S2

Karen Pirie season 2 release date confirmed as acclaimed series tackles dark new cold case
The ITV crime drama is finally returning.

Season 2, which has once again been adapted by Emer Kenny from one of Val McDermid's novels, sees Lauren Lyle return as the titular police officer, who has now been promoted to detective inspector.

The synopsis for season 2 says: "The 1984 case of Catriona and Adam Grant has confounded investigators and intrigued the public like no other.

"Catriona, the charming young heiress to a vast oil fortune, and her two-year-old son Adam, were brutally kidnapped at gunpoint outside a fish and chip shop in Fife.

The ransom notes that followed stirred up an uncontrollable press storm, but when the culprits fell silent, the police faltered, and Catriona and Adam were never seen again."

The synopsis continues: "Now, a man’s body has been discovered, with indisputable links to the original kidnap. With the first piece of evidence in decades, Karen must assemble an unbeatable team alongside her sincere and lovable sidekick DC Jason ‘Mint’ Murray (Chris Jenks) and the brilliant – but romantically complicated – DS Phil Parhatka (Zach Wyatt).

With the international renown of the kidnap and the constant pressure from Catriona’s father, Sir Broderick Grant (James Cosmo), the team take on the biggest challenge of their careers to date.

"As Karen delves deeper into what happened in the autumn of 1984, political grudges and painful secrets reveal themselves, and it soon becomes clear… the past is far from dead."

Also starring in season 2 are Kenny herself, other returnees Steve John Shepherd and Rakhee Thakrar, and newcomers Saskia Ashdown, Frances Tomelty, John Michie, Julia Brown, Mark Rowley, Kat Ronney, Conor Berry, Stuart Campbell, James Fleet and more.

I'm a bit confused because of something the not usually observant DH said, so I checked and he's right. In the first series the 'modern' time frame was 1996. This made sense because the characters had to be about 20 years older. Now we have a 1984 time frame with a 40 year gap ( Brodie and husband's wife making very unconvincing late 80s people!). So...what?... that makes no sense. Karen has been promoted but she isn't 30 years older!! Do they think we all just forgot that??

I was thinking the same about the parents who must be 85-90? As 45-50 at the start. They didn’t look it. The 2 younger women (friend of missing girl and housekeeper) looked more realistic at 65ish now.

I recorded it so not as long as adverts fill it out plus I like longer episodes. I didn’t see the first series. She seems unnecessarily stroppy over nothing much at times and is putting living people’s lives at risk unnecessarily

Cherrypi · 22/07/2025 13:07

Disney only has series one unfortunately

MayIDestroyYou · 22/07/2025 14:21

Oh my lord, it’s dull. I’m in the middle of a police interview in ep 3; picked up my phone and MN is way more exciting …

SydneyCarton · 22/07/2025 14:48

@burnoutbabe I think he might be - I have read all the books and I'm sure there was one where she went back to speak to him in prison about a historic case that he had worked on. It might be this one, but I can't remember much of the story.

MayIDestroyYou · 22/07/2025 19:20

(Hope ‘police interview’ isn’t viewed as a spoiler? They’re kind of inevitable in a police procedure show.)

NewAgeNewMe · 24/07/2025 19:06

Great first episode. I didn’t find it slow at all.

2Rebecca · 24/07/2025 22:47

The boyfriend is wet and boring

MrsLargeEmbodied · 25/07/2025 07:23

not sure if i really enjoyed series 1
just watched an hour of the first episode and it didnt grab me, very light

Dustythewondercat · 27/07/2025 08:25

enjoyed it. we record it, so ff adverts.

Internaut · 27/07/2025 10:03

The Grace series covers a whole book in one episode, which I think is too quick. This seems to go to the other extreme. I like it, but I think there could be a happy medium for both.

I enjoyed that!

I don't really like KP though & there doesn't seem to be much of a partnership going on like oh Morse & Lewis for example.

NewAgeNewMe · 27/07/2025 21:21

I’ll watch during the week.

OliviaBonas · 27/07/2025 22:41

I'm not sure why they've chosen to set the present day part in 2024, as having read the subsequent books there are a couple of present day plotlines in which Covid lockdown plays a fairly big part in how the plot advances and I don't know how they're going to reconcile that since it's already in the past in the series.

moto748e · 28/07/2025 13:16

I'm a bit confused here. Surely that was ep #2 on last night, and we haven't had eps #3 and 4 yet?

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/07/2025 13:19
