SUMMERWATER sun,mon &tue 9pm ch 4 - TV PACE. NO SPOILERS

The Channel 4 drama is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by author Sarah Moss.

Dougary Scott stars alongside Harry Potter (https://www.radiotimes.com/tag/harry-potter-franchise/) legend Shirley Henderson (yes, Moaning Myrtle!) in the unsettling first look trailer at new Channel 4 drama Summerwater.

The new six-part Scottish drama is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by author Sarah Moss and boasts plenty of atmosphere in this promo, which airs on Channel 4 (https://www.radiotimes.com/tag/channel-4/) tonight (Sunday 2nd November 2025).

Summerwater has been adapted by Utopia scribe John Donnelly and is directed by TV crime drama veterans Robert McKillop and Fiona Walton.

The footage teases a non-linear narrative as a destructive event in a Scottish holiday park prompts questions about the dramatic lives of those in residence.

The official synopsis from Channel 4 reads: "Set predominantly at a remote loch-side Scottish holiday cabin park, Summerwater looks at the simmering tensions between holidaymakers that eventually erupt into a devastating climax."

The synopsis continues: "Weaving together the lives of several families as they navigate unspoken conflicts, private dilemmas, and fleeting moments of beauty from their disparate cabins, the story flashes back to dramatic events in key characters’ lives before their holiday which may have consequences in the present."

Summerwater is the story of a group of strangers who happen to be staying in a Scottish holiday camp during the same week, a week during which it seems mostly to be raining so often that the various families are largely confined to their cabins where they surreptitiously spy on each other through slatted windows. 😂

Channel 4 itself boasts that the show is "thrilling and compulsive" and "character-led".

Could this be a classic whodunnit? Or something all the more disturbing?

Alongside Scott and Henderson, who are visible in the trailer, the drama also features performances from Blue Lights (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/blue-lights-season-3-release/) favourite Valene Kane, Showtrial's (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/showtrial-bbc-review/)Anna Próchniak, House of the Dragon (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/fantasy/house-of-the-dragon-season-3-release-date/) actor Gabriel Scott, Vigil's (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/vigil-season-3-cast-first-look-newsupdate/) Anders Hayward, and The White Lotus season 3 (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/white-lotus-season-3-release-date/) actor Arnas Fedaravičiu.

We'll have to see who is playing a guilty party when the drama finally arrives on our screens...

Ah ok maybe she didn’t say the woods but it’s still a bit of a coincidence right?

SheilaFentiman · 02/12/2025 07:15

Yeah, I think it is meant to be ambiguous - Kerr could be a nickname for Kayleigh, Gavin said his DD was younger than Becky but Becky was lying to say she was 17 so maybe Becky is 15, Kayleigh 16 and Alex 17. M

But since the whole series is full of deliberate vagueness (was anyone ever in the bothy or was it all visions?) - coincidences have a bit of a different meaning to a normal drama!

deeahgwitch · 02/12/2025 09:27

God it was dreary.
The Scottish Tourism Board must be apoplectic.

CharlotteLightandDark · 02/12/2025 12:10

The bothy was connected to the ley lines in the area and its purpose was to show each person that went in there something important about themselves, there wasn’t anyone really in there.

There were a few occult references throughout like Gavin’s book and his talk of a sentient presence in the woods etc.

im not really sure why Alex went into the burning cabin, and it would have been much more satisfying if Lola had been caught out but I guess that’s life isn’t it

purpleme12 · 02/12/2025 12:19

Alex went into the cabin to rescue Violetta

Although she'd already got out by then

SheilaFentiman · 02/12/2025 12:19

im not really sure why Alex went into the burning cabin

Because he saw Violetta at the window of her bedroom, trapped in the flames, so he was trying to save her, not realising others had got her out as he was climbing up the scaffolding.

No, he was imagining holding Kayleigh's hand as he was dying.

See. I need people to explain to me

They have some great actors but I made it to episode 3 and couldn’t continue. It’s a hard one to watch and get into. Such a shame.

deeahgwitch · 02/12/2025 18:46

I agree that he imagined he was holding Kayleigh’s hand as he was overcome by the smoke and flames. He was so brave but people didn’t know that. He wasn’t the “cool” guy but he was a brave one. 🥲

Clawdy · 03/12/2025 08:25

I thought Alex went in thinking it was Kayleigh inside, not Violetta.

No, he saw V at the window screaming before her parents managed to get the locked door open (Lola had locked the door) and he climbed up the scaffolding to get to her

I thought Alex went in thinking it was Kayleigh inside, not Violetta.

I also thought this at first - seems like there was a lot about it that wasn’t very clear which I don’t mind generally as a viewer having to do some of the work myself but sometimes it’s a bit less satisfying

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 03/12/2025 17:57

Was reminded by the bothy mentions, didn't Justine go in there and see a younger version of the Dr wearing a special ring they'd highlighted in the scene at the recycling bins where she'd seen him and his wife earlier. I remember thinking maybe they'd had an inappropriate liaison when they were there as teenagers years ago? Not that I care mind, I'm onto the next dramas now, lol.

SheilaFentiman · 03/12/2025 18:03

Yeah, I really didn’t understand that one - because it seems in retrospect it was David and Annie having a threesome with someone else (Celine?) and Annie later mistook Justine for Celine, but why did the flashback happen in Justine’s episode?!

purpleme12 · 03/12/2025 18:05

I don't think it was Justine the doctor had an affair with

CharlotteLightandDark · 03/12/2025 18:07

I thought it was Justine that Annie and David had the threesome with?
would she have been too young though? 🤔

purpleme12 · 03/12/2025 18:07

Ah no I didn't think it was Justine!

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 03/12/2025 18:11

I'm beginning to think they made it up as they went along, lol.

SheilaFentiman · 03/12/2025 18:37

David had an affair with a young woman who got pregnant, then he wouldn’t leave Annie for her

Separately, David and Annie had a threesome with a woman, Celine(?)

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/12/2025 20:44

Scotland certainly has his swingers then

Late to this - The episode with the doctor and his wife was so sad. Great acting !
