What Not To Eat - c4 Tuesday 8pm

I couldn’t find a thread, so I thought I’d start one.

Tonight was episode 2/4 and it’s presented by Tim Spector.

My first impression is that I really miss Michael Moseley.

They appear to have found a couple in their mid 60’s that live on pies and wine. They are trying to get them to reduce UPF but that appears to be the least of their issues really.

Tjere was an interesting point about chopping certain vegetables and leaving them 15 minutes to allow them to release some chemical that improves heart health. I’ll be looking into that.

I don't find it hard to believe. People might be aware of what constitutes healthy eating but just get into bad habits and put it to the back of their mind. I'm the same.
I like the dietary advice on this programme as its realistic and achievable. The meal he cooked in today's looked delicious

Fizbosshoes · 21/01/2026 00:07

Ive only watched today's and found it basically a rehash of you are what you eat or supersize v superskinny....(in terms of laying out their entire diet and finding people who - allegedly - never eat any fruit or veg)
I basically found it quite annoying, but that might be a me problem (I used to have an ED) that they make it a big reveal that if you live entirely off beige freezer food and then change to mostly vegetables...there'll be some health benefits....well no shit sherlock. But im not convinced they only ate beige food and had never seen a fruit or vegetable, before...

and then they talk about "small changes" - they revamped their entire diet- that is not really a small change, and then family waxing lyrical about how easy it was. I think i eat a fairly balanced diet but there's no denying shoving beige freezer food in the oven occasionally is usually quicker and easier than chopping 13 different vegetables to make into something. If it really was that easy, they'd have probably done it before.
And notice how they alter the filter to make the colours brighter in the "after" section and its dulled down in the "before". (The glucose goddess uses the same lighting/filter trick)

And I like vegetables but I wanted to punch them in the face if they mentioned "eating a rainbow" again.

Picking up on the point about filters @Fizbosshoes, I noticed this on the episode with the bath of noodles. The wife whose name I can't recall had no make up, hair scraped up until they go to get their final results when the picture is brighter plus she's wearing a bright pink dress and bright lipstick, instantly making her look miles better!!

Meredusoleil · 21/01/2026 05:10

I was mostly noticing the family's skin tonight. How they all seemed to have pink patches/spots in the before and not so much/at all afterwards. Especially the young lad!

I saw last week’s with the family with 4 young kids. And the Dad ate pot noodles every night, sometimes with a white bread / processed cheese sandwich to dip in it, and they ate phenomenal amounts of chocolate every night.

They had 4 small children and both worked f/t. I really felt for her and the amount of washing up the prep and cooking the new food regime entailed. But they worked so hard to turn things around and were such a loving and lovely couple.

This family lives near to a friend of mine, who says they are an absolutely lovely family, and when they moved in they were not overweight, neither of them, the guy had no beard then and he looked like Neil Jones from Strictly and the wife was not skinny but normal average build and was beautiful. You can still see how attractive she is now. It's all the time spent with the kids, work, shifts and just grabbing food - am guilty of it myself. I want to know how to make non-rubbish milkshakes.

1reason · 21/01/2026 13:57

I am enjoying this series with Dr Tim and Dr Kandi! I have learned some new facts about UPF and how to improve your diet.
People can know what they should be eating...but knowing and doing something are two different things!
I love seeing and hearing about the transformations in just 6 weeks! Only hope that the couples and families can sustain the changes long term.

MeMeMeMeOw · 21/01/2026 14:02

I should add they have kept the weight off in fact lost more than was shown on the TV.

To make non rubbish milkshakes just blend together milk, ice, strawberries and vanilla extract.

It's the thick shakes I like. I wondered about adding greek yogurt, or double cream to it.

popcornandpotatoes · 21/01/2026 14:39

I've only watch episode one so far but their diet was absolutely horrendous. I do enjoy these types of shows though

I have done the ZOE trial, listened to the podcast back to front, and all but quit UPF after reading all of Spector and van Tulleken's book - so I am secretly feeling a bit smug watching this...

Respect for Spector - but I'd much rather have a meal out with Michael Mosley (RIP), Professor Nut or better still Giles Yao (recommend the episode he did on DOAC). All eminently personable and with a healthy sense of proportion about things - while Spector strikes me as very much a purist.

That said, I definitely had a hankering for a pot noodle after episode 1!

Edited

I’ll have a meal out with Chris V-T any day of the week!
Who’s Professor Nut?

I have RA, I've literally never been given any dietary advice whatsoever. Similarly, my DS is diagnosed ND. Again, never been offered any dietary advice.

Who exactly is it you think are 'talking people through' what foods they should eat?

Well I suppose now I think about it, and Ive been ranting enough recenlly about the NHS not being preventative and doing enough work around lifestyle that I shouldnt think that does happen

It should

Im quite forensic about how food types can support issues I have, but no GP or consultant has talked to me about that, they cant wait to get you out their room or discharged.

Or shove you a leaflet which is extremely woolly.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/01/2026 20:58

The couple in Scarborough are still sticking to the healthy eating and apparently look really well. My mate knows them.

what is in diet drinks

SwedishEdith · 27/01/2026 20:07

How are people attracted to people who eat a packet of cream cakes with a glass of Coke for breakfast?

Meredusoleil · 27/01/2026 20:09

This couple seem extreme! A type 1 diabetic and an acid reflux sufferer 😕

Meredusoleil · 27/01/2026 20:11

This guy is only 42 and not changed his diet despite losing a toe and developing cataracts 😥

TheatreTheatre · 27/01/2026 20:14

Deeply uncomfortable: this is beyond the realm of ‘helping ordinary families identify UPF and adjust to avoid them’. He is seriously ill, and surely has some form of MH issue behind his eating?

LemograssLollipop · 27/01/2026 20:16

I can't understand this man who already has diabetes and yet is having chocolate éclairs and coke for breakfast! I'm having trouble having sympathy, it's clearly his choice to abuse his body. So sad.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/01/2026 20:17

So even after losing a toe he still drinks 2l+ of coke

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/01/2026 20:20

22.5 🙀🙀🙀🙀 he need to learn how to eat properly. Surely his doc and diabetic clinic would tell him not to eat what he does

Meredusoleil · 27/01/2026 20:24

I've been saying for awhile that fizzy drinks are the work of the devil 😈 My late df who had type 2 diabetes from around the age of 50, used to drink a lot of fizzy drinks too.

Meredusoleil · 27/01/2026 20:25

What does he have behind his ears? Are they hearing aids?
