The trailer for the second series of The Night Manager has been released.

The first episode is set to air on 1 January 2026!

Anyone else can't wait for this? All the talk over the years about a second series and it's almost here!

And Series 3 has been given the greenlight, too.

I found it slow and quite confusing.

Hugh Laurie's voice was phenomenal (as was Corky's). I am struggling to pick up a lot of this baddy's dialogue - partly that's the accented English.

I thought it lacked some exposition.

Yes, I'm missing Roper and Corky. Hopefully the new characters grow on us.

Gloriia · 02/01/2026 08:54

'The team completely going off piste and going on their own investigation felt unrealistic considering they were a night surveillance unit.'

Yes I was baffled by this. I didn't see series 1 so I presumed I'd missed something and they were all actual field operatives pretending to be owl surveillance? Or were they really just a surveillance team who managed to acquire weapons and passports etc and went rogue? Why didn't mi5 /mi6 whomever know what they were doing?

I'm willing to suspend belief for dramatic purposes though and found it tense and gripping. Just a bit silly though and wtf is Olivia Coleman's accent supposed to be she sounds like an extra from a Wallace and Gromit show.

PrincessScarlett · 02/01/2026 09:01

@Gloriia in season 1 there were several corrupt government officials in the pocket of Roper and in season 2 we already have Myra as being corrupt so that is why Johnathan is carrying out rogue operations. Although taking along untrained desk operatives was a stupid thing to do as Johnathan knows how dangerous these arms dealers are.

Clearinguptheclutter · 02/01/2026 09:09

I’ve watched the first two episodes. Not sure it’s going to be as good as s1 but definitely enjoying so far. Very far fetched mind.

actor playing the son is definitely the same boy (Noah Jupe).

I wonder what happened to Jed. Maybe we’ll find out. I think she lived from s1? I don’t think Elizabeth Debicki is about to turn up though.

as super as HL was in the original I always felt the stand out star was Tom Hollander (Corky).

Northerndoglover · 02/01/2026 09:14

I’m not convinced that Roper is dead, I think the image of him wasn’t clear enough.

I thoroughly enjoyed it but agree with pp that this series is missing the presence of Hugh Laurie and of course Tom Hollander (who is outstanding in whatever he is in). It’s definitely the Hiddleston show isn’t it? Not that I mind 😂, even though my OH is female, he is my male crush!

The Indira Varma character has the potential to be very unbelievable though. Head of SIS being corrupt? Ok.

Yes i can see he's taking on rogue operations but I wasn't sure if it's an independent thing or if he is part of a higher up undercover group, like Ethan Hunt and the IMF in Mission Impossible. If he is doing it alone where does he get weapons etc.

Anyway I'll stick with it as it was good. I wish he'd cut his hair though he looks a bit 1960s Michael Caine.

QuenchedSquirrel · 02/01/2026 09:25

I agree about the hair!

I agree about the hair too! Such a handsome man but the behind shots of his curly baby mullet in the making is not attractive.

Yes he's like a brylcream ad from decades ago, just whyyy would you go on telly with that hair do?!

QuenchedSquirrel · 02/01/2026 16:10

In the trailer (start of thread) there's a scene with Angela Burr and Pine, he says, "you lied to me", and she responds, "I had no choice".

So I guess that could be about Roper being dead. Or not.

Exactly. She barely pressed his neck to take his pulse!

What happened to Corky in S1? He was framed for something but did he die?

Jonathan murdered him.

Not loving it, so disappointed. 😭

Have moved onto Red Eye, first episode of S1 is fantastic.

QuenchedSquirrel · 03/01/2026 01:21

It's not of the same calibre as the original is it? Le Carre was truly a master.

😢

I rolled my eyes at the son of Roper reveal. And Teddy just seems like a run of the mill criminal. There's no fizz or excitement. It's all a bit pedestrian.

And straightforward. Nothing is left to develop. Whereas in the original Jonathan was building up a background and went to Cornwall to "murder" someone. Then "rescued" Danny. All to become a character Roper might trust. It took time.

In this, he's whizzed through a whole heap of names with barely the passport ink drying between them. In fact he just seems to whizz from scene to scene, country to country, all the time. There's no space.

The ridiculous conversations everyone is having in public places where anyone could overhear! 🙄

And I hate his fucking hair!!! It's so wrong for the part.

So disappointed. ☹️

I really like his hair!

One thing which confused me is that the £300mill seems to still be sitting in the bank? Wouldn't that have been taken back? Or did I misinterpret that part?

I thought it was in the coffers of the security services and was to be used for operations. Hence why they could finance all Pine's gallivanting about.

Seems a rather flimsy premise that it'd be there for their use after ten years...

I like series which return a few years later with a child appropriately older - we saw it in Line of Duty and in Happy Valley, too, where the writer (Sally Wainwright) said they had to wait a few years for him to grow up enough to make the plot work.

As for Hugh Laurie, wouldn’t it be wonderful if Richard Roper hadn’t died and he came back to the programme with nobody expecting him, no publicity and so on?
But if the character is dead, then how did they do the post mortem identification scene - would Hugh Laurie be agreeable just to come back, have hair stuck on his face and lie still for a while?

BillStickersIsInnocent · 03/01/2026 07:42

HL is credited in the first episode but he does appear in flashback so could be relating to that. He's also an executive producer again on this series.

Yes, in the biggest surprise so far of 2026, Red Eye was much better than The Night Manager!

Raisondeetre · 03/01/2026 08:26

I’m not enjoying this series much. Switched off halfway through the second episode. It’s too similar to the plot of the first one without any of the things that made the first one enjoyable. It feels very going through the motions.

Yes, similar but without the charm and charisma. It's more like a pretty generic spy drama.

I agree about the hair!

It's a wig! I ended up down an instagram rabbit hole. I was astonished at how many actors wear wigs. Not outlandish or glamorous or radically different to their own hair necessarily. Just ordinary looking hair for the most part. Incredibly realistic too. Must cost a fortune. Tom H has several for his part in this.
