Anyone going to watch - looks interesting?

Heathcliffscathy · 19/04/2009 21:35

the point is that they have served the sentences that they were given in a court of law. they ahve ALL done their time and been in prison.

so this is a legal way of keeping them in prison! when they are not legally required to be in prison any more.

ra29needsabettername · 19/04/2009 21:36

so agree sophable- nobody would make this choice.

OP posts:
TheBreastmilksOnMe · 19/04/2009 21:38

Why on earth anyone would want to watch a programme like this is beyond me.

ruddynorah · 19/04/2009 21:38

deemented- well the point is that they're locked away surely?

Heathcliffscathy · 19/04/2009 21:39

jesus he CHOSE physical castration.

i'm not surprised they think that he is ok to be released!

Deemented · 19/04/2009 21:41

I think people can choose however who they have sex with. Being attracted to someone... a man... a woman... or even a child is one thing. Choosing to have sex with a child is something completely different.

I'm bisexual. I find some men and some women attractive. But i choose who i want to sleep with.

haveilosttheplot · 19/04/2009 21:42

I agree with everything this guy is saying. He's very much the exception to the rule though it seems.

spicemonster · 19/04/2009 21:59

They also choose who they want to sleep with deemented, that's why it's called grooming.

ra29needsabettername · 19/04/2009 22:06

but being attracted to children would be utterly horrendous...

OP posts:
morningpaper · 19/04/2009 22:07

well that was very interesting

actually we have a similar system here really, don't we? Basically we have lots of "half way houses" which are actually not half way at all and people can't escape from - not that dissimilar

I kind of admired the guy who was castrated for making that decision and I do wonder if we should just do that and fuck it

I would not let any of them babysit TBH

SuziSeis · 19/04/2009 22:08

sophable yes you are right

but when they are obviously still a threat do you think thye should be free as they have done theor time?

LynetteScavo · 19/04/2009 22:11

Very uncomfortable viewing.

I was when it was said these men didn't choose to be child abusers.

Ewe · 19/04/2009 22:12

I think the guy who was castrated made his case very well, but 50 children? He molested SO many children in various ways. Despite the castration I am not sure someone like that should be released into society.

I am not a big believer in rehabilitation for psychological conditions though so I guess it's difficult for me to see the arguement for release.

morningpaper · 19/04/2009 22:13

no it said they chose to have sexual urges towards children

v. different

expatinscotland · 19/04/2009 22:14

'I was when it was said these men didn't choose to be child abusers.'

Yes, because no one is ever personally responsible for their own behaviour. It's completely beyond their control, just like dogs, and it's always someone else's fault.

Poor souls.

morningpaper · 19/04/2009 22:14

IT DIDN'T SAY THAT

SuziSeis · 19/04/2009 22:15

at university i went for a placement to a high (maximum?) security hospital

they were pretty straight up with us

no one wants a sex offender in their community

no hope serial recidivists end up in these places.....what other option is there?

LynetteScavo · 19/04/2009 22:17

That's not what I heard.

Did it say they choose to have urges?

Of course they don't choose to have urges, they do choose how to deal with those urges.

izyboy · 19/04/2009 22:19

Only watched the last 10 mins. I believe that paedophiles are not 'curable'. Yes they can realise that what they did was 'wrong' but ultimately the 'urge' will always be there. It will be a lifetime of trying to contol the 'urge'. Best left locked up imho.

SuziSeis · 19/04/2009 22:19

aaaarrrrrgghhhh

might have to get off this thread already

( not you lynette )

expatinscotland · 19/04/2009 22:23

I worked for 5 years in the criminal justice system and have yet to meet a paedo who wasn't a manipulative, at least average intelligence and often above, world-class liar.

They get people to be sympathetic to them however they can. That's how they operate.

ra29needsabettername · 19/04/2009 22:23

Nobody is saying it's ok to abuse children, obviously. However the fact is this happensand perhaps we need to engage with this in a way that is not just reactionary. These men were all once children, they are people however horrific their behavior and quite frankly how shit it would be to be in their position imo. It's far easier and more comfortable to hate blindly than to try to understand...

OP posts:
izyboy · 19/04/2009 22:25

Yes and to be housed 'safely' in comfort without being at risk to other children sounds right to me.

expatinscotland · 19/04/2009 22:26

Why is it assumed it's hate behind think the best option for such people is to be locked up indefinitely until such time as there is a well-proven method of rehibilitation?

Yes, they were once children.

But they are not now and their crimes utterly destroy children's lives.

I believe our first priority as a society has to be to protect our most vulnerable elements.

expatinscotland · 19/04/2009 22:26

Exactly, izy.
