Couldn't see a thread so hope this isn't a duplicate!

I am going (for the first time) to the Lake district in the Summer so I think I may have to do a rewatch!

Although it was filmed in the Brecon Beacons. Not that you need any excuse for a rewatch

One of my favourite things about the show is that some of it is filmed in St Fagan's - one of my favourite places on earth. I screamed when I recognised it!

The cleverness of the adaptation is to make her appear less attractive by excessive nose wrinkling for example and of course no make up. If you take most of us and get us to appear without make up and with let's say an unflattering hairstyle we won't appear beautiful - even if, with the correct styling, we can look appealing. Ella Bruccoleri is an attractive woman and an actor who isn't afraid to appear less attractive than she is for the part. The genius of the programme is that we the audience and the other characters in the show see Mary as more attractive because in London she is accepted for who she is. This allows her to shed some of the less appealing, priggish side of her nature. I think this applies to the Mr Hayward character too. He is styled to look less attrractive than he can be. His appeal is strongly enhanced by his smile and just the way he comes across. (Sorry for the excessive use of the word attractive :))

I also think that in the book, and therefore in the adaptation, they’re following Mrs Bennett’s lead in making Mary the family scapegoat. Therefore she’s not really so unattractive, but has been told this so often that she believes it and behaves accordingly, and so do the rest of the family. It’s really quite sad and part of the delight of the story is Mary shrugging this off and making her own life.
