EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 19/07/2025 19:17

Thought I’d sound the KLAXON and round everyone up for some Strictly chat about possible/rumoured contestants. They usually start announcing soon!

I’ve heard Dani Dyer, Stacey Solomon, Ashley Cain and Tom Parker Bowles

Unlike occasionally in the U.S., our slebs don't dance to their own songs. Just not humble to do so! Wink I'll be amazed if it's not referred to in his opening VT though. Someone in silhouette does push a wall/lean heavily against it, aye.

I just think being a "celeb" is their job its the way of the world now, !

If Strictly is at the stage of ‘any celeb’ will do, perhaps they should start choosing a couple of non celebs.

Maybe deserving public sector workers…a nurse, a paramedic, a school cleaner…we have a young female refuse collector…would be more interesting.

They did a People's Strictly for Comic Relief one year. I'd love them to do it again/ do a longer version.

Dave Gorman does an interesting bit about 'celebrity' in one episode of Modern Life is Goodish. He debunks the idea that in the past all celebs were worthy of that status and goes into why now people can be famous without everyone knowing who they are, basically in the 70s if you were famous everyone would know your name/face because we had one TV that we all watch together and a grand choice of 3 channels to watch, but now teens are watching Tic Toc, YouTube etc grandparents are watching scheduled TV and the in-between generation a mix of on line, streaming and trad TV.

EsmaCannonball · 14/08/2025 18:02

Alex Kingston made me think the bookers had put some effort in this year but it's mostly the same old tired people who trudge round the reality TV circuit on an endless loop.

Hope the final three names are a bit more exciting and unexpected.

SequinsandSoleros · 14/08/2025 18:51

3/12?
I'll give you Vicky and Dani, and possibly Thomas, but I haven't seen the other nine on any reality show or subsequent panel show.

Are they A Listers/teatime names/big hitters? No, but we have this every year:
the money is shite
the publicity invasive
you're either on the way up, the way down
or you love dance/have a few months free/got pushed into it or know someone who has been on it or connected to it in some way.

Don't get me wrong. I'd have loved a member of Ghosts, a chaser, an author, a comedian/enne...but realistically, pretty much all your household names have done it or refused to.

Actually as usual the sports people are (well were A Listers) you wouldn't get team sports players during their careers because their contracts wouldn't allow it so they are always going to passed their peak but every footballer, cricketer, rugby player etc that has done Strictly was a top notch in their day.

They aren't wheeling out guys who knocked about the lower leagues and only fans of the teams they played for have ever heard of them. The individual athletes have been Olympic medalists and the team sports participants have all been internationals. They are big names in the sports world.

SequinsandSoleros · 14/08/2025 19:43

Yes, sorry. You could tell Jimmy was a massive deal just from Alex Scott's reaction.

SequinsandSoleros · 14/08/2025 19:45

Let's hope they have a longer bout than Tom last year. Nadiya had a back injury earlier this week. So I am giving Chris the rugby guy to Luba.
First boot : Thomas or Vicky please. Now watch them give the former to Katya and the latter to Julian.

GetDressedYouMerryGentlemen · 14/08/2025 19:57

I'm always slightly shocked by the calibre of sports people that do Strictly. I know that some of the Olympic sports aren't well paid and even gold medalist household names aren't on big bucks but I find myself wondering why the likes Peter Schmeichel have done it he - couldn't need either the money or the exposure.

SequinsandSoleros · 14/08/2025 20:49

Allegedly to please his wife, get fit again and because he was inspired by Darren Gough and James Martin. 👀

SequinsandSoleros · 14/08/2025 20:51

I'm amazed they haven't yet been able to talk Peter Crouch into it.

Perhaps Abby didn't have a completely positive experience and has put him off.

Yeah the really well paid sports people must be a combination family pressure, competitive nature, egged on by friends, fitness etc.

It was the really high profile sports stars that actually got me into Strictly - in the period of the first few series I still had my football season ticket and I went to matches with Dad and often I would get back to Mum and Dad's when it was on and Mum was watching it. I would stop for a cuppa and a quick catch up and I ended up completely hooked from catching the like of Darren Gough dancing.

EsmaCannonball · 14/08/2025 21:18

The BBC is known for making opportunities conditional upon doing Strictly. Sportspeople who want to make the transition from competitor to pundit or presenter are probably told it will be a mark in their favour. Sometimes the link between a celeb appearing on Strictly and getting a new BBC gig is pretty obvious.

So far we have 7 men and 5 women. I hope at the very least 2 of tomorrow's announcements are female, otherwise it will be a repeat of last year's weirdly bloke-heavy series.

Ha ha yes it is sometimes very obvious that a breakfast TV presenter celeb has been strong armed into doing Strictly when that would rather eat their own foot.

xsquared · 15/08/2025 09:16

Coffeeishot · 15/08/2025 09:50

It is Ross King that does the LK entertainment, I like him.

xsquared · 15/08/2025 10:15

Don't know much about him, but we'll see.

Two more to go. I hope they're both women.
We are missing a former pop star type amd a comedian.
