S2

Karen Pirie season 2 release date confirmed as acclaimed series tackles dark new cold case
The ITV crime drama is finally returning.

Season 2, which has once again been adapted by Emer Kenny from one of Val McDermid's novels, sees Lauren Lyle return as the titular police officer, who has now been promoted to detective inspector.

The synopsis for season 2 says: "The 1984 case of Catriona and Adam Grant has confounded investigators and intrigued the public like no other.

"Catriona, the charming young heiress to a vast oil fortune, and her two-year-old son Adam, were brutally kidnapped at gunpoint outside a fish and chip shop in Fife.

The ransom notes that followed stirred up an uncontrollable press storm, but when the culprits fell silent, the police faltered, and Catriona and Adam were never seen again."

The synopsis continues: "Now, a man’s body has been discovered, with indisputable links to the original kidnap. With the first piece of evidence in decades, Karen must assemble an unbeatable team alongside her sincere and lovable sidekick DC Jason ‘Mint’ Murray (Chris Jenks) and the brilliant – but romantically complicated – DS Phil Parhatka (Zach Wyatt).

With the international renown of the kidnap and the constant pressure from Catriona’s father, Sir Broderick Grant (James Cosmo), the team take on the biggest challenge of their careers to date.

"As Karen delves deeper into what happened in the autumn of 1984, political grudges and painful secrets reveal themselves, and it soon becomes clear… the past is far from dead."

Also starring in season 2 are Kenny herself, other returnees Steve John Shepherd and Rakhee Thakrar, and newcomers Saskia Ashdown, Frances Tomelty, John Michie, Julia Brown, Mark Rowley, Kat Ronney, Conor Berry, Stuart Campbell, James Fleet and more.

I gave up after the first episode, though I live in Fife so it was fun location spotting. But the plot! So dull and surely a bit obvious what really happened?

moto748e · 28/07/2025 13:16

I'm a bit confused here. Surely that was ep #2 on last night, and we haven't had eps #3 and 4 yet?

It's all on ITVX.

Only shows as 1hr30 per episode.

I only get a couple of ads at the beginning.

moto748e · 28/07/2025 15:14

Yes, I know it's on ITVX. But this is a "TV pace, no spoilers" thread, as it says at the top.

butterpuffed · 28/07/2025 15:18

They keep bringing in new names to the plot and some have changed their identities as well,, so it's not easy to keep track !

Am quite enjoying it , watched ep 2 earlier, final one next week .

diddl · 28/07/2025 15:29

I was pointing out that it's 1 & half hours on there for those saying that 2hrs is too much & that that is how someone might have seen 3&4

I've only seen the first ep!

However I think Blondes might mean the first part hr ep 2 as "3" & the second hr as "4".

ETA

That was to @ moto748e.

Thought I had quoted post!

Yes-that's why I realised it couldn't be that.

Maybe Sinclair has some info on him?

He must do. Why else would you keep your daughters ex bf esp if they left her when pregnant and he was married

The actress playing the mother is Frances Tomelty. Been in lots of things. Once married to Sting.

Gloriia · 29/07/2025 09:28

I like a police drama so I'm watching this as series 1 was ok.

I do find Pirie annoying, she looks like a school girl with all her silly eye rolling and face pulling. I wish her character was a bit more steely. Still, other characters quite interesting.

Cosmo's sustainable house was a montrosity and would she really have revealed all her theories about Kat's complicity in her disappearance even with her reveal of who she thinks killed Kevin without proof?!

NewAgeNewMe · 29/07/2025 13:40

But unrealistic but entertaining.

moto748e · 29/07/2025 14:30

The set-up in ep 2 with Pirie commanding the stage to explain her brilliant guesses as to what happened, interspersed with flashback footage showing her to be amazingly correct, was very poorly done.

Violetparis · 02/08/2025 09:09

I enjoyed this, makes a change to see a young female detective.

Violetparis · 02/08/2025 09:09

I enjoyed this, makes a change to see a young female detective.

It does yes she just seemed to have changed character a bit, in series 1 she was quite no nonsense didn't suffer fools then in series 2 disintegrates into a kind of Death in Paradise clunky style drama with lots of dashing about and implausibility.

Anyway Trigger point soon!

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/08/2025 20:47

@Gloriia autumn time for trigger point s3

and they are making s4 now so that will be shown next year

caramac04 · 03/08/2025 07:35

I need to have a Quick Look at the books because although I’m enjoying watching the tv version, the Karen Pirie I remember was quite different. Then again I could be confusing her with another character.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/08/2025 13:22

E3 tonight. I will watch it and hopefully not get mind wandering as go away the countering to clear planner 😂
