Game of Wool

What did we all think of Game of Wool then?

Personally I thought it was mostly all about Tom Daley - did he really have to try all the tank tops on himself? And also that there is never going to be enough time for each challenge for the contestants to make something worthwhile. Who would actually use a knitted sofa cover?
It’s such a condensed version of the challenge, we won’t get time for much witty banter either.

The jury is still out for me.

I stuck it out till the end and found some new online content creators as a result. Nothing tempted me to apply to be in a future series. Even having access to a barn full of supplies wouldn't offset the risk of being edited ungenerously and getting shit on social media.

KnickerlessParsons · 22/12/2025 11:40

I saw a recommendation on a FB chat (The Yarnery) that they could have kept all contestants in until the end and had a scoreboard system to decide the winner - each item made could have been scored out of 10, or the contestants ranked from 1-12 or something similar.
I thought that was a good idea.

I like that option.

I also agree with the posts (I think on the same chat) that new judges would be better especially ones who have enough of a personality to realise that decorating their hair with knitting needles and wool is dickish as opposed to cute/funny/crazy/whatever 🙄

It might be a good idea but it is the antithesis on the standard format for these shows which create drama by eliminating someone every week.

So many people are criticising the show for doing what all the others in the genre do - tight time limits, challenges you wouldn't do in real life, perceived unfairness of judging, pressure on contestants. All fair comments but missing the entire point of the genre which is to make engaging television.

A programme where all the contestants had plenty of time, the challenges were achievable and nobody went home would risk being pretty boring to all but the most dedicated of craft enthusiasts. MY DP will happily watch Pottery Showdown, Sewing Bee and yes, Game of Wool, despite having no interest at all in crafts, because they make interesting viewing. Love Productions got turned down with the idea for Bake Off because no-one thought they could make it work on TV, but actually, their formula works. The issues with GOW were much more about production and editing than the basic structure.

Tom Daley is not a presenter, has not got the skill set and defaults to talking about himself. Crashing bore.

Im watching this on Catch up and just got to the bit where Holger was talking about being Gay and his parents wanting grandchildren when Tom went 'When I was growing up....'

Just spotted on FB that they are recruiting contestants for season 2. Says "Casting deadline extended to 17 April" - don;t know about the rest of you, but that says to me that they haven't got enough people interested.

SheinIsShite · 11/04/2026 09:10

And interestingly, the application mentions knitting/knitter repeatedly but not crochet. Not that I'm applying, was just interested.

Bake Off extends the deadline every year. I think maybe they do it to manage the flow of applications - get most in for the original cut off date then try to generate a few more by extending the deadline.

POTY filming starts next week as we’re going to watch filming on the 14th. I don’t think PAOTY has a problem getting contestants. I follow several groups of artists and there are numerous people with excellent portraits being rejected. Some try every year but I think they’re now looking for the ‘quirky’. The winner this year was a printer despite against some excellent portraits produced in the heats by painters.

Sorry forgot it was 2 weeks
i applied for 22nd and havent heard anything yet!
I have been for the last 3 years , they seem to change the application every year. This year it went straight to wait list!

AgapanthusPink · 11/04/2026 11:18

@bruffinThe tickets went live at midday on a particular day a couple of weeks ago. My sister who was trying to get tickets said at 12 they appeared to all be sold out and there was the ‘waitlist’. She kept refreshing her screen and then at 12:20 2 tickets popped up for the 14th. Almost as bad as trying to get Oasis tickets (which I didn’t get!).

I just kept getting waitlist! I was on there at 12
I will just have to try again next year. Just looked and they now say sold out but can still go on waitlist

bruffin · 11/04/2026 17:58

@AgapanthusPink
Cant believe this, but just after this thread this morning I got an email saying they were opening up tickets for the semi finals on 29th at 4.30.

I was there ready and waiting at 4.30, had 2 tickets in my basket but then said they were not available, then just kept getting messages that the event was not available. Refreshed for 20 minutes and got some tickets!
Never been so difficult in past years!

AgapanthusPink · 11/04/2026 18:29

@bruffinPersistence pays! This is my first time and I’m sooooooo excited.

@AgapanthusPink its really relaxed and apart from the end when they are judging and making announcements you just get to wander around and can come and go as you please.
