Help me remember the actor's name

Just to satisfy my itching brain!
Had a dream last night which featured an actor walking across a car park. He seemed familiar and I'm sure he's a real person.
The problem is, I can't think of much detail.
He's the sort of person who'd be in drama things like murder mysteries or maybe period dramas of the 1920s/1930s - he'd be playing a hotel proprietor type character.
I think he's fairly tall. He's an older actor - or at least, was then - he may have died.
White hair, with a bit of a wave, sometimes worn slicked back. A bit 'jowly' but not with a particularly wide face and has a moustache.
It's NOT Richard Griffiths. There's a similarity but the actor I'm thinking of has a narrower face than that and I don't think he has glasses.

Any ideas?

Ned Beatty?

Fgfgfg · 30/08/2026 13:04

Geoffrey Rush. Doesn't normally have a moustache but did when he played Einstein

No. Hairline is wrong but he could be in the right sort of age bracket.

Thank God you are back @PGmicstand . We have to crack this case!

Have we had Brian Murphy

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/02/04/actor-brian-murphy-dies-at-92/

Right kind of moustache but maybe not enough in the chin department?

Brian Murphy has exactly the right sort of moustache if it were a white/pale blond one. But it isn't him.

John Bluthal from the Vicar of Dibley?

PGmicstand · 30/08/2026 15:47

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 30/08/2026 13:25

John Savident or Jim Broadbent?

John Savident - No. Too bald and again, not someone from a soap as far as I can recall. Older pics of him have the right sort of chin/neck/jowl.

Jim Broadbent already discounted. Wrong face shape, eyes too manic.

Tom Wilkinson ? Jaw seems right but he's not known for his mustache ...

Repeating Brian Murphy in case you missed him.

The mustache is really causing a problem - there are lots of jowly double chins but no tache or you can have a tache but no double chins!!

Brian Murphy is fairly close in the moustache department but I've already discounted him as I know his name and what he looks like.

Tom Wilkinson - No. Hairline too high, chin not right somehow.

That's quite a bit more jowly - I imagine that when he shook those it was like a magnificent thunderclap.

Clive Swift

No. Hairline too high/hair more grey than white. I'd have recognised him from other work.

Really appreciate all the input so far.
I think, regrettably, I'm going to have to put this on hold. It's making me so cross that I can't think of the person. I can't think of anything they've been in, or any part of their name. POSSIBLY it's a Richard or Geoffrey sort of name (if that makes sense).

If you were to combine the various elements of the people I pulled out then you might be able to make a photofit:
A sort of 'stretched-out' and thinner version of Richard Griffiths without the beard, with a bit of Peter Ustinov as Poirot and William Gaunt thrown in.

A moustache like Brian Murphy
White-blond hair quite like Keith Baron when he was in Duty Free. Also hairline a bit like Michael McKean and Ian McNiece/John Stride
Similar around the eyes and mouth to George Cole
Similar across the cheeks to Conleth Hill
Similar around the eyes and nose to Brewster Mason

Tallish, quite solid/a bit overweight but someone who moves fairly lightly on their feet.
Good head of hair - not a receding hairline. Hair a bit wavy/full, and concentrated on the crown or top of the head. Maybe a bit shorter at the sides.
Fairly pale complexion (at least not tanned/olive skinned)
White/pale grey/blond eyebrows.
Possibly blue eyes but I'm not sure
No beard
Not a prominent nose

I do promise that if I work out/find out who it is I will post this. And I will check back for suggestions.
I attach the updated list, just in case anyone was keeping tabs.

Arnold Ridgely?

I'd suggest David Sterne as he has a lot of the features you mention but I think he's always been thinner on top.

John Pertwee?
Tom Baker?
SIr Karl Jenkins? (composer, not an actor)

I think I've got a good contender here Richard Vernon

https://jamesbond.fandom.com/wiki/Richard_Vernon

I tell you what @PGmicstand if there is a casting director out there going 'I need someone a bit like Richard Griffiths and a bit like Peter Ustinov' you could sell them your spreadsheet!

REP22 · 30/08/2026 17:23

Bill Pertwee?
Richard O'Sullivan (retired in early 2000s though)?

Anthony Quayle?
