Seemingly unremarkable and often overlooked, Mary Bennet longs to win her family’s approval.

Is this going to be a spoof or some sort of spin off ?

2nd episode tonight at 8:30

Couldn't see a thread so hope this isn't a duplicate!

Sorry for strange title. The really pointless MN AI generated titles is making starting a thread something of a lottery.

I’ve watched the first five episodes. I loved it.

Hallelujah2020 · 15/03/2026 19:34

I wish they’d not released five - I so don’t want to binge

So its not a silly send up?

I'm just a few minutes into it & that's Lucy Briers who played MB in the 1995 version isn't it?

SkaterGrrrrl · 15/03/2026 20:03

Oooh!

LaurelSorrel · 15/03/2026 20:05

It’s not a bad parody or silly send up, no. It’s based on a book which was written to show the plot line from the perspective of the sister we don’t hear that much about. Great book, I’m looking forward to seeing it.

Thanks that sound interesting.

I have put it on to record, so something to look forward to.

Enjoying it so far

LIZS · 15/03/2026 20:27

There are nods to other JA adaptations in the music.

sittingonabeach · 15/03/2026 20:28

A shop with a bell - the horror!

FuzzyPuffling · 15/03/2026 20:33

I loved the book.

"With a bell!".
I never usually watch TV series but I'm enjoying this. 30 mins is a good length.

Happymchappyface · 15/03/2026 20:53

This is very clever. Seeing it all from Mary’s perspective is really cool.

I’m loving all the reusing of costumes from earlier productions. Mary’s dress at the Netherfield Ball is one from the 80s P&P.

gohomeroger1 · 15/03/2026 20:57

I just binged the 5 episodes as my mothers day treat. Loved it, want the rest now. I do have the book somewhere in the house so might have to read it before the rest is released.

Rictasmorticia · 15/03/2026 21:05

I really enjoyed the book. This seems an excellent adaptation. Very good choice of casting. I think Ruth Jones is the best Mrs Bennett I have seen.

Yes! A nice touch. And isn't Caroline Bingley Mrs Elton in Emma 2020?

Yes!

I always forget that & remember her in Delicious with Dawn French & Emilia Fox.

Knew Hill looked familiar!

readingmakesmehappy · 15/03/2026 21:43

I thought the book was really charming and I enjoyed episode one. I would love more good TV series with 30 minute episodes!

usedtobeaylis · 15/03/2026 21:44

I'm so looking forward to this. My only gripe is the focus on how plain Mary is but she's played by Sister Frances from Call The Midwife who is a very bonnie woman!

Cannot wait to see Ruth Jones in it.

Unnomdeplume · 15/03/2026 22:28

Good so far, read the book a few years ago, it seems a good adaptation so far. Longbourn was another alternate version- below stairs, which I'd like to see adapted

OrsolaRosso · 15/03/2026 22:31

I think that Ella Bruccoleri is quite suited to the role.

I'm not sure about the 30 minute episodes. Will there be a second series?

topcat2026 · 15/03/2026 22:39

I’m going to watch it in the morning, I’m just hoping there’s no woke casting going on, this being on the BBC.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 15/03/2026 22:45

Another 5 episode binge! It's lovely viewing and first thing I've watched on BBC in a very long time!
