Help me remember the actor's name

Just to satisfy my itching brain!
Had a dream last night which featured an actor walking across a car park. He seemed familiar and I'm sure he's a real person.
The problem is, I can't think of much detail.
He's the sort of person who'd be in drama things like murder mysteries or maybe period dramas of the 1920s/1930s - he'd be playing a hotel proprietor type character.
I think he's fairly tall. He's an older actor - or at least, was then - he may have died.
White hair, with a bit of a wave, sometimes worn slicked back. A bit 'jowly' but not with a particularly wide face and has a moustache.
It's NOT Richard Griffiths. There's a similarity but the actor I'm thinking of has a narrower face than that and I don't think he has glasses.

Any ideas?

Honestly OP, your commitment to the process is incredible. I bow down to the use of the spreadsheet for this. Queenly behaviour!

also, I hope you find him because I’m dying to know.

Colin Baker?

Good head of hair - not a receding hairline. Hair a bit wavy/full, and concentrated on the crown or top of the head. Maybe a bit shorter at the sides.
Are you sure that it's his hair and not a barrister's wig.

These are actors. Moustaches, beards and even hair might change. Wigs, fake facial hair, razors...

I thought that when she said it definitely wasn't Martin Shaw - Ray Doyle in The Professionals is very different to Inspector George Gently!

David Horovitch? I don't think he's been mentioned yet.

HesterLeggatt · 30/08/2026 21:25

some other possibles:

Peter Sallis
Bill Owen

Ian Carmichael
Graham Crowden
Donald Pleasence

That’s so funny - took me so long to write my list of suggestions with him as the No 1 contender out that we posted the same suggestion at the same time. Grin

Really appreciate all the input so far.
I think, regrettably, I'm going to have to put this on hold. It's making me so cross that I can't think of the person. I can't think of anything they've been in, or any part of their name. POSSIBLY it's a Richard or Geoffrey sort of name (if that makes sense).

If you were to combine the various elements of the people I pulled out then you might be able to make a photofit:
A sort of 'stretched-out' and thinner version of Richard Griffiths without the beard, with a bit of Peter Ustinov as Poirot and William Gaunt thrown in.

A moustache like Brian Murphy
White-blond hair quite like Keith Baron when he was in Duty Free. Also hairline a bit like Michael McKean and Ian McNiece/John Stride
Similar around the eyes and mouth to George Cole
Similar across the cheeks to Conleth Hill
Similar around the eyes and nose to Brewster Mason

Tallish, quite solid/a bit overweight but someone who moves fairly lightly on their feet.
Good head of hair - not a receding hairline. Hair a bit wavy/full, and concentrated on the crown or top of the head. Maybe a bit shorter at the sides.
Fairly pale complexion (at least not tanned/olive skinned)
White/pale grey/blond eyebrows.
Possibly blue eyes but I'm not sure
No beard
Not a prominent nose

I do promise that if I work out/find out who it is I will post this. And I will check back for suggestions.
I attach the updated list, just in case anyone was keeping tabs.

George Sanders?
