I couldn’t find a thread, so I thought I’d start one.

Tonight was episode 2/4 and it’s presented by Tim Spector.

My first impression is that I really miss Michael Moseley.

They appear to have found a couple in their mid 60’s that live on pies and wine. They are trying to get them to reduce UPF but that appears to be the least of their issues really.

Tjere was an interesting point about chopping certain vegetables and leaving them 15 minutes to allow them to release some chemical that improves heart health. I’ll be looking into that.

True. I like cooked carrots but with a crunch

can’t stand soggy broccoli - my mum (god rest her soul) would cook green trees for 20m and be a soggy mess

FurForksSake · 30/01/2026 07:58

But you can get excellent frozen prepared vegetables and that saves a lot of time.

I regularly use frozen sliced or chopped onions, and sliced peppers in cooking. Thry wouldnt be the right texture for salads etc, but useful for stir-fry, fajitas, curries etc.
Some fruit or veg frozen is unpalatable though, frozen brocoli and frozen strawberries are horrendous.

They are bad value and dont keep for long but even bags of ready mixed salads could be an occassional win for people who are time poor and not used to prepping vegetables.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/01/2026 11:39

Nothing worse than soggy brocolli or strawberry

LemograssLollipop · 30/01/2026 14:09

The couple on the last episode were so extreme in their diet that a gradual process would have been more encouraging - if he cut down his cola habit to drinking it every other day that would have reduced his intake by almost half but he was still getting on the other day so would be more manageable. It might then even make him try to go two days in between drinking Cola which would be far more advantages than trying to cut it out completely with fizzy water which he hated and which it was clear he was never going to stick to.

I wonder how they are getting on?

Good to hear a pp say the Scarborough couple had successfully kept to the new regime.

@HarvestMouseandGoldenCups there are less than 500,000 Type 1 diabetics in the UK. The distinction is essential.

frogpigdonkey · 30/01/2026 16:57

I agree with a lot of the comments here- the changes are very extreme and unless you are wildly committed won’t stick to it. Don’t know why they can’t at taking things they like and making home made versions, like nuggets and burgers, and be realistic about going from an all UPF diet to a low UPF diet. Most of the diets shown are so extreme that gradual changes would help. I’ve changed to almost no UPFs and whole foods while losing weight for over a year but if I’d tried to do it all at once or with no tomato ketchup I’d never have got there!

FurForksSake · 30/01/2026 17:27

M&S will happily sell you some extremely expensive non upf sauce now. I bet the amount of time you can have it open for is very small.

But swaps and reduction and showing how they can incorporate it all would have been better.

I’ve watched all 4 episodes. I’m like a moth to a flame with this stuff. I do think it’s a tired format but was just the right side of patronising.

Frankie’s coke addiction needed proper consideration though. He didn’t even like sparkling water. That’s not a reasonable swap. I felt bad for him that he was so addicted and THAT was the suggestion.

like saying to a chocolate lover ‘just have an apple’.

for the chocolate lovers I did respect the suggestion about dark chocolate so they eat less to feel satisfied- less sugar etc

It was weird how Tim Spector in the lab was screwing his nose up about stuff being ‘slimey’ or ‘that looks disgusting’… I’d expect that from a toddler not a scientist.

I loved Michael Moseley and the VT twins though so Tim Spector was always going to be a hard sell for me.

WendyFromTransvisionWamp · 31/01/2026 08:02

Tim Spector is so pofaced. Him gagging at the chicken skin truly pissed me off Grin I do miss Michael Mosley, he had a twinkle in his eye. Fast800 changed my life, got me out of my sugar addiction and revolutionised how we eat as a family.

Yes I hated all the immaturity around the food. In lots of countries, the whole of the animal is ground up to make all sorts of salamis and pastes and pates etc, thres nothing 'disgusting' about it.

By all means highlight the fake ingredients and the harm they're doing but the pulling faces is ridiculous.

Stopbringingmicehome · 31/01/2026 18:47

I think Tim had his own problems with food

doggostepping · 31/01/2026 19:48

I’ve got some kombucha- I like it. It’s all natural and actually tasty. I will need some kind of medal though 🤔

FurForksSake · 31/01/2026 19:51

Tim will be knocking on my door. I’ve had upf dinner. KFC. But it was a rice bowl and had pickled cabbage, corn, rice, spinach, lettuce and sweet potato with the chicken… I’m calling it balance. He’d probably wretch.

Negroany · 31/01/2026 23:02

I love kombucha.

I made a sort of Chinese chicken thing with green beans for tea. Was supposed to make eight portions. I managed to make 5!

I also made a curry for tomorrow with the same amount of chicken, and that is also five portions.

Hmmm...I may be over-portioning.

I got some too. I like it… it’s like seltzer.

I als made my own pizza tonight. Tim would be proud of me. Well… until he spotted the Diet Coke.

It’s a statistic cited by RefluxUK - a charity under the Care Quality Comission. It states 20-30% of ‘the UK population’ and says they have GERD.

King Edward VII Hospital also cites the figure and says up to 3% of all GP visits are for reflux associated symptoms.

My DH has had it since he was a teenager.

10.5million Brits are prescribed PPIs (a reflux med). It’s the second most prescribed drug group after statins.

That doesn’t surprise me at all. Most of my family has it - me, dh, ds, BIL and his DCs. Some the silent variety, some regular GERD.
Because I’m v familiar with the symptoms I can spot it in others - coughing/clearing throat after food mainly.
A couple of my friends have it too.
I really struggle with it - have done for coming up to 4 years - despite dietary and lifestyle changes. It’s extremely frustrating (I’ve had loads of tests - mine is much worse at night). Thankfully I’m not puking after meals like the woman in the programme!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 01/02/2026 00:36

I’d never seen this programme before but watched it thinking it’d give me some handy hints and tips about eating better. Well.. to say I was disappointed is an understatement! I was absolutely flabbergasted at the appalling diet of the family who featured. How on earth could they be surprised they were all overweight, had low energy and looked off-colour when their diet was so bad? Meals consisting of biscuits and slices of garlic bread. Just mind blowing.

I watched the first episode and a bit of the second, then gave up. How can people be so unaware of why they are overweight when their diets are so appalling? There's enough information out there for anyone who's mildly interested in improving their diet so there was nothing new here. I didn't find it helpful at all.

Ive watched this final episode now

Very interested in the cultural background to the couple which I assumed would have involved their parents or grandparents at least cooking fairly fresh, veg filled, non UPF foods. But then I couldnt work out if they were American which means that perhaps they grew up on junk food as well. But if not I wonder what changed, perhaps their parents ate the same as them?

I did raise an eyebrow when the doctor asked him to phone his GP urgently, firstly it would take about 40 mins to get through to ours and unless you'd done an econsult they wouldnt entertain getting through to a doctor and predictably they didnt really 'do' anything, just aid they would monitor. Predictable

I really felt for him, I wondered if he was on the spectrum at all with the aversion to change and flavours and textures.

But ulitmately also amazed that previous medical staff in their life (him with his diabetes and her with her acid reflux) hadnt been through all of this as well? Perhaps they did.

Yes. I thought autism straight away having personal and professional experience.
He seemed a really nice chap.

He is not a natural presenter and he’s quite prescriptive/patronising. He should stick to writing!

i much preferred Michael Moseley and was gutted when he died. It hit me hard and I think it was because he’d said his dad died young and he always wanted to outlive him, plus the circumstances of his death were awful.
