S2

Karen Pirie season 2 release date confirmed as acclaimed series tackles dark new cold case
The ITV crime drama is finally returning.

Season 2, which has once again been adapted by Emer Kenny from one of Val McDermid's novels, sees Lauren Lyle return as the titular police officer, who has now been promoted to detective inspector.

The synopsis for season 2 says: "The 1984 case of Catriona and Adam Grant has confounded investigators and intrigued the public like no other.

"Catriona, the charming young heiress to a vast oil fortune, and her two-year-old son Adam, were brutally kidnapped at gunpoint outside a fish and chip shop in Fife.

The ransom notes that followed stirred up an uncontrollable press storm, but when the culprits fell silent, the police faltered, and Catriona and Adam were never seen again."

The synopsis continues: "Now, a man’s body has been discovered, with indisputable links to the original kidnap. With the first piece of evidence in decades, Karen must assemble an unbeatable team alongside her sincere and lovable sidekick DC Jason ‘Mint’ Murray (Chris Jenks) and the brilliant – but romantically complicated – DS Phil Parhatka (Zach Wyatt).

With the international renown of the kidnap and the constant pressure from Catriona’s father, Sir Broderick Grant (James Cosmo), the team take on the biggest challenge of their careers to date.

"As Karen delves deeper into what happened in the autumn of 1984, political grudges and painful secrets reveal themselves, and it soon becomes clear… the past is far from dead."

Also starring in season 2 are Kenny herself, other returnees Steve John Shepherd and Rakhee Thakrar, and newcomers Saskia Ashdown, Frances Tomelty, John Michie, Julia Brown, Mark Rowley, Kat Ronney, Conor Berry, Stuart Campbell, James Fleet and more.

Same @mum2jakie

Mind is wandering and I’m losing the plot
left it and went back to it but it’s not keeping my mind

it’s def a 2hr 2 long thing

why they can’t make into 6 x 1 hr

OP posts:
burnoutbabe · 20/07/2025 22:09

It did feel far longer than say Grace does. I am sure I must have read the book but can’t recall any plot.

was pc man of 1984 also the dodgy copper from season 1?

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/07/2025 22:09

Grace is 2hrs. But I also love JS so …….

CoolShoeshine · 20/07/2025 22:26

So is it to be continued or was that it for the story?

Missingthesea · 20/07/2025 23:44

I presume it will continue next Sunday. I enjoyed it!

moto748e · 21/07/2025 00:00

Yeah, I'm on on it now, and it's long, isn't it? And I keep pausing it too. One thing I did find, for sub-title fans, is that although they weren't available through catch-up on TV, there were if played from the ITV site on my lap-top. Plus, no ads that way.

onceuponatimeinneverland · 21/07/2025 01:51

I have binged (no spoilers from me), and in episode 1 I thought too much 1984 and not enough Karen.

Stick with it I'd say.

moto748e · 21/07/2025 01:55

Finished the first ep now. I only remember the first series vaguely, but is it fair to say they've made Karen a bit more likeable this time?

BestIsWest · 21/07/2025 10:07

I enjoyed it and I’m not usually good with 2 hour things.

Cherrypi · 21/07/2025 13:15

Is there normally this many adverts? How long is the actual running time?

butterpuffed · 21/07/2025 13:37

I don't think she's any more likeable than the first series , abrasive and snappy.

It's quite good but thought it'd be a complete story as two hours .

She's in trouble now as the new woman heard her mention 'leaks' , and she'll be telling the boss .

digiwidgy · 21/07/2025 14:31

I have binged it all today. If you can watch it on demand you won’t get as many adverts as last night on the TV. The next 2 episodes are just 1.5 hours long. Three in the entire series.

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2025 18:40

I'm a bit confused because of something the not usually observant DH said, so I checked and he's right. In the first series the 'modern' time frame was 1996. This made sense because the characters had to be about 20 years older. Now we have a 1984 time frame with a 40 year gap ( Brodie and husband's wife making very unconvincing late 80s people!). So...what?... that makes no sense. Karen has been promoted but she isn't 30 years older!! Do they think we all just forgot that??

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2025 19:01

Ah, no, now somewhere else says she was investigating a 1996 enquiry. Hmm.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/07/2025 20:12

I gave up. Sorry

Clawdy · 21/07/2025 22:07

Too long for me. These two hour dramas are getting a bit much.

littlefireseverywhere · 21/07/2025 22:15

I won’t give anything away, but I’ve binge watched them all they’re on ITVX or Disney+ so easier to watch. Disney+ has no adverts, but they really are quite excellent and definitely easy watching.

caramac04 · 21/07/2025 22:21

I love a 2 hour drama. Might binge on Disney+
I enjoyed lasts night’s episode.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/07/2025 22:32

It’s a shame as I enjoyed s1 but 2hr things I do lose concentration
