S2

Karen Pirie season 2 release date confirmed as acclaimed series tackles dark new cold case
The ITV crime drama is finally returning.

Season 2, which has once again been adapted by Emer Kenny from one of Val McDermid's novels, sees Lauren Lyle return as the titular police officer, who has now been promoted to detective inspector.

The synopsis for season 2 says: "The 1984 case of Catriona and Adam Grant has confounded investigators and intrigued the public like no other.

"Catriona, the charming young heiress to a vast oil fortune, and her two-year-old son Adam, were brutally kidnapped at gunpoint outside a fish and chip shop in Fife.

The ransom notes that followed stirred up an uncontrollable press storm, but when the culprits fell silent, the police faltered, and Catriona and Adam were never seen again."

The synopsis continues: "Now, a man’s body has been discovered, with indisputable links to the original kidnap. With the first piece of evidence in decades, Karen must assemble an unbeatable team alongside her sincere and lovable sidekick DC Jason ‘Mint’ Murray (Chris Jenks) and the brilliant – but romantically complicated – DS Phil Parhatka (Zach Wyatt).

With the international renown of the kidnap and the constant pressure from Catriona’s father, Sir Broderick Grant (James Cosmo), the team take on the biggest challenge of their careers to date.

"As Karen delves deeper into what happened in the autumn of 1984, political grudges and painful secrets reveal themselves, and it soon becomes clear… the past is far from dead."

Also starring in season 2 are Kenny herself, other returnees Steve John Shepherd and Rakhee Thakrar, and newcomers Saskia Ashdown, Frances Tomelty, John Michie, Julia Brown, Mark Rowley, Kat Ronney, Conor Berry, Stuart Campbell, James Fleet and more.

I keep wondering where you could go for a dance in the 80s wearing jeans. I only remember places with dress codes, and anyone in jeans would have been refused entry. Am I wrong about that?

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/08/2025 21:31

There was a club called the base near me and I went late 80’s - early 90’s and wore jeans

So do I take it mick P took Adam and raised him as his son ?

Yes you cant help thinking 2 blokes at the airport with a baby might have raised an eyebrow at passport control in view of the recent abduction.

Ah yes it was 40 yrs ago. I remember in those days you could get those paper passports at the post office that no-one bothered looking at Grin.

Clawdy · 03/08/2025 22:12

A bit too much chasing, shooting and confusing men's names, but quite enjoyed it.

mum2jakie · 03/08/2025 22:31

In the 80s you could just add children to adult passports without needing photos of the kids. You could also buy one year passports too. I remember having one for my first adult passport! Much quicker and cheaper than a ten year one.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/08/2025 22:41

So let me see if I have this right before I find a recap

so Cattina faked the kidnapping due to her father doing dodgy deals shutting down the mines ? And people losing money and this was payback as her bf Mick lost his job /‘money

dad snuck out. Mum heard and followed and accidentally shot C in the caves

she killed her but hubby to protect her said he saw her drive off with Adam and money

so she thought she was alive

dad knew she was dead but still loves his ex that he hid it from her

mick and friend went to Malta and raised Adam as their own

and all was good till her body was found

No the mining was just a side point. Nothing to do with the grants.

neither parent knew Catarina as in the caves they all assumed gone off in the car. And I’d say the Rock fall killed her, not the gun shot. So a tragic accident (which one may say she brought on herself and she did kill the other bloke)

Tho mum said she was in the caves and she shot her but didn’t mean to

and dad said he saw her go

tho he didn’t. He only repeated what the other man told him about driving off

OP posts:
burnoutbabe · 03/08/2025 23:23

both parents and unnamed guard man assumed they all went off in the car. As she was involved. Mum would have assumed she missed when shooting as daughter didn’t fall over at that point.

if they thought daughter was in the cave they would have got it excavated to find the bodies privately.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/08/2025 23:37

That’s a good point

I vaguely remember reading the book and enjoyed it, Val McDermid writes a good story.
Somehow, the tv adaptation seemed lacking in depth despite being somewhat convoluted.
I think I saw V McD was an executive producer but not sure how much input she would have had.
I enjoyed series 1 more. Not sure if I’ll bother if there’s a third series. I really do need to look at the book again.

caramac04 · 04/08/2025 10:28

From the book, Karen sees herself through someone else’s eyes
‘a wee fat woman crammed into a Marks and Spencer suit, mid brown hair in a bob needing a visit to the hairdresser- cheekbones might be ok if they were visible under the fat’
Thats not exact as I’m writing from memory.
I know it’s not the story but I did feel what I was seeing on the tv was not the character I remembered.

timoteigirl · 04/08/2025 11:03

I haven't read the book. Have watched series 1. But I don't understand why the main character Karen acts like a kid, the sort of primary kids who is eager to raise hand for each question to show how smart they are. Is this part of the original or changed for television? I think I would hate having her as my boss...

caramac04 · 04/08/2025 11:30

@timoteigirl the character in the book seemed to have more substance iykwim. She was youngish for the post having had 3 promotions in 2 years but not a fast tracked detective.
I preferred the character in the book.

She's definitely cooler and more no nonsense in series 1. Series 2 she just seems silly imo. I like her colleagues though.

diddl · 04/08/2025 11:45

so Cattina faked the kidnapping due to her father doing dodgy deals shutting down the mines ?

There had been an accident on an oil rig due to faulty equipment.

The blame was put on someone for being drunk & his family were paid off to accept this.

I think there were also other pay offs for silence-arranged by Fergus.

moto748e · 04/08/2025 11:47

I loved that Karen his her team of Very Good Detectives found local help only too pleased to go above and beyond for them, without any official basis, all speaking perfect English too!
