MargaretMountford · 01/06/2008 18:11

am I an old hard bitten hag, but where was the talent in the winning boy ? I have not watched it before and was staying with my ILs and they had it on...

lottiejenkins · 01/06/2008 18:14

I thought he had tremendous originality.........a thoroughly nice young man who was tremendously tslented and had the guts to come back after being told he didnt get through to the semis last year Go george!!!!

MargaretMountford · 01/06/2008 18:15

ah, so I am ! - the who;le thing seemed terribly underwhelming

falcon · 01/06/2008 18:23

George's act wasn't at all original, few of the acts were I'm happy to admit.

Take a look at this, does anyone else remember this ad?

www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4LzG3XZMUA

Raahh · 01/06/2008 18:55

i loved the ad and remember gene kelly purists being upset by it. Was it ever mentioned during George's auditions as his inspiration, or did he really claim it was an original act?

DirtySexyMummy · 01/06/2008 19:28

Oh my goodness - of course the song and routine aren't 'invented' by George - noone has tried to claim that! The song is a Mint Royale remix, and was used in that advert with Gene Kelly dancing.

Clearly this was his inspiration, but the dances are completely different.

None of the acts wrote the songs they performed to, so I think its a ridiculous thing to claim it wasn't good as it wasn't 'original' enough.

PuppyMonkey · 01/06/2008 19:34

I thought the one who won was v.dull. People only voted for him cos he was a ickle boy and he had a rain machine . That one who danced like Michael Jackson with Signature was a much better dancer.

The 12 year old who sand Ave Maria is the ONLY one who's going to have a career out of this show.

DforDiva · 01/06/2008 19:34

So fixed, i think everyone here have sympathy for him as much as Madonna Decena sob story..
looking thru posts, everyone said, he deserves it, poor lad, etc...
He seems got for getting soaked in that water. I seen George in Manchester, he is good but not that good to win.

DirtySexyMummy · 01/06/2008 19:40

Well, at the end of the day, it comes down to what the majority of voters liked to watch the most, and that was George.

DforDiva · 01/06/2008 19:45

agree, but did you checked youtube link for golf advert his ance is very much copy of kelly dance on advert.
soprry typo, got to go storytime, dh finished bath and bedtime

DirtySexyMummy · 01/06/2008 19:48

Jesus.. Okay, its very similar, it is the same style. Its always going to look similar. But it is completely different.

So, I guess then that Andrew, the wee boy singing opera, was just 'copying' Paul Potts from last year, for example?

The only thing the same as the Gene Kelly ad was the music. And noone ever claimed Goerge had anything to do with writing the music!!

falcon · 01/06/2008 19:51

I'm being pedantic I know but Andrew didn't sing opera.

DirtySexyMummy · 01/06/2008 19:56

I apologise. Classical.

flowerybeanbag · 01/06/2008 19:58

I haven't been on this thread but just wanted to come on and say that there are thousands of string players up and down the country as good as Escala and better. Nothing they played was remotely tricky.

Excuse me, I am just bitter and twisted that I decided to study HR for my living rather than wear a short skirt and prance around a bit in the string quartet I was in at university rather than sitting down decorously and keeping my legs together.

I maintained my musical integrity though....[notatalljealousreally]

DirtySexyMummy · 01/06/2008 20:00

Hmm.. totally off topic but am a bit at the assumption that because they wear short skirts it means they are not 'sitting down decorously and keeping their legs together'.

Nasty insinuation, IMO.

falcon · 01/06/2008 20:03

To be fair to George I don't believe he ever claimed that the dance was original though the ad was never mentioned either.

The unwritten laws for dancers are that more originality is expected of them than from singers, unless of course it;s a competition focusing on a particular style, ballroom for example when several dancers will do the same dance(S).

Singers singing in the same style or even the same song is generally more accepted, there are even entire albums dedicated to covers.

flowerybeanbag · 01/06/2008 20:03

Am I missing something? They don't sit down at all do they?

DSM it was a tongue in cheek post, not a criticism of them at all, no nasty insinuation intended.

falcon · 01/06/2008 20:05

I really liked Escala,I do remember Bond however who were rather similar.

I absolutely love Palladio.

DirtySexyMummy · 01/06/2008 20:07

Fair enough. I just get a bit annoyed at the general assumptions on MN that women who look good and choose to wear short skirts, for example, have less decorum.

Ignore me, it happens on MN a lot and I need to try and ignore it!

flowerybeanbag · 01/06/2008 20:15

DSM I am sure they are extremely decorous, would certainly not make any assumption otherwise

Just contrasting their more commercial, exciting style with the string quartet I was in, perhaps decorous was a clumsy choice of language.

Crunchie · 01/06/2008 20:21

dsm, but they are not sitting down they are prancing around in v v short skirts!! Yes they were good, but hardly original

CrazyMofo · 01/06/2008 21:07

OHHHH!!!! i liked Escala and George and Signature but tbh none of them are completely origional, but then since when was classical music origional??

islandofsodor · 01/06/2008 21:50

Well if we are going to be nit picky Faryl has already won the Llangollen Eisteddford and numerous other comps and Andrew is head chorister at Carlisle Cathedral.

Dd's dance teacher used to teach George and she says he is amazing and very hard working. He does have a future. He won a place at the Hammond School (very prestigious dance/ballet school) but needed funding to go there. Maybe the prize money will help him to do this.

lottiejenkins · 01/06/2008 22:45

I do hope he uses the money to fund his dance future as well as help his mum as he's already said he wants to............

Beetroot · 02/06/2008 07:09

isn't it funnny how we don't hear that he is head choriater

just that he has been bullied

If he was head C then his diction was not brilliant
