Game of Wool

What did we all think of Game of Wool then?

Personally I thought it was mostly all about Tom Daley - did he really have to try all the tank tops on himself? And also that there is never going to be enough time for each challenge for the contestants to make something worthwhile. Who would actually use a knitted sofa cover?
It’s such a condensed version of the challenge, we won’t get time for much witty banter either.

The jury is still out for me.

I teach crochet & all my workshop regulars think that it's unlikely that what we're told about the timescale the contestants claim to have is unlikely. The guy who said he'd never croxheted before .... and then did! Come on! Sorry, we're not impressed.

I thought last night had the best items so far but they all looked miserable. Food next week is going to be another daft shit show

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/11/2025 07:51

I’ve given up. The only thing I was watching it for in the end was the knitwear worn by the contestants.
I wish they had had features on that, with each contestant talking about their personal knitting style, how they planned a garment, any tips, etc, as opposed to doing weird challenges and not even talking about them.
Still, I saw a post on Facebook by a wool shop owner saying they have seen a customer boost from the show so that’s great.

What was the point of the 2 year old “models” ? We barely saw them and they all looked older. I was n’t even sure all the garments were worn. Surely the point should be to make wearable or usable projects.

Yes I think a show that makes rushed unusable crap thus wasting resources is out of step with the spirit of the times.

I missed it last night. Is it worth watching on catchup?

My main bugbear are the reviews I’ve read mixing up knitting and crochet

This is also a constant bugbear of mine. And amen to this:

Don't like that women have been knitting for centuries but as soon as a celeb man does it, they are beating down his door to make it into a show

I haven’t been able to bear watching at all, as the trails have told me everything I feel I need to know. Stupid challenges, enormous needles and comically chunky yarn, plus Tom Daley, who sat doing a bit of bad knitting poolside and had people falling over themselves to tell him how wonderful it was. Not to mention the surrogate issue. Thanks all for confirming this was as terrible as I feared it would be.

Yes, must be it!
Particularly since it says, ‘. This pattern is wildly popular in the vintage knitting community, which has only increased since the release of the film Jojo Rabbit (2019) which features the pattern.’

I am beginning to think the 1940s were the great age of knitting; the quality of design and also the levels of skill there must have been in the general community. The yarn shortages and need to make do seem to have inspired a burst of creativity in pattern design.

It was the 50s for my mum, when the new look came in. She and her sisters used to make themselves circular skirts and knit little sweaters to go with them. They used fine yarns and did bust and waist shaping so they fit perfectly. From photos they looked fantastic.

I forgot to watch last night so I guess that says how much I’m enjoying it 🙄

How lovely PinkTonic.
I would absolutely love to see a tv programme about that. Interviews with older knitters showing us their photos, fashion historians putting it into context, showing us surviving garments, modern experts giving tips on how to achieve it, hell, make it a competition among a diverse demographic of modern knitters putting their own creative spin on the older techniques.
It would be lovely to celebrate the fact that knitting has traditionally been done by women with knitters of all ages talking about different styles, even if shock horror most of them turn out to be female.
There was one very good and informative documentary about the history of knitting and fashion a few years ago, but the subject lends itself so well to something interactive and instructional, and tv is the perfect medium for it, it’s such a wasted opportunity.

No.

but they all looked miserable

It's really quite noticeable how often the camera lingers on a disapproving (the 'judges') or a disappointed/disbelieving face.

Wilma55 · 24/11/2025 14:02

WARNING! I tried to find out the date of the final by googling, and AI told me the winner! And I still don't know the date...

Bluevelvetsofa · 24/11/2025 19:46

I don’t care for the judges.
Much of what they’re wearing is uninspiring.
I don’t mind Tom Daley, but his outfits are silly.

No one wants knitted deck chair covers, swimsuits or children’s clothes. I’d like to see some proper complex jumpers and dresses, using different techniques.

I don’t think I’ll bother again.

I think the problem with that is they have hobby knitters of different levels of experience and then are expecting them to do something in less than half the time. So they can't use complex stitches or take their time they have to think about whats the fastest. Also agree about the judges clothes.

AlwaysRightISwear · 26/11/2025 07:22

Next week the challenge is knitted food, lol.

I wonder if they're going to do that amiguruni? I quite like doing that . My kids despite being teen-agers have a variety of small sea animals!

It’s good for play food because it’s not plastic but unlike wood, if they throw it at each other they won’t get hurt.

Years ago my DM made a little kitchen for the grandchildren and knitted all the fruit and vegtables to cook in the pans,

Umanresources · 26/11/2025 15:14

I was really looking forward to this series, as I had just taken up my needles after many years. I thought it was going to be more like Sewing Bee, where I could learn a few things, as well as being entertained. I’m disappointed but I’ve spent a lovely hour reading Ariadne reviews, so I’ll have to keep watching it now.

it would have been better if they had been allowed to use fine yarns and create something small but beautiful. I’m not encouraged to try knitting any of the items on show so far and Tom (Emperor’s New Clothes) Daley is not in any sense an inspiration. I do like Holger though, with his deadpan delivery.

I might try knitting something now though but not a swimsuit!

KnickerlessParsons · 26/11/2025 23:27

Well I caved and watched Ep 3 tonight. The makes weren’t as stupid as some have been - the children’s outfits were quite good and I can imagine hanging a hanging thing in a nursery room.

Im sure the judges are lovely ladies, but by God, they are boring. They have no personality at all.

And will someone buy (or knit) Tom some proper clothes?!

OP posts:
Tablefor4 · 28/11/2025 11:04

The children's costumes have been the best so far - would have been lovely to see more of the details.

If we're being generous, the show still needs to find its feet. The judges are definitely failing to come across as the experts that they surely are.

NebulousSadTimes · 28/11/2025 11:49

Di Gilpin said on Facebook that she'd been to London and so many random people stopped and hugged her. My first and only thought was "Really?"🤔

Leopardsandcheetahsarefast · 28/11/2025 11:51

My knitting group hated it.

impossible challenges (no time) no personalities
liked TD before and don’t now

No really knowledge or history of knitting etc

amy100 · 28/11/2025 11:53

Yes the judges are really boring! Very unlike Patrick and Esme on sewing bee. It needs pizzazz. I also agree about the quality of the things being knitted - they’re not exactly inspiring !
