i caught a dreadful old Carla Lane one,
about Felicity Kendall being the other woman,
just dire
i liked Butterflies

I never liked Last of the Summer Wine or Allo Allo, and dont ever watch How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory

Yeah, The Mistress. Fucking dire.

’Oh, Max’, over and over. Carla Lane must have been having a funny five (months).

Like ‘Oh, Lee, what are you like?!’ in Not Going Out. Ffs.

Could they not manage to write and act female lives with all their natural wit and humour?

Tommy Cooper - no matter when I see him with is 'magic' tricks or slapstick or in his Fez - just no !! Not funny.

I completely agree. I think the joke was meant to be that he was a brilliantly funny comedian who was deliberately pretending to be a crummy comedian for comedy purposes - like when Les Dawson, who was a very talented pianist, deliberately threw bum notes in to make it look like he was rubbish for a laugh; however with Tommy, it seemed to be a double bluff, as he was indeed actually just a crummy comedian.

SprayWhiteDung · 14/08/2025 17:34

CalzoneOnLegs · 14/08/2025 15:45

@youareonlyhereonce he was a massive tight wad too

Wasn't he legendary for telling ordinary working people in a serving role, who were reliant on tips, to "Have a drink on me"... but instead of the expected folded banknote, he would just tuck a teabag in their top pocket?

Rather humiliating and 'know your place' even if he'd had a laugh and then handed over some cash; but I gather he didn't actually do that.

Lottapianos · 14/08/2025 17:38

I don't get Tommy Cooper either. I've heard the 'have a drink on me' story, what a tight bugger!

He didn’t practice his ‘gracious loser face’.

He should have taken a leaf out of Rachel’s book.

Obviously I don't live inside Kiell's head, but I got the impression he wasn't so much outraged not to have won as by the fact that MBB did win.

I reckon that, if one of the other nominees had won instead, he would have accepted it with good grace.

A bit like, in an art competition, you'd be disappointed but accepting for your entry to lose to another beautiful painting or sculpture; but you'd be so insulted if some clown gaffer-taping a banana to a wall was judged better than you.

dimsumfatsum · 14/08/2025 17:41

Melinda? The one with the tall lanky woman. Miranda?

Seems about right. To lose a competition to someone who is ineligible to enter is galling.

I think The Young Ones really suffered from the fact that they framed it as a 'variety show', because the BBC offered them a much bigger budget if they made it more than 'just' a one-dimensional comedy programme.

I also think that, even though Rik and Ade obviously went on to become a great double act in a number of successful comedy vehicles, purely for TYO, the characters of Rick and Neil were the strongest and funniest (especially Rick) - but they got bulldozed by Vyvyan in a most annoying and usually unfunny way; and Mike just seemed to be there to make up the numbers.

If I remember correctly, they were presented as 'alternative comedy' or 'new comedy', just when Victoria Wood and Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French were coming on the scene. They were part of a new wave. The Young Ones was (imo) really unfunny.

I liked The Young Ones. Time probably hasn’t been kind to it though.

There was another comedy on at the time also set in a university, A Very Peculiar Practice. That was excellent.

Derry Girls I cannot stand!

RavenclawWitchy · 15/08/2025 06:29

Bottom 🤢
Red dwarf

autienotnaughty · 15/08/2025 06:54

Friday night dinner was awful also agree re Mrs Browns boys, if he was a woman that show would never have been funded.

Whilst I'm not accusing MBB of anything illegal or any similar irregularities, it's also interesting how he's got his entire family involved.

It just make me think of a (albeit absolutely not illegal) TV equivalent of the 'front' shops on the high streets, where the whole family is on the employee roll, but you never, ever see any customers going in or out.

A 'barber's shop' where they never do any haircuts.
A 'cafe' where they never serve any food or drink.
A 'comedy show' where nothing funny ever happens!

Brilliant, you made me laugh more than MBB ever has.

Mrs Browns Boys or Miranda.

Coffeeishot · 15/08/2025 09:59

I didn't really like Miranda either, I love Miranda the person though.

salcombebabe · 15/08/2025 10:06

Miranda! I know people who think she's hilarious but she just leaves me cold

SprayWhiteDung · 15/08/2025 14:27

I find Miranda a funny, comedic person in general, but her actual show is too try-hard and misses the mark most of the time.

I feel the same about Kevin Eldon - talented and funny, but his own sketch show was very underwhelming. Karen Taylor too, actually.

Kevin Eldon is also a lovely lovely man. I wrote to him about a thing once and got a kind and helpful reply. He's a brilliant guest in anything, but yes, his own show didn't get over my whelm.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 15/08/2025 16:40

I’ve just remembered Fresh Fields with Hester running about in a velour tracksuit, I don’t mind Julia McKenzie but Hester was very irritating!

One Foot In the Grave wasn't uniformly awful, but it really wasn't great and I don't know why it got such good viewing figures for years.

XelaM · 14/08/2025 15:30

THIS!!!! It's so so so so awful and unfunny and all the actors are terrible

You have got to be shitting me. The actors are superb. And it's funny!

imfae · 15/08/2025 17:19

Just came on to post Miranda and MrS Brown’s Boys . I like Miranda Hart , she cone across really well when she is interviewed but her series left me cold .
Mrs Brown’s Boys , I just don’t get why anyone would find it funny . It could be used as a torture device for me . I would confess to anything if I had to watch it on loop …

I thought OFITG was a masterpiece. Richard Wilson and Annette Crosbie made me laugh every time they spoke.
