Seemingly unremarkable and often overlooked, Mary Bennet longs to win her family’s approval.

Is this going to be a spoof or some sort of spin off ?

2nd episode tonight at 8:30

Couldn't see a thread so hope this isn't a duplicate!

Watched 5 episodes and loved it

literallyarabbit · 15/03/2026 23:17

Delightful. Exactly what I want to watch on a Sunday evening! Love all the nods to the other adaptations of P&P too. Am determined to watch at tv pace, so looking forward to the next Sunday and episodes 3 & 4.

Oh fab!

NedsAtomicWheelieBin · 15/03/2026 23:43

I turned it off half way through the first episode! What are you seeing that I'm not? I thought it was really dull.

Sandypebbles · 16/03/2026 07:11

I watched the first 2 episodes last night and really enjoyed it. I recognised Ella Bruccoleri playing Mary from Call the Midwife. But kept thinking she really reminds me of someone else. It was only when she donned the glasses I thought OMG it’s Sam/Jude Riordan from Coronation St!

PurBal · 16/03/2026 07:28

I didn’t make it through the first episode.

Thought it was dreadful - and won't be watching any more.

Enko · 16/03/2026 08:08

Ive read the book. I am enjoying this on par of how I am enjoying bridgerton (that I also read prior to filmatisering)

So to not add spoilers to those doing them as bbc screens I will just say I have some issues where. Some of the settings/behaviours are.

2021x · 16/03/2026 08:31

I watched all 5 episodes so far and I am invested. I haven't read the book and you can get passed all the diverstiy casting quite easily.

Mary Bennet is very good and the 30 min episodes are a great. I can't be bothered with Bridgerton with all the series, but this is lovely.

dottiedodah · 16/03/2026 08:32

Well I thought it was great! Didnt read the book. But amusing and fun with some serious sibling rivalry thrown in .I shall watch next week avidly

MyOtherProfile · 16/03/2026 08:38

Watched 3 episodes last night and loved it. I read the book and listened to the BBc radio dramatisation and the series so far is living up to my expectations.

Ruth Jones is good but Alison Stead man is still my favourite Mrs Bennett.

twentyeightfishinthepond · 16/03/2026 08:42

Alis Steadman is my favourite too, but Ruth Jones is more believable. I loved Richard E Grant in the role of Mr Bennett.

senua · 16/03/2026 08:42

I wasn't enamoured. It felt a bit like painting-by-numbers, duly ticking off the famous scenes. I'm hoping that it gets better from here on in.
Having said that. I thought that the character of Mary came across well. Ruth Jones' portrayal of Mrs Bennet was understanding and nuanced (I hate hate hate Alison Steadman's version).

ETA I wrote this before the above posts. What is wrong with you! Alison Steadman was an appalling Mrs B, a screeching caricature.

So? There were many Asian people in the UK by the start of the c19th. There wasn’t the rabid racism either

As a massive Janeite I always find these things clunky, and this absolutely galumphed through the first two episodes - I guess this is the point where it departs from the back story of P&P and becomes a story in its own right?

But I thought Emma B is doing a fantastic job of Mary. I did get a bit of a 'Guillermo/Gizmo from WWDITS' feel - the way her internal reactions show themselves on the surface - it's a real skill.

Ryan Sampson (who I love) was doing Mr Collins as David Mitchell... Ruth Jones and REG didn't really have room to stretch in the time, but good choices... Lots of comedy chops in this. Will watch again, eh, it's Sunday night, but won't read the book just because it's not my kind of thing.

Miranda65 · 16/03/2026 08:51

I enjoyed it, and I think we needed to get past the original P&P plot fairly quickly, so that we can get on to Mary's own story.
I loved Richard E Grant as a perfect Mr B, and Mary was excellent - she reminds me of a young Sophie Thompson.
Thrilled to see Lucy Briers, who was a great Mary herself, back in the day.

That's exactly what I thought! Sam!

I’ve read the book and have seen the first two episodes. Am loving it.

CapabilityBrownsHaHa · 16/03/2026 09:07

I enjoyed it - watching at TV pace. I did have to double check that it wasn't David Mitchell playing Mr Collins when he first appeared! 😀.

Looking forward to "her" story, now we've moved past the P&P timeline.

I’m going to watch it in the morning, I’m just hoping there’s no woke casting going on, this being on the BBC.

Can you describe what you mean by this? What do you consider Woke casting, and why does it bother you?
