maybe the idea is on awakening, I do wonder how on Earth Alex got back there though. She didn't make a decision like Sam did, she was more pulled there wasn't she.

BelleDameSansMerci · 12/04/2010 20:37

Slapped, in fact

On another discussion board it said that the shadow of the weather vane was on Alex's floor in her flat when she was dreaming. How on earth do people notice these things?!

And why am I so obsessed...

JackieNo · 12/04/2010 20:43

Apparently the weather vane is pointing towards the North west (ie, Manchester), though DH thought it was the Father Time weather vane on Lords CRicket Ground. And I read elsewhere that the voice saying 'welcome' when the Life on Mars music plays is the voice of Winston, the barman from Life on Mars. Don't know if that's true, though.

BelleDameSansMerci · 12/04/2010 20:54

Ah, so I misheard in my determination to keep my waking up theme ...

RunawayWife · 12/04/2010 21:19

Gene Hunt is a pig, he is rude, he is a misogynist, he looks like someone hit him in the face with a spade.....so why do I watch it and think Yeah i would

rookiemater · 12/04/2010 21:22

I'm finding the new series a bit too self reverential for my liking.

However attention to detail is excellent, did anyone else see Shazzas orange eyeshadow and have hideous recollection of wearing similar shade in 80s and thinking it flattering.

NoseyNooNoo · 12/04/2010 23:28

What's the stars business?

bellissima · 13/04/2010 11:43

US ending was awful - they were all travelling on some space ship to Mars at some time in the future and in order to keep them occupied during the journey they were allowed to have some personal dream/fantasy machine and Sam Tyler's was that he was a 70s cop, ie he was just living out a personal dream.

Still think, in a way that he (ie the actor) was right when he said they should just have ended LoM as he jumped off the roof in mid-flight - would certainly have been a better 'movie' ending. But then, we wanted him to go back to the 70s, and much as Ashes irritates me I want to see Gene doing Uptown Girl....

mumdebump · 13/04/2010 15:25

I missed the wake-up/welcome thing, and the weathervane (BTW it's not the Lord's weathervane, that has a scythe). Am rapidly going off the series concept with all these ridiculous hidden clues. All a bit Twin Peaks/Lost bllcksy for my liking, but I love the 80's styling.

PS. Am I the only mumsnetter not to find Gene Hunt attractive then?

mumdebump · 13/04/2010 15:28

Should have read 'bollocksy'. Tried to replace o's with *'s

KayHarker · 13/04/2010 17:05

I'd agree with the hidden clues being a bit silly if it wasn't for the fact that this is definitely the last series, it's not going to drag it out like Lost.

I don't think you're the only one to not find Gene Hunt attractive, but I think you might be in a minority.

Nymphadora · 14/04/2010 06:44

I am in the minority too!

The US end sounds crap, I wanted to see it as well
we think we saw it getting filmed when we were on holiday a couple of years ago, could see trailers with names on & 70s stuff out anyway

CalmCalmCalm · 14/04/2010 21:18

Hi there. I've tried to curb my obsession, but 'tis no use. I bloody love all the hidden clues!

It may have already been noted, but the weather vane was shown in the news report at the beginning, about the dead policeman. Presumably it's where the body was found. I think it might be Gene.

Also, I got the impression that Alex didn't wake up into the real world. Mainly because of Gene & co popping up everywhere, but also because of sending Molly off to her Dad's. Molly was such a huge part of S1 that I just can't imagine Alex not wanting to be with her.

It is getting stranger though, isn't it? I mean S1/2 it was just Alex's dreams/hallucinations that were weird but now it seems the weirdness is spreading, ie Shaz's behaviour. Could the walls (of whatever world it is) be starting to come down? May be the stars are the world shrinking?

fartmeistergeneral · 14/04/2010 22:04

I think Shaz is dead - I think the moment when they played Life on Mars was either her realisation, or meant to give us a clue that she is dead.

I also think Gene was either responsible for Sam's death or feels guilty about it somehow.

And as has been said, Gene is the centre of all of this somehow - and I think the evil guy (can't remember his name) is like Gene's polar opposite somehow - good vs bad in some way.

fartmeistergeneral · 14/04/2010 22:05

What you've got to think is, if Philip Glennister was married to one of your friends and worked as a data input supervisor, would you find him attractive??

KayHarker · 14/04/2010 22:15

He does have the most beautiful eyes.

fartmeistergeneral · 14/04/2010 22:23

But could you just focus on the eyes and blank out the rest of him?

fartmeistergeneral · 14/04/2010 22:25

Did anyone see him give Jeremy Clarkston the cold shoulder on Top Gear a while back?

KayHarker · 14/04/2010 23:01

Yes, that was when the whole Gene Hunt hysteria was in it's infancy and Glenister seemed really uncomfortable with it. He seems a lot more confident in interviews nowadays.

I wouldn't need to blank out the rest of him - long legs, tall man, intense eyes, lovely big hands... wanders off into reverie

Nymphadora · 15/04/2010 07:06

Maybe they are all dead/coma? That was Shaz dying and that is why Chris thinks he is ambitious but can't leave Gene Hunt?

Rocinante · 15/04/2010 07:17

What about the reference to Jeffrey Dahmer? I think Alex mentioned him and Keats (?) nodded as if he knew the name, but Dahmer wasn't arrested till the 90s.

How would Keats know this unless he was from the future as well?

Nymphadora · 15/04/2010 07:31

I thought that was the point in that scene but not sure what the big point is ...
