I don’t remember the 1990s being so ‘traditional’ with people’s opinions on women at home.

Its still only 1991
I think things became more progressive towards the end of the decade paticularly in the run up to the millenium
I have a question about the racism
I know Ron doesnt think hes being racist even when hes being offensive and my parents unfortunatley may have had a similar attitude had i dated anyone who wasent white British
But would it have been common for for complete strangers to have told a young girl like Jaquie to only date white boys like the waiteress in the cafe ?
Sue thinks shes pregnant is she worried its Barrys?

I've just started watching again after several months off. Couldn't tell where I was up to as had to reset password, login all over again and I've restarted at the point I think I was up to, around 1989, I don't remember first time around yet, as a child. Will remember as I get a little further along.

I often think IRL a postbox just wouldn't be there. At the end of the estate, no passing traffic and a close with a handful of homes in. How spacious is that close though! I know it was purposely built.

It does make me smile reminiscing about life. In the last I saw, Jonathan was in an office at the Albert Dock overlooking the water. When I last went there, there were no offices where he was, there are all shops and restaurants there now.

Omg just caught up with the episode with all Ron Dicko’s racist names and comments - very upfront common amongst a lot of people 35years ago. At least Mike was trying to put him straight. Also true re the religious divide in Liverpool - my mum wasn’t allowed to date a Catholic boy in the late 1940s.

I thought that about the postbox, it wouldn’t be there irl would it.

Fun fact though, I visited the close last year and it’s so tiny in real life. Nowhere near as big and specious as it looks on TV.

VanillaImpulse · 26/09/2026 15:27

I think they included the postbox just so it would be an excuse for the neighbours to interact as they’d be more likely to bump into each other in the street

Yes i read that
All the other soaps had a pub ,shop etc and Brookside was just the close
Mind you the parade will be opening soon.

I can’t believe Josie has just upped and left her kids just like that. After Gemma going missing and all that upset. I can’t believe Mick’s brother turning up would create such a big change. She was happy with her family life.

I know i thought that was odd .

Paul2023 · 28/09/2026 22:12

Maybe it’s because I was a child and then a teenager in the 90s. But looking back it seemed quite a long decade. It seemed to go on forever.
Yet now the mid 2000s was 20 years ago, and I think of that as if it were yesterday !

Brookside was at its peak in the early 90s, although insight caught up with you all yet ! Im still in 1987!

I’m more shocked that she’s meant to be the same age as my DD!

Bit random but Liverpool held the garden festival in 1984. Brookside shot some scenes from there.

Harry Cross and Edna walk along the promenade, I’m guessing it’s the Mersey and not the sea? Across the water in looks quite industrial, chimneys etc..

Does the are still look the same today, what was the area across the water ? Birkenhead maybe ?

According to Google the area by the Mersey where the Garden Festival was held is due to be redeveloped for housing.

Asking the Mersey is still pretty similar looking across to Birkenhead. The Liverpool waterfront is much more developed now though.

I think the Wirral side looks pretty similar - I was going to see if I had any pics from a recent trip back, but they are all Liverpool! The waterfront on the Liverpool side has changed quite a bit, but I didn’t really take any of the southern bit where the garden festival was

Yes!
My husband came in and said well it’s obviously X because he’s got jeans and trainers on. But they all did 😉!

MadisonAvenue · Yesterday 10:49

I’ve noticed a possible plot hole.
Mike and his band were rehearsing over Ron’s shop, and the singer heard a scream. They would’ve left after the incident.
Next morning Ron and DD walked off the close and onto the Parade, oblivious as to what had happened, and the scaffolding tower was right there in front of them.
Wouldn’t Mike have walked past it on his way home?

bigTillyMint · Yesterday 11:54

I you’re right - it would have at least been a crime scene?
unless there was a back way out?

Yes i couldnt work that out
Presumably sue met graeme before lunch or maybe early afternoon the police would have been all over the parade and the close.
