Seemingly unremarkable and often overlooked, Mary Bennet longs to win her family’s approval.

Is this going to be a spoof or some sort of spin off ?

2nd episode tonight at 8:30

Couldn't see a thread so hope this isn't a duplicate!

The dyed hair/wigs of some of the sisters is distracting me… have started the book so hopefully will finish it before the last episodes land. I’ve just stayed episode 3.

confused by Mrs B ending up at Netherfield, at rhe end of P&P it clearly says that being too close to her mother is a bit awkward for Mr and Mrs Bingley so they going to somewhere closer to Pemberley.

the whole thing feels like a tribute to the mid 90s version. Which is fine by me. Hope there is a pond scene :)

Not with that Darcy surely?! Colin Firth he is not 💔

Unnomdeplume · 17/03/2026 16:56

Tangent I've read Longbourn more recently and it's clearly superimposed itself over the plot of MB in my head. 🫠 I'll have to re-read before next week

Yes I saw that recently in some fanfiction & I thought "not really much of a fan then"!

I loved it too. Binge watched it and am dying to know what happens.
The actress playing Mary is adorable.
I am hoping she needs new glasses at some point iyswim.

I have specs too. I see.

FuzzyPuffling · 17/03/2026 18:15

I'm getting new specs tomorrow. I totally resonate with Mary.

Abra1t · 17/03/2026 19:39

It‘a great but no way would the sisters make some of the grammatical errors, such as ‘to Jane and I’ or ‘with Mr Gardiner and I’.

Mary would also definitely know that the poet Cowper’s name is pronounced ‘Cooper.’

I am really enjoying it, though.

Butteredtoast55 · 17/03/2026 21:13

Ella Brucolleri is great as Mary - your heart just breaks for her! She's been treated so badly and every time she slightly lets her guard down she gets hurt again. I'm only on Episode 4 but I'm rooting for a very happy, satisfying ending!

Anewerforest · 17/03/2026 21:33

Nah, don't like it. Why can't writers invent their own characters instead of rewriting other authors' characters and stories. Mary here is nothing like Austen's Mary, who came out with pompous howlers at home and was greedy for attention when in public. An insight into her inner mind might have been interesting, but this is a different Mary altogether.

I’m going to watch it in the morning, I’m just hoping there’s no woke casting going on, this being on the BBC.

That you, Sarah Pochin?

I noticed those three but hadn't mentioned them yet! Thank you for doing it.
I was wondering if I could excuse them on the grounds of the girls never having had a governess but I don't think JA allowed them to speak badly.

In what context were those said? They are not incorrect in every case.

That's what I was thinking.

Abra1t · 18/03/2026 08:35

In the contexts I quoted, ‘I ‘ is never correct. ‘To’ and ‘with’ don’t take ‘I’ because they need objects after them (me/him/her etc).

It is a frequent overcorrection.

‘when to use me can be difficult, especially when you’re not sure whether you’re the subject, direct object, or indirect object of a sentence. To make it easier, here’s a handy trick writers use to determine whether to use me or I: Remove any additional nouns and see if the sentence still makes sense. Take a look at this sentence:
Miguel, Sara, and __ are taking Intro to Literary Criticism next semester.
If you aren’t sure whether to use me or I, take away the other subjects, replace them with I and me, and see which makes sense’

They are invariably incorrect in the contexts in which @Abra1t quoted them.

I know they're not always wrong. Jane said something about someone coming to stay with Bingley and I, but as she and Bingley were the indirect objects of the sentence, and she would talk about someone 'coming to stay with Bingley' and 'coming to stay with me', if she had spoken about each person separately, when she had them together in the sentence she should have said 'coming to stay with Bingley and me'.
If I find or remember the other one I'll mention it.

upinaballoon · 18/03/2026 13:47

Mind you, Miss Jane Austen often used 'myself' in places where some of us, nowadays, would shudder and say. "ME".😀
I've given up Mumsnet for Lent. Sinned again.
I can't remember how the book ended. I wonder if they are going to change that!

Agreed. I loathed the book

it only ‘worked’ by changing the characters of Lizzy, Mr Collins, Charlotte, etc from those JA created.

That’s what I was thinking. Mrs Bennet would most likely have been of the my dear husband and I school of trying to be posher than she was.

Rostio · 18/03/2026 20:16

I am very grateful for this thread otherwise I would probably have missed this. I've watched and loved all five episodes released so far. My only quibble is that I think they did Charlotte Lucas dirty.

I have enjoyed all the spin offs of J.A. There's one by an Australian author about Mary, where she ends up going to Australia (great), a murder mystery by a major English author (great), and another one by a Scottish author best known for crime novels. All thoroughly enjoyable. I love going into the Austen universe. Longbourn is great also.

Oh no! You don’t think they might have, gasp, cast black or brown people in this fictional tv programme? I will keep my smelling salts to hand, just in case…

Are you referring to Death Comes to Pemberley? I really enjoyed the adaptation of that!

Rostio · 19/03/2026 07:17

I really enjoyed the one from the servants' perspective ("Longbourn"?) and agree with PP that it would make a good adaptation.

SailingYachty · 19/03/2026 07:42

I’ve really enjoyed it so far, I think it’s a great take on it, that Mary in a different setting with people who nurture her could really change and grow. I’m looking forward to the next episodes. (Totally agree that Mr Darcy was a bad casting, eek!)
