oh I really liked this one, so much better than last year's Titanic nonsense. I liked the Victorian setting with snow blowing everywhere, I loved the Tardis-balloon, and I thought there was a nice amount of humour this time.

I found the Cybermen a bit silly but then I've never found them that scary since the episode with Trigger as the Cyber-Controller.

I wish Jackson had found his wife though .

pantomimEDAMe · 27/12/2008 12:03

I was disappointed by the Cybermen - they are usually terrifying but seemed a bit meh this time. Suspect Tipsy's right about the music. The first time they came back I jumped out of my chair in fright and landed on dh's lap! (They are in my hindbrain after watching Dr Who as a child - far more scary than the Daleks IMO.)

And I hated that big Cyberman robot - too derivative of King Kong or that Ted Hughes story about the Iron Man. Just seemed like another story that had been shoe-horned in.

I did like Dervla Kirwan though. As did dh!

BlackEyedDogstar · 27/12/2008 13:38

Yes the kingkong Cyberman was mental. Maybe thats xmas episodes for you - I always think RTM hastily packs in extravagant nonsense to be festive.

UnquietDad · 27/12/2008 14:10

Is that Russell T Mavis?

BlackEyedDogstar · 27/12/2008 14:16

lol err RTD

RustyBear · 27/12/2008 20:36

I liked the bit where the Doctor was telling Jackson Lake he was John Smith, but he knew who the Doctor was 'a bit of a legend' & just for a moment, he was John Smith from Human Nature, it was exactly the way he talked to Joan

scifinerd · 27/12/2008 20:52

I love Dr Who and enjoyed the xmas episode though not as good as previous. That dress was stunning. But is it just me or did you find that story about the second dr just a tease and a bit patronising at that. I think they should have focused more on the story and less on teasing the audience. In fact it was naff and contrived if truth be told.

lovecat · 27/12/2008 21:51

Okay, very clever peeps who know this sort of thing, this has been niggling me since Christmas Day...

Why, when Dervla killed the Cyberman who was trying to delete her, did the other Cybermen decide to fall in with her plans?

Surely, as emotionless beings, they wouldn't have been afraid of death and would have continued to try and make her one of them/kill her?

Also Rosita was a bit of an anachronism with her language - I suppose that was to make us think at first that she was a companion from another time, but it grated on me.

Fab dress. All the costumes were fab, actually. As I'm currently trying to costume an amdram production of Christmas Carol from charity shops, ebay and primark, I am now tempted to sneak into Broadcasting House and nick the lot...

KayHarkerTheHeraldAngelsSing · 28/12/2008 14:01

lovecat, Cybermen are fairly formulaic in their loyalty. When the Cyberleader is detroyed, they just shift to whoever is now in charge (and if no-one is, they designate one of themselves as the new 'cyberleader') As Dervla had been turned into the Cyberking, she was the default leader after she killed the previous Cyberleader.

There are suggestions that they have a certain sense of aesthetics, even if they don't have emotions, so maybe they liked her dress

lovecat · 28/12/2008 22:53

Thanks Kay - I think I'll go with the dress answer

treacletart · 28/12/2008 22:58

dr who commentaries tonight at midnight on bbc radio 7. But you'll be able to get ot on iplayer, should answer any/all queries. Its designed to be lsitened to over the episode like a drirectors commentary on a dvd.

Gavlaar · 30/12/2008 21:04

"have you got your legs on silent?"

RustyBear · 01/01/2009 13:46

Dr Who prom on BBC1 in a couple of minutes

KayHarker · 02/01/2009 00:26

sobs fitfully

oh, it was lovely. Ask me ten years ago if Doctor Who would be reducing me to tears because of the score, and I'd have thought you meant because of the pain of listening to synthesizer music.

BlackEyedDogstar · 02/01/2009 00:52

yes, the prom prog was truly wonderful

haveamerrymankyscotslass · 02/01/2009 16:15

Woohoo, we find out tomorrow who will be the next doctor. I did wonder when I saw when Confidential was scheduled on Saturday, but BBC News have confirmed it.
Who is your money on?

KayHarker · 02/01/2009 16:35

I want Paterson Joseph, I'll be happy with Chiwetel Efiojor, I'd hate Jimmy Nesbitt.

I have actually have the Stolen Earth on the telly in the background, and the music is like the soundtrack to my life at this point.

Which probably confirms that I don't have one, but anyway...

RustyBear · 02/01/2009 16:56

Kay - me too - DS gave me the series 4 CD for Christmas & it's now on my laptop and iPhone, so I can have it wherever I am

KayHarker · 02/01/2009 17:23

Good grief, how the hell am I going to function for the next day?

slayerette · 02/01/2009 17:25

I don't waaaaaaaaaaant a new Doctor!

Can you tell I'm not good with change?

RustyBear · 02/01/2009 17:29

slayerette - we do still have a year of DT....

KayHarker · 02/01/2009 17:32

slayerette, I'm in denial, anyway, I don'#t think my psyche has quite caught up with the reality of DT going.

Oh, for crying out loud, the kids want feeding now. This is important.

LIZS · 02/01/2009 17:33

is there any update on DT's back op ? Wondering if he will be able to record the specials yet (filming is due soonish iirc)and do any physical stuff ?

slayerette · 02/01/2009 17:37

He was hoping to get better in time to do the last few Hamlets but I don't know if that happened. Have they filmed any of the specials yet? They might need a new Dr sooner than they think!

LIZS · 02/01/2009 17:39

afaik the Prom piece was the last bit of filming , tagged on to the last series and Christmas , before he went to RSC last July.
